The 3-year-old resource center in Tempe serving Ahwatukee families is in need of food donations for April.

The Kyrene Family Resource Center, a joint effort by the Kyrene School District and the Kyrene Foundation, estimates that about 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of food like canned goods, peanut butter, rice and dry beans, hearty soups, and cereals are needed.

“We’re worried about the immediate,” said district prevention manager, Amanda Hamm. “Our call out to the community is, ‘Bring what you have right now.’”

The resource center donates food, clothing, school supplies and hygiene products to families in all 25 district schools. Noting that the holiday season is a great time for incoming donations at the center, the spring season usually lags behind for nonprofits across the board. But with the combination of January and February drives turning out on the small side, and a March drive postponed, Hamm said it all culminated in low supplies at the center.

“It created a gap this year, we know we’ll be short for about four weeks,” she said.

With the month of May covered by a few donation drive events, Hamm said the center just needs food to sustain it through this month.

“In the spring, (donating) is just not on our minds,” she said.

To make a donation online, visit the resource center’s website and click on the “Donate” button on the top right of the page.

Physical donations to the Kyrene Family Resource Center are accepted on site, 1330 E. Dava Drive in Tempe, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
