The first of two blood drives at Desert Vista this year will take place Tuesday.

All community members, staff and students over the age of 16 are invited to come out and donate from 7 to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 20 in the school's small gymnasium, 16440 S. 32nd St.

The blood drives are hosted by the Desert Vista Key Club and benefit United Blood Services, who will be on scene to draw the blood.

Desert Vista Key Club president Carolyn Rath said the goal is to collect 170 units or donations.

Last year, they took in 102 units in their September blood drive and 162 in their April drive.

"The hardest part is getting word out to the community," said Dana Zack, spokeswoman for the club. "But it's needed, it's necessary, and we hope the community can make it out here."

Kids under 18 must have a parent's permission to donate. For all those interested, the Key Club asks that you reserve a time online, at the website, www.bloodhero.com.

Click "Donate Blood" and enter "thunder" as the drive's sponsor code. Then click on the Sept. 20 drive to schedule an appointment.

They recommend all donors eat a good breakfast the morning of the drive, drink plenty of water, and be sure to bring a picture ID. For more information, email the club at desertvistakeyclub@gmail.com or call club sponsor Anita Welch at (480) 706-7900, ext. 2166.
