The team representing Phoenix and Ahwatukee Foothills recently won the national title at the USTA League 4.5 Adult National Championships in Tucson.

The team first formed in 2005 and has been playing out of the Ahwatukee Racquet Club since 2009, said the team’s captain, Michael Flinn of Ahwatukee.

No strangers to success, the team has also won four out of five Southwest Sectional games. But according to Flinn, none has been “as prestigious as the national title.”

The team had preceded to Nationals three times before, one in 2006, 2008 and 2010 before returning this year.

Next up for the team of 11, Flinn said the group will disperse for a season and regroup after winter.

“We will reevaluate things and possibly look to recruit for an unprecedented fifth trip to Nationals in 2014,” he added.

For now, the team and its coach will enjoy their recent win.

“I had the good fortune of being on the 1980 NCAA Championship baseball team at the University of Arizona, and the feeling of capturing this USTA 4.5 title was very similar,” Flinn said.
