Ahwatukee native Dr. Robert Niebuhr is gearing up for the fall semester by opening a test preparation center in Tempe, designed to help foreign students and high school students be prepared for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and SAT test.
Niebuhr has an extensive amount of experience when it comes to teaching, while being a professor of different universities ranging from Boston College to Simmons College.
He’s also been abroad having his hands in research in Serbia, and has taught at two different universities in Bolivia.
His area of background consists of history and political science, which he taught in Boston.
Niebuhr said the courses were a mixture of upper division and lower division classes, but in Bolivia it was more scaled towards political science, conflict resolution and English.
“From the English I also got in touch with a good friend down there on doing test preps, so for the past two years I’ve been taking a look at standardized tests like the TOEFL and the SAT test,” Niebuhr said.
His center, located at Baseline and Rural roads, focuses on two tests to aid international students on passing the test, along with helping high school students to be well prepared for the SAT test.
Recently returning from Bolivia, Niebuhr began setting up shop to open the test preparation center and had his open house this past April.
Niebuhr said because it seemed to him through his experience in Bolivia and speaking with different people, he realized it was more of a word-of-mouth type business.
He said he made some good moves with the TOEFL test in the community, but is still trying to get the SAT program off the ground.
“Now is my time to really start with the SAT, so in August I’m going to start really promoting that on a bigger scale,” he said.
Niebuhr decided to open the center because he said it seemed there was a need for it and there aren’t too many programs like it in the area.
Other than opening up his new test preparation center, in the fall Niebuhr will become a faculty member at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State.
