Throughout the week Sonoran Science Academy Ahwatukee will be celebrating National School Choice Week, providing the community information about the choices of enrolling their child into a charter school.
According to the National School Choice Week website, the week celebration provides an unprecedented opportunity each January to shine a spotlight on the need for effective education options for children.
Assistant Principal Kenny Walker said this year Sonoran Science Academy Ahwatukee will be hosting a community breakfast at the school in efforts to reflect on the school year, and for community members to gain knowledge about the school.
“National School Choice Week started about five years back, and more of the charter and private education facilities celebrate it. It’s a big deal because if your neighborhood school is not getting the job done, it’s a great thing that you can take your child anywhere,” Walker said.
National Choice Week also allows students to reflect on why they’re attending the charter school.
“It’s a great time of celebration,” he said. “We provide a lot of programs, skills for kids who are going to need them for tomorrow. We are a STEM school, which focuses on Science Technology, Engineering and Math, so the kids really realize what we are providing for them.”
The community breakfast will be at Sonoran Science Academy Ahwatukee, 14647 S. 50th St., Suite 125, from 8 to 9 a.m., which will be followed by a school pep rally.
During the community breakfast the school will be having Phoenix Councilman Sal DiCiccio as its keynote speaker.
