A new wine bar and bistro at the Club West golf course in Ahwatukee Foothills is hoping to offer Club West residents a new neighborhood hangout targeted specifically to them.

Ahwatukee Golf Properties has owned Club West for a few years, but until this past summer the restaurant portion of the golf course was being leased to someone else.

When that lease came up in June the owners had a decision to make. They could open the restaurant for just breakfast and lunch and close it at sundown when the golf course closes or they could try something different. They decided to give the entire restaurant a makeover and go for something new.

“We had this idea to do something in the neighborhood that people would really want to come in and enjoy,” said Kelli Walsh, director of sales/food and beverage for Ahwatukee Golf Properties. “The whole idea is that this is the hangout for this neighborhood and the Club West community. We do a fantastic breakfast and lunch every day, but at 4 p.m. we really want to turn it into the neighborhood hangout where you come for live music and appetizers, and even a dinner entrée.”

Walsh said in the past the food has always been good at Club West but they wanted to take it up a notch and really start providing more. After 4 p.m. their full menu features tapas items or small bites, which are everything from brochettes, hummus and street tacos to lettuce wraps and the chef’s specialty, green chile pork.

They also offer a variety of salads, a few entrées and some desserts. They plan to have wine available all day.

The restaurant, which is named Agave Wine Bar and Bistro, will continue to offer live music on Thursday and Friday nights from 5 to 8 p.m. as they’ve done in the past.

Walsh said if they get enough requests and interest from the community they may turn it to more of an open mike night in the future.

This is the first time Ahwatukee Golf Properties has created a restaurant like this in Ahwatukee Foothills. The Duke in Maricopa is one of the company’s other properties and Walsh said that course does draw large crowds for dinner but in Ahwatukee properties like the Country Club and The Foothills aren’t really in an area where that might be of interest.

“This just seemed like it was in the perfect place to try something new, see if we can get the community involved and stay open for a few extra hours and see if we can offer something a little bit different,” Walsh said. “I think the reason people don’t come to The Foothills or the Country Club for dinner is because our menu is very much breakfast and lunch. There isn’t a whole lot of dinner items and they really don’t have the environment to sit back and enjoy a nice dinner and glass of wine there. Here with the lake and the views it’s really beautiful.”

Reservations for the Agave Wine Bar and Bistro are requested but walk-ins are more than welcome. To make a reservation or for more information, call (480) 460-4400.
