Desert Vista High School was honored by the Arizona Cardinals and the National Football League as the only high school in Arizona selected to wear custom pink jerseys for its home game tonight.

The jerseys will pay homage to breast cancer awareness, a long-standing initiative by the NFL.

Cardinals players and cheerleaders visited the Desert Vista campus on Tuesday and participated in a school assembly as they presented the jerseys.

Desert Vista will take the field against Westwood, and at halftime will present a check to breast cancer charities. The fundraising goal is $24,000 and Desert Vista staff and students are collecting that through donations, a silent auction and Tic Tac Pro cards, which is in essence like a lottery scratcher that gives discounts to local businesses.

"This event is symbolic to the amazing people we have in our DVHS Community," Dr. Anna Battle, the principal at Desert Vista, said in an email.

"With support from the Arizona Cardinals, the Tic Tac Pro organization, the Desert Vista Football Boosters and DVHS administration, this wonderful event will honor a few of our brave women in the community. To participate in an event that will assist with funding for a cause, which will assist with cures/assistance for breast cancer, is an honor."

Desert Vista was chosen because of its long-standing relationship with the Cardinals and because the school has shown that it is dedicated to the cause, a Cardinals representative said.

"We know they take the breast cancer seriously," spokesman Sheldon Meeks said. "We have a good working relationship and we chose them based on their work in the past and the success they have had fundraising on their own."

In addition to Friday night's game, the Desert Vista varsity squad has been invited to University of Phoenix Stadium and will be passing out breast cancer ribbons at the gates before the Cardinals take on the New York Giants on Oct. 2.
