Mountain Pointe High School will be hosting the fifth and newest campus of Central Christian Church in January.

The non-denominational Christian church has four other locations in the East Valley including Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa and Queen Creek, with its newest taking root through a partnership here in Ahwatukee.

Lead campus pastor Corey Bullock said the move was inspired by the church’s Queen Creek location, also housed in a high school.

“We also took a look at our demographic, and our philosophy is to take the church where the people are,” added Jason Ake, communications director at Central. “Ahwatukee was the next central point for people driving a good distance to our other locations.”

Central will open with its first service Jan. 13 out of Mountain Pointe’s auditorium. Kids ministry classes will be done in choir rooms, the cafeteria and a youth group meeting upstairs, all contained in the school’s north wing.

“We’re not just a renter, we want to partner with them,” Ake said of future opportunities to work with the school.

About five months ago, the church felt drawn to the Ahwatukee Foothills area, with many of its attendees coming from the area, and began talking with the Tempe Union High School District.

Originally, according to Bullock, school districts were closed off to having churches in schools. But soon enough, Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Baca told the church that the district would be open to it, after seeing the success with the Queen Creek location out of Queen Creek High School.

After months of planning, Bullock and his team of leaders are ready to launch next month, already expecting about 100 people to fill the pews.

“We’re excited about getting to come in and partner with other faith-based, Christ-believing churches in the area,” Bullock said. “ It’s just about being a good representation of who Jesus is and what he’s done.”
