The Desert Vista Spiritline is ready to yell and shout, and teach some of its routines to Ahwatukee Foothills girls.
The group will once again host its semi-annual cheer/pom fundraising clinics for girls in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Last year, according to former DV spiritline coach Kris Rademacher, the Arizona Interscholastic Association reinforced its rule on not allowing any sport or activity to hold camps or clinics during their season, in order to prevent recruitment.
However, in March of this year the AIA passed a revision to the rule that allows camps and clinics to meet at anytime during the calendar year, with the anti-recruitment rule still in place.
Rademacher said the rule states that there should be no influence placed on any participants, and that if it is found that the student has switched schools in order to join the team of the clinic they participated in, the student will be in-eligible to play.
Rademacher added that she believes this rule doesn't really apply to the DV clinics, as the clinics target audience is young girls, and that they usually have more little girls that older ones.
So far, DV has two cheer clinics planned for this school year, one on Sept. 25 and the other on Jan. 29, 2011. Participants from each clinic will perform during a varsity football or basketball game, depending on which clinic they attend.
The Sept. 25 clinic will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the DV gymnasium, 16440 S. 32nd St. Participants can register the day of the event, starting at 12:30 p.m., and will be invited to perform during the DV varsity football game on Friday Oct. 22. The clinic costs $35, and participants will be given a T-shirt to wear during the performance, as well as pom poms, photos and snacks and drinks the day of the clinic.
For people who would like to register early, or have questions about the clinic, contact Susan Laughlin, co-president of the DV Cheer Boosters, at email@example.com.
Mountain Pointe High School will also be hosting a cheer clinic Oct. 9 at 9:30 a.m. in the big gymnasium at Mountain Pointe, 4201 E. Knox Road; with check-in beginning at 9 a.m. Participants will work with the MP varsity and junior varsity spiritline to learn various cheers, chants and jumps. At 11:30 a.m. participants will perform their newly learned routines for spectators. Following the performance, there will be a pizza lunch. Participants will receive a cheer clinic 2010 T-shirt, pom poms and refreshments.
Cost of the MP cheer clinic is $30 if paid in advance during pre-registration or $35 the day of the clinic. For more information or to pre-register, e-mail Sonia Flores at firstname.lastname@example.org.
