Ahwatukee Foothills resident Loraine Pellegrino has been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Last month, delegates from the Arizona Republican Party State Convention named her as one of 29 delegates to represent at the August National Republican Convention in Tampa, Fla.

The election is an enormous honor for Pellegrino, who was first elected as a delegate to Arizona’s state convention where she, along with 400 others, vied for the 29 available seats. Pellegrino was chosen alongside Gov. Jan Brewer — who will be leading the Arizona delegation — Sen. John McCain, and other prominent Arizona politicians to represent the state during the three-day convention.

The National Republican Convention is responsible for officially nominating the party candidate for presidency for the election this November. It is also a time for party members from all over the country to convene with like-minded individuals, decide the official party platform for the next four years, and to celebrate.

“It’s really a historical event,” said Pellegrino, who is eager to be apart of what she calls history-in-the-making. “It’s an honor and a privilege to represent the state that way, and I’ll do my best.”

The election is especially exciting for Pellegrino, who says she has been actively voting her entire life and has never missed an election since she turned 18. She is heavily involved in both state and local politics, serving as president and founder of Ahwatukee Republican Women, a local club affiliated with both the Arizona Federation of Republican Women (of which she is first vice president) and National Federation of Republican Women.

“One thing led to another,” Pellegrino said. “The more you do, the more you want to do, especially when you see you can make a difference in the community. It’s a great way to be involved.”

Tampa will be host to more than 2,000 delegates representing all 50 states and a few territories at the convention in August. Other attendees include media and volunteers, but to actually be part of the process that kicks off the official race for the White House is a one-of-a-kind privilege for Pellegrino.

“It’ll be exciting, to be nominating who could potentially be the next president of the United States,” she said.

For local residents who would like to follow and support Pellegrino, the event will be globally broadcast in a GOP effort to host a “convention without walls.”
