Alisha Rachkoskie wants to get the word out about a class at Mountain View Lutheran Church because it may help others like it has helped her.

The class, called Alpha, brings people together of all different faiths who want to learn more about the beliefs that make up the foundation of Christianity. Classes are on Wednesday evenings in the form of an open-setting, where questions or concerns about any topic can be brought up to the group.

Rachkoskie, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident, struggled with addiction in the past and was also looking for a calling.

"I wanted to be invested in my community and I sought out opportunities to do so," she said. "There were opportunities but none of them worked out. When I finally found Alpha, I felt that God answered me completely by allowing me to be there and thrive in that situation."

Rachkoskie had also bounced back and was president of a MOMS Club, which is a support group for local moms. She will be donating her time as a volunteer for the next round of Alpha classes that begin on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

"You can do anything in life, you can change your life at any moment," she said. "The objective of Alpha is to listen and let people draw their own conclusion. People come in during any stage of their life, wondering what (Christianity) is all about."

The class is free and open to the public. It lasts for seven weeks, up until April 11, but attendance is not required at all meetings. An organizer for the event said that it's for all those interested in the faith and not just those who know it already, although they would get something out of it too.

"It's designed to be just interesting and fun, and for people to ask questions without judgment," Mountain View Lutheran Church representative Kim DeVoss said. "We would like you to believe when you leave, but if you don't, it's OK."
