Voters in any election have many questions before marking the ballot for a candidate, ranging from questions of intentions to effectiveness to any number of things.

The most salient question, however, to ask before voting is this: “Which candidate has the character, values and integrity to best represent me, and which can I trust to work in the interest of my family and our community?”

The campaign to represent you on the Phoenix City Council has been a long and heated affair. After months of mailers, public appearances and grating automated telephone calls, the character of both candidates vying for the honor of receiving your vote has been laid completely bare.

I have run my campaign on my long record of efficient, effective public service; a career spent working and advocating for seniors, women and families that spans two decades and multiple states.

Since moving to Phoenix almost a decade ago I have founded two successful nonprofit organizations – one that trains women to assume community leadership roles and another to help retirees stay involved in local issues. I believe my considerable experience getting tangible results for everyday citizens on the limited budgets of nonprofit organizations is experience that will serve my fellow Phoenicians well.

My opponent, by contrast, has spent this campaign lying to you at every conceivable opportunity. He invented fables that smeared our local law enforcement after they publicly supported my candidacy; he’s told outrageous lies about me, my background and my non-existent support for an ill-planned Loop 202 extension; and he’s lied by omission by not publicly disclosing the personal profit he stands to make in land deals if that freeway barrels over our neighbors and runs through our treasured South Mountain.

When a candidate will tell blatant and self-serving lies during a campaign, when all eyes are on him, you have a clear indication of how he’ll act when behind the closed doors of City Hall.

My record of service to others speaks to my character and my values, my unwillingness to stoop to the level of blatant lies speaks to my integrity, and all of that speaks to how I will fight for you on the Phoenix City Council.

We, as a city, can resolve the issues we face today: we can balance Phoenix’s budget, provide critical services for our communities’ families, and foster a climate conducive to the locally-owned businesses that make our neighborhoods unique.

But we can only do this with leadership comprised of public servants dedicated to the voters who gave them their trust; servants whose highest aspirations are to improve the city they love, not to enrich themselves and line the pockets of their developer donors, who for too long have owned this city part-and-parcel.

Dana Marie Kennedy is seeking election to public office for the first time.
