Life Coaching Jason Kolber

Recently, I had a meaningful and slightly curious experience.

I am very fortunate in that I have had mentors that have taught me how to live my life as though I am being led my clues, hints, whispers, and inner and outer signs. Within these “signs,” I often find messages of inspiration, insight and protection.

I was out of town recently and I was staying at a hotel where it is very convenient for me to serve some clients. At the hotel, there is a manager who always serves with energy and style. It is almost as though he has made it his mission to take pride in every need of every traveler.

The most interesting thing to me is that the hotel is honestly not a five-star establishment. It turns out the manager’s relatives own the hotel and they have asked him to supervise the establishment. They made a very good choice in that the manager is impeccable with his word and his efforts.

As many of you know, I am not shy, so one day when I went down to the hotel snack area to get an apple and some peanut butter for a quick snack, I asked the manager if he had time to talk.

I asked him a question which some may find excessively inquisitive or pre-sumptuous, but I went for it anyway. I asked the manager what he was passionate about and on a deeper scale, I asked him that if he were not working at the specific hotel where he is managing, what would be his next step?

I didn’t say that the hotel didn’t seem elegant enough for him, or that he has made a limiting choice. That is something that may have come burbling out of my mouth 15 years ago filled with judgement, ego and assumption. Instead, I navigated with warmth and curiosity. Who knows? Perhaps the manager had amazing plans to renovate and restore the facility and create a source of family pride and success.

However, I had a hunch that the manager had a burning desire for another path, and I was right.

When I asked him what he was passionate about his eyes lit up like I just gave him the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket! He went on to share that he just lives for music, specifically, mixing and producing and enhancing the sound quality of performers and he longs within his heart to be able to be involved in that industry.

However, he then slumped his shoulders and went on about being recently married and how he has to be responsible. We had an invigorating discussion about some of the assumptions that he was maintaining as true and then I told him I would keep my ears open in regards to meeting anyone who has connections in the music industry.

Then, when I went back to my room, ready to have a snack, my heart literally jumped out of my chest and I swear it felt like it was beating on the floor. I left the window wide open in my room and there is a lovely tree outside of my hotel room. I was so startled as a pigeon or a morning dove flew into my room and was desperately trying to get out but was frantically beating its wings against the closed portion of the sliding glass door/window.

The sound really shook me up and then I realized that the bird needed help. Now typically when things like this happen, I often wonder what was the message. Some might say, “Well, the bird just flew in and had gotten lost. End of story.”

I like to think more poetically in that perhaps the bird symbolized the manager I was speaking with, and he is like a bird frantically trapped inside a room and he can see out of the room, but perhaps he simply needed a bit of a nudge and support to find freedom.

When I ended the discussion with the manager he shared that I had lifted his spirits. It was my pleasure to be able to assist even in a small way and I have a hunch that somehow he will find his way out into the fresh air where there is some opportunity waiting for him. I envision him taking flight.

You just never know, perhaps today a small encouraging word you offer may help someone take flight.
