Whether it is finding the right transportation or the right house, East Valley Marines were there to help Arizona Veterans move around last month. In keeping with one of their primary missions, that of Marines Helping Marines, the East Valley Marines, Detachment 1296, of the Marine Corps League provided both material and physical assistance to veterans of two wars — a recent Iraq Wounded Warrior and a World War II veteran.

Ken Champlin is a double amputee as a result of serving as a Marine in the Iraq conflict. The detachment provided him with an electric wheelchair last fall. A house was being modified to fit his abilities, and moving day was Feb. 27. The unit arranged for the donation of a bedroom suite, plus individuals donations from members, including two flat-screen televisions and a display unit. They were there on moving day to move all of Champlin’s furniture and household goods to he and his wife’s new home.

Next stop for members of the detachment was to help Allan Satava, a 92-year-old World War II veteran to a new home. He was also provided an electric wheelchair and help moving from an apartment to a house. Satava was part of the 2nd Marine Division in World War II doing the island hopping including Tarawa, Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He was on the beach when MacArthur made his return landing in the Philippines. The division started with some 1,100 men and ended with 89. He also spent time in Korea. Satava joined the Marines in 1941 and was mustered out in 1967.

In order to be able to continue to provide assistance like this and to help other Arizona Wounded Warriors, the East Valley Marines is sponsoring a golf tournament on Friday, April 25 at the Bear Creek Golf Course. Visit their website at www.eastvalleymarines.org to register for the event or to become a sponsor. One-hundred percent of all proceeds from the golf tournament will go to Wounded Warriors here in Arizona.

All Marines and friends of Marines are welcome to meetings at the Sun Lakes Chapel on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

• Denise Lott is an associate member of the East Valley Marines, Detachment 1296.
