What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to sup-

port efficient, graceful movement. The Pilates method of exercise was designed to strengthen, stretch and balance the body. Pilates can improve the way your body functions, looks and feels by increasing core strength and balancing the muscles. Pilates differs from yoga in that yoga focuses on stretching the muscles and is more meditative while Pilates focuses more on strengthening the muscles, especially those of the core and is a more dynamic workout.

Some of the benefits of Pilates are:

Improves Posture

Helps Prevent Injury

Balances Strength and Flexibility

Can be customized to everyone from rehab patients to elite athletes and dancers

Compliments other methods of exercise

Enhances functional fitness and movement

Develops longer, leaner muscles

Non-impact and easy on joints

Who would benefit from Pilates?

Pilates classes are appropriate for all ages and fitness levels and can be customized for special needs including those who are rehabilitating from injury, surgery or accidents, those who wish to achieve a higher fitness level as well as dancers and professional athletes.

What does it specifically treat or what kind of exercises do you do?

Therapeutically, Pilates is an excellent form of exercise for clients with back pain, post-partum women and clients who want to increase strength and improve mobility. Classes are taught on the mat, the reformer (traditional piece of equipment designed by Joseph Pilates based on a spring resistance and a moving surface), the High Ladder Barrel and the High-Low Chair. Each session is taught to the specific needs and objectives of the client.

Is there a specific instructor who teaches the class (if so give details about his/her expertise and experience)? OR Do you offer other classes similar to Pilates at Rehab Plus?

Our Certified Pilates Instructor Revonne Matulis is a comprehensive Level 3 Peak Pilates Instructor. She has been teaching Pilates for over 10 years in both the fitness club setting and the clinic setting. She has been part of the Rehab Plus team for 4.5 years. She teaches her classes with a disciplined yet fun and playful approach that inspires and challenges her students. If a client is currently receiving physical therapy, she works closely with the Doctor of Physical Therapy to design a class that will compliment the therapy that he/she is receiving.

How long is a private Pilates class and how much does it cost?

A private Pilates session lasts one hour and costs $70.00/hour. Package prices are available. In some cases sessions can be reimbursed by personal health insurance if there is a proven therapeutic benefit (i.e. treatment of back pain). The individual would have to first be evaluated by one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy to determine if this would be a medically beneficial physical therapy intervention.
