Q: Where are you from and what did you do before opening your business?

My accent advertises my formative years in Arkansas. More recently, I spent about 14 years in the DC area and one rain-soaked year in Seattle. Cravings for sunshine and clear, blue sky had me packing for Phoenix. With the move here, I looked forward to a new start. After 15-plus years of corporate America and six years in academic research science, I took a brave, deep breath, several supportive nudges from loved ones, and decided it was time to build my own business.

Q: Why did you open your business in Ahwatukee Foothills?

Why wouldn’t I? Ahwatukee is a nicely-sized, friendly, close-knit community, yet close enough to Chandler, Tempe and even Gilbert to support business growth.

And I noticed a “healthy vibe” here almost immediately. I often see a herd of bicyclists at 5:30 a.m. swarming their way down Chandler Boulevard, weekend families (grandparents to toddlers) hiking South Mountain, evening parks covered in soccer and baseball games, daily walkers, joggers and rollerbladers pumping their way up hills. The pursuit to achieve and maintain health here is contagious. It would be natural for a health business similarly to thrive in such an environment.

Q: How did you get the idea to open your business?

I am passionate about being honest when it comes to fitness and weight management. Too many programs, organizations and just plain gimmicks are only motivated to take your money. Just the other day, I had to restrain myself from telling a woman to put a bunch of products back on the shelf at the store – she didn’t need them. But clever marketing had convinced her that she did. There are so many myths, half-truths and downright lies swirling out there – how can anyone know what to believe anymore? So I decided to do something about it.

Q: What type of merchandise/services do you sell?

Physix offers a range of services to support and maintain good health. To achieve any level of fitness, we offer individual goal assessment, facility-based training, in-home training and outdoor circuit classes. We also license a nutrition-industry leader, dotFIT, for online calorie tracking and support. We tie it all together with education and ongoing communication – e-mails, phone calls and occasional encouragement and “way-to-go!” notes. It’s simultaneously comprehensive and individualized.

Q: What does your business offer that no one else does?

Everything I’ve got. I’ll bring it all to the table. Think about it – when it comes to fitness gadgets, exercise routines, protein powders, supplements and ways to stretch out, it’s really all out there. When you start a fitness program or hire a trainer, you aren’t buying a product but looking to a specific person for support. So look hard at the people you are about to entrust your health to – do they understand where you’re coming from, do they take the time to hear your particular concerns and problems, do they tailor a program to you? Or, do they just point you to the spin class or merely put you through the same routine as their last client?

Q: How have residents of the community responded to your business?

Amazingly supportive – both clients and colleagues. I’m always getting tips on how to get my name out there or told about opportunities to meet new people. The best support of all has been referrals. A referral is the absolute best feeling – it’s the highest compliment any business can hope for.

Q: What does your business have in store for the future?

We just launched a Youth Athletic Program in conjunction with the YMCA here in Ahwatukee. We also have a weight management program in the works – details coming soon.

Q: Anything else you want the community to know about you or your business?

We would welcome the opportunity to speak to a group (no charge) – a brown-bag session at work, a social meeting or even a casual home gathering of a few friends. We do an awesome “truth about weight management” presentation – educational and eye-opening for a lot of people.
