Living Well Retreats celebrates 1st year

The Living Well Retreats, provider of whole-person wellness programs, will celebrate its one year anniversary with a “Mindful Eating Dessert and Tea Tasting” from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Pomegranate Cafe, 4025 E. Chandler Blvd.

Dawn Rutledge, founder of the Living Well Retreats and Am I Hungry? facilitator, will help guide participants toward a lifestyle of health and wholeness. Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat books autographed by author Michelle May, M.D. and founder of Am I Hungry?, will be available for a special $20 price, sales tax included.

Registration open for spring Parks and Rec classes

Registration is open for the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s April and May class and program season. Choose from hundreds of special interest classes and sports programs at dozens of sites throughout the city. Classes feature experienced instructors, affordable prices and convenient times and locations. Late spring classes will run from early April through May.

Lights out to observe Earth Hour

The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa and Arizona Science Center will participate in Earth Hour 2010 on Saturday, March 27.

As the lights go down and the Sonoran Desert darkens, the resort will “go dark” in observance of the official Earth Hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. by powering down all interior and exterior lighting within reason. In addition, the resort and the Arizona Science Center are also offering an evening of celebration starting at 6 p.m. with the Sheraton Adventure Club’s Earth-oriented family activities, including glow stick tag, Earth-ball games, glow-in-the-dark face painting and craft demonstrations which promote Earth preservation. Arizona Science Center’s specialists will to provide hands-on fun through various activities for children of all ages.

Following the family activities, resort guests are invited to enjoy a viewing of Planet Earth beginning at 7:15 p.m. during Splash Cinema at the resort’s main pool. The movie will lead into the big Earth Hour event featuring stories and stargazing. Tribal member Tim Terry will be on hand from 8 to 9 p.m. to discuss the Gila River Indian Community’s respect for the environment in the GeoGreen lecture series entitled “Mother Earth: The Journey.”

Chili cook-off will benefit Ronald McDonald Charities

Collins College, Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and Sanford-Brown College will host the inaugural “High Noon Chili Shoot-Out” to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix. The chili cook-off, which is open to the public, will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10 at Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse, 5700 W. North Loop Road, Chandler.

Members of the community, including amateur and professional chefs, are invited to compete. All chili must be prepared on site and will be judged in one of three categories: red chili with beans, red chili without beans and an open category.

Registration is $40 for amateur cooks and $100 for professional cooks or chefs who cook at a resort or restaurant. Community members may enjoy all-you-can-eat samples for $5. All proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a “home away from home” for children and their families who travel to Phoenix to receive treatment for serious, often life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Local Valley celebrities will assist in the judging, and a “People’s Choice Award” will be given based on a popular vote.

Donate items at ARC to support troops

Once again the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC) is busy collecting items for its “Support Our Troops” program. This program sends care packages to our troops serving overseas. Care packages are sent to the troops twice a year in cooperation with Luke Air Force Base.

Volunteers will prepare the care packages on April 5, and donations of individual packages of nuts, beef jerky and snacks along with travel-sized personal items and sanitizer may be dropped off at the ARC until then. Because the care packages will be received in a Middle Eastern country during the hot summer months, soldiers are especially in need of sun block and water flavoring packets.

If you have a family member serving overseas this summer, you may drop off his or her name and address and the ARC would be happy to thank this soldier with a care package.

Kiwanis Ahwatukee Easter Parade, Spring Fling April 3

The 34th Annual Kiwanis Ahwatukee Easter Parade and Spring Fling will take place Saturday, April 3.

Sponsored again by the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee and beginning at 10 a.m., the parade forms at 48th Street and Warner Road and progresses north about one mile along 48th Street to Cheyenne Drive. Spectators are welcome to bring lawn chairs or spread blankets and enjoy the parade. Public address stations will be at Ahwatukee Country Club and at the corners of Ahwatukee Drive, Kiowa Street and Pawnee Street.

After the parade, all are invited to the Spring Fling at Ahwatukee Community Center Park at 48th Street and Warner Road. Enjoy entertainment by local groups, carnival rides, games, food, beverages and games for the whole family from about 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chamber Masters 2010 Charity Golf Tournament to benefit fireworks

The annual Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament take place Friday, April 16, at the Club West Golf Club, 16400 S. 14th Ave. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ahwatukee Red, White and Boom Fireworks Celebration.

The tournament begins with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start followed by dinner, tournament prizes and your best Mulligan story. This year the hole-in-one contests offer a Ford F-150 truck from San Tan Ford or your choice of three play-and-stay golf get-a-ways.  Bid on the silent auction items and enter the raffle for prizes and cash.

The entry fee for foursomes is $375 and includes a sporty windbreaker, dinner and goody bags. The fee for single golfers is $100. Sponsorships are available from $50 to $500.

If you don’t have a foursome but would like to golf, the chamber will take care of pairings for you. If you aren’t a golfer but want to join in the fun, attend the old-fashioned all-American barbecue.

The winning foursome will receive four pink tournament suit jackets with the chamber logo and “Chamber Master” embroidered on it. “We started the pink jackets tradition last year and it was a big hit so we are making it part of the tradition,” said chamber president Terri Kimble.

Hispanic Chamber hosting Black & White Ball, Business Awards

The Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (AZHCC) and Qwest Communications will present the 52nd Annual Black & White Ball and Business Awards starting at 6 p.m. April 17 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown.

The event is the premiere social gathering for Arizona’s Latino community and is also the AZHCC’s biggest annual fundraiser. This year’s theme is “Bailando al Exito” (Dancing Toward Success). The event features the Chamber’s prestigious business awards ceremony, and the AZHCC will also honor an Arizona Legacy, former Arizona Gov. Raul H. Castro.

Guests will also enjoy live musical entertainment, a ballroom dance competition and a live performance by the Tejano group, La Familia Band. Individual tickets are $300 for members and $350 for non-members.

ZooBrew is now Rock the Zoo

The event formerly known as ZooBrew is back and wilder than ever. Now called Rock the Zoo, this annual 21-and-over party fundraiser promises plenty of music and merriment while raising money for the Phoenix Zoo. The event will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the Zoo, 455 N. Galvin Parkway.

Nationally-recorded alternative rock band Vertical Horizon will energize the crowd with live performances throughout the night, while Marcy Playground will also make a guest appearance. Guests will have the opportunity to sample beverages from more than 30 vendors ranging from national and small craft breweries to large scale and independent wineries. A silent auction and a host of other fun activities will round out the evening.

General admission is $65 for members, $75 for non-members. VIP admission, which includes a catered meal, private bar and restrooms, is $125 for members and $135 for non-members (subject to availability). All proceeds will directly support the Phoenix Zoo’s mission and operations.

Hot weather supplies needed for homeless

Southwest Behavioral Health Service’s Homeless Outreach, a non-profit program to help homeless individuals with mental illness, is requesting donations of hot weather supplies.

The Homeless Outreach program is not a traditional shelter or food bank but is a mobile program that delivers supplies to the homeless where they live – on the streets, in alleyways, riverbeds, parks and near deserted buildings. The program covers all of Maricopa County. With homeless populations growing to record levels, the need for donations is greater than ever.

Items that are requested include water, sunscreen, hats or caps, lip balm, hygiene kits (including toothpaste and toothbrushes), lightweight T-shirts, shoes, socks, underwear and monetary donations.

Supply donations may be dropped off 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the front office of Southwest Behavioral Health, 3450 N. Third St., (602) 265-8338, or 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at SBH’s Homeless Outreach offices at the Day Resource Center, 1125 W. Jackson St., Suite 448, (602) 393-9930, ext. 3444. It is recommended to call before making any drop-offs to the Day Resource Center. Monetary donations to purchase supplies are greatly welcomed and may be dropped off at either location. 

 

RAD hosting Sock Hop

The Recreation and Athletics for the Disabled (RAD) along with the city of Chandler will bring the fifth annual Sock Hop to the Chandler Community Center, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave., Chandler, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 23.

Many bobbi-soxers will have their classy chassis adorned with poodle skirts and you can expect some cool cats to show up with T-shirts and rolled-up sleeves.  Both will have their dancing shoes flying as a live D.J. from Limelight Entertainment will be spinning “wax from the past.” Root beer floats will be provided.

RAD is a non-profit organization founded by parents of the disabled and other concerned citizens. Its slogan, “RAD pays so others can play,” is a simplification of its more serious mission of generating funding for any person who is disabled and wants to participate in recreation or athletic activities and otherwise couldn’t afford it.

Ahwatukee AARP Tax-Aide program under way

AARP Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance and tax preparation for low to moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older. This service is available to Ahwatukee Foothills residents from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays through April 14 in the Fire Station Community Conference Room at 4110 E. Chandler Blvd.

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and offer help with personal income tax returns. Completed returns are filed electronically to expedite any refunds. E-filing is also more efficient for the taxpayer, and refunds are received much sooner.

This free tax service is available by appointment and to walk-ins. To make an appointment, visit the fire station during the hours listed above and talk to one of the volunteers at the registration desk.

Silent Sundays at South Mountain Park

Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots get to call the roads of South Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department continues its popular Silent Sunday at South Mountain on the fourth Sunday monthly. Starting at 5 a.m. the park’s roadways past the Central Avenue gate, 10919 S. Central Ave., will be reserved for non-motorized use.

Remaining Silent Sunday dates for 2010 are March 28, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28 and Dec. 26.

AAF Metro hosts golf tourney

AAF Metro Phoenix will host the 30th annual Phoenix Golf Tournament on Friday, April 23, at Club West Golf Club, 1640 S. 14th St.

Registration, free golf clinics and free range practice begin at 11 a.m., followed by the tournament at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. Golf clinics are available at 11, 11:20 and 11:30 a.m.

Register by April 1 and you will automatically be entered into the early bird drawing for a twosome at Club West Golf Club. Advance tickets are $120 per person or $440 per foursome and include course fees, snacks, awards and dinner reception.

After April 1, tickets are $135 per person or $540 per foursome.

Recycle old car seats, check current ones

Did you know that car seats expire within six years? Phoenix Children’s Hospital will host its annual Keep Our Planet Neat, Recycle Your Car Set Demolition event from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 22, at Tempe Marketplace, 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. Volunteers will dismantle car seats, and all metal and plastic parts will be recycled.

According to Angelica Baker, Phoenix Children’s Hospital Child Safety Passenger Specialist, “Garage sales and trash cans are not the answer to unwanted, old car seats – de-manufacturing and recycling is. This is the proper way to dispose of car seats. It’s important not to throw car seats in the dump. We have seen many cases where people will pull old car seats out of dumpsters or trash cans and use them.”

Along with car seat recycling, the hospital will also offer community car seat checks. Trained technicians will check car seat installations and answer questions about car seat safety.

Golf Fest coming to the Raven

The consumer golf show Golf Fest will be at the Raven at South Mountain Golf Club, 3636 E. Baseline Road, April 23 to 25. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 23; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 24; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 25.

Golf tourney in memory of Jim Poulos

The inaugural golf tournament for the Jim and Tracy Poulos Charitable Foundation will take place Saturday, April 24, at Robson Ranch Golf Club in Eloy (about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson). The tournament honors the memory of Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jim Poulos, who passed away from cancer in September.

Registration begins, the range opens and continental breakfast will be served starting at 7:30 a.m., followed by a four-person scramble shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The cost – $125 for singles, $400 for foursomes – includes range balls, cart, green fees, entry fee, continental breakfast and lunch. Non-golfers may enjoy lunch for $20. Prizes will be awarded for various contests, and a silent auction will also take place. Hole sponsorships, corporate donations and items for the silent auction are being sought.

Hospitality Day and Swap Meet

The shooting and non-shooting public is invited to a free, enjoyable, educational hands-on day exploring the many shooting activities available at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club, 3960 N. Usery Pass Road, Mesa. Activities will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

Bring your whole family for a safe, fun experience and improve your marksmanship skills. Each of the competition divisions will be available for you to experience the many competition opportunities the club offers. Club members who have become national and world champions will demonstrate various shooting techniques, and community organizations will also put on demonstrations.

Registration opens May 8 for city aquatics programs

Registration for the following city of Phoenix summer aquatics programs begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8. Early registration is recommended (online or walk-in) as spaces are limited.

• Registration for all swim classes and programs begins May 8 and will continue throughout the summer or until classes fill to maximum capacity.

• The Cub Club program is available at all city pools and is free for children ages seven to nine years. This fun and exciting program, sponsored by Cigna Healthcare of Arizona, gives children the opportunity to learn skills such as assisting in a water emergency, use of personal floatation devices, when to call 9-1-1 and basic swimming instruction, all from a certified lifeguard. The participants will meet twice a week for five weeks beginning in early June. Upon completion participants receive a T-shirt, beach safe and prizes. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Cub Club Olympics on Saturday, July 17, hosted by Perry Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills.

• Children ages 10 to 12 will discover the fun of boating safety in the Discovery Guards program, free and available at all city pools. Discovery Guards develop basic First Aid and Water Safety skills, including boating safety and Personal Floatation Device training taught by a qualified lifeguard. The participants will meet twice a week for five weeks beginning in early June. Upon completion, Discovery Guards will receive a T-shirt and gym bag. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Discovery Guard Olympics on July 17, hosted by Perry Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills.

• The Junior Lifeguards program is free to youths 13 to 15 years old at select pools. Gain insight into the skills needed to be a Lifeguard from a certified lifeguard. Participants will learn water safety skills, be exposed to lifeguard training techniques, leadership, responsibility, first aid, pool operations and CPR/AED for the Professional Lifeguard. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a discount to a city of Phoenix Lifeguard Training class and be much better prepared for lifeguarding. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Junior Lifeguard Olympics on Saturday July 24, hosted by El Prado Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills. You will register onto a waitlist and pool staff will contact you for an interview. All participants will be chosen through an interview process. Interviews will begin the first week of June.

Sunday Farmers Market

The Arizona Community Farmers Markets Group hosts a farmers market on Sundays in the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center parking lot at 4700 E. Warner Road, just west of 48th Street. Hours are 8 to 11 a.m. July to mid October, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. mid October to April and 8 a.m. to noon May to June.

Admission is free. The market is family friendly, and canine good citizens are welcome.

Farmers’ Market at Wild Horse Pass

The Gila River Farmers’ Market at Wild Horse Pass, located at Rawhide, 5700 W. North Loop Road in Chandler, is now open and will run from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday year-round.

Bull riding at Rawhide

Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass, 5700 W. North Loop Road, is offering bull riding at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Fridays through January.  Fees are $60 for open bull riding, $40 for novice riding, $20 for calf riding (10 years and under) and $1 for sheep riding (6 and under).

The Phoenix Suns and AAA Arizona are offering a Suns Fan Celebration Cruise on Royal Caribbean’s “Oasis of the Seas” to the Eastern Caribbean, beginning Saturday, July 17 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Adventure Play Group

Adventure Play Group is a moms and baby play and support group that meets on a drop-in basis from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays in the nursery at Adventure Community Church, 4633 E. Chandler Blvd., Suite 112.

Food distributor launches food drive benefiting Ariz. residents

The Treasure Box, an economical meal program developed by San Diego-based Good Source Solutions, provides quality, nutritious food for everyone trying to stretch their food dollars. Treasure Box can feed a family of four for almost a week or an individual for nearly one month!

The Treasure Box is able to leverage its buying power through partnerships with more than 500 well-known and popular food brands to provide a pre-assembled, frozen box packed with $75 to $100 worth of food offered to individuals and families for just $30 per week.

Support domestic abuse awareness, recovery

Sunsational Cruises and Bravery Project are partnering to offer a journey of recovery. An escape to sea supporting domestic abuse awareness sets sail June 6 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The 2010 Bravery Project Cruise is a seven-night cruise to the eastern Caribbean with rates beginning at $979 per person for double occupancy. For each confirmed booking made through Polly Waln at Sunsational Cruises, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support Bravery Project.

Woodworkers looking for projects

The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.

Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.

The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.

Projects are needed, and organizations such as schools, hospitals, churches or other charities in need of something built or made are asked to contact president Tom Rosenthal at (480) 275-6631.

 

YMCA’s OPAS program

Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.

If you, or someone you know would like to use its services, or if you are interested in volunteering, call (602) 212-6088. Volunteers that can help seniors with transportation and friendly visiting are especially needed.
