Las Noches de las Luminarias coming up
Las Noches de las Luminarias returns to the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, in early December for 20 nights of musical entertainment, delicious food and 7,000 hand-lit luminarias.
Garden members will be able to purchase tickets beginning Sept. 14, and tickets will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 1.
The event will run 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 3 to 6 for members and their guests and Dec. 10 to 13, 17 to 23 and 26 to 30 for the general public.

Adult Co-ed Softball leagues return to Ahwatukee
The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, in partnership with the Independent Umpire/Softball Association, is bringing back Adult Co-ed Softball.
Starting the week of Sept. 20, five leagues will be available – two men’s leagues (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and three co-ed leagues (Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays). All leagues are designed for the recreational “D” Division of players, and games will be played at either Mountain Vista Park (I-10 and Ray Road) or Desert Foothills Park (Desert Foothills Parkway and Chandler Boulevard).
The cost is $650 per team, which includes Double Round Robin league, double header game schedule and a post season tournament with awards.

Chandler recruiting downtown ambassasors
The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, which promotes the downtown area and sponsors a year-round schedule of special events, is recruiting its next class of ambassadors.
The ambassador program is looking for outgoing individuals 18 years of age and older who are available for at least two hours a month to greet visitors and provide information at events. Safety course for adolescent babysitters
Chandler Regional Medical Center will host a two-day Safe Sitter course from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays Sept. 19 and 26 in the center’s Morrison Building at 1875 W. Frye Road, Chandler. Adolescents age 11 through 13 will receive hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques from trained Safe Sitter instructors so they are prepared to respond to crisis situations. The program’s goal is to reduce the number of unintentional deaths of children being cared for by their babysitters.
To successfully complete the 12-hour medically accurate program, students must pass a practical and written test, showing that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle emergencies.
The cost is $60 for the two-day course, and all supplies and lunch are included. Registration is required by calling 1-877-728-5414. Space is limited.
Church offering rent-a-space parking lot sale
Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th St., will host a parking lot sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7, and community members are invited to rent a space to bring their stuff, staff their booth and handle their own money.
Booths are available for $25 each and must be reserved in advance. The fee includes chairs for each booth and advertising. Six-foot tables are available for the first 60 reservations.
The sale is sponsored by Outreach Ministries and proceeds will go to local charitable organizations. A donation truck will be available after the sale for unsold items. The Outreach Ministry will also hold a coffee and bake sale.

DBG presents Biergarten

Design a bra, help create awareness of domestic violence
The Bravery Project is hosting the fundraising event, “Karma Cups: An Uplifting Affair,” from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Cup O’ Karma: Community Cafe for a Cause, 1710 W. Southern Ave., Mesa, to benefit efforts to support and create awareness of domestic violence in our communities.
Participants are invited to create their own uniquely designed bra and enter it in the Bra-Vogue Contest. Volunteers needed for haunted house, hayride
Volunteers are needed for the Eighth Annual Haunted House and Hayride taking place 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 23 to 25 at the Ahwatukee Community Swim & Tennis Center, 4700 E. Warner Road.
Volunteers may work two to four hours on one day, two days or all three days. The hosts are primarily looking for dependable high school students in need of community service hours and/or have an interest or background in theatrical productions.
Proceeds from this annual event help raise money for youth programs at the Center.

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Maricopa County Master Gardener Program holds certification classes throughout the Valley twice yearly. The classes teach future Master Gardener Volunteers the details on how to successfully garden in the Valley.

Classes offered for un- and under-employed
Training to YOU, a computer technology center located at 2200 N. Central Ave., Suite 100, is offering local un- and under-employed persons a unique opportunity to update their Microsoft Office skills. A number of half-day classes are available each week, and empty seats are available on a “pay-what-you-can” basis.

Woodworkers looking for projects
The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.
Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.
The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.
Projects are needed, and organizations such as schools, hospitals, churches or other charities in need of something built or made are asked to contact president Tom Rosenthal at (480) 275-6631.
Older children and larger sibling groups need adoption, too
Christian Family Care Agency hopes to draw attention to two very special groups of kids who need adoptive homes – children over the age of 10 and children from larger sibling groups (three or more children).
Louise Gonzales, of Christian Family Care Agency’s Phoenix office, said while progress is being made in these two areas, the need for loving parents willing to adopt these kids is still tremendous.

YMCA’s OPAS program
Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.
