Suns, Chances for Children team up to aid earthquake relief efforts in Haiti
The Phoenix Suns have joined forces with Chances for Children, a local organization that works to save the lives of children living in poverty in Haiti, to aid in the ongoing relief efforts of the Caribbean nation.
The Suns organization is making an initial donation of $20,000 and is encouraging the community to join in the effort by making a donation to Chances for Children online at www.suns.com. Every dollar donated will provide immediate relief by supplying basic life necessities such as food, water and medicine to those displaced by the massive earthquake that devastated the country on Jan. 12.
Chances for Children provides the financial and strategic support for an adoption center named Crèche Enfant de l’Jèsus (CEJ) located in the small village of Ti Mache, east of Port au Prince, Haiti. For more information on Chances for Children, visit www.chances4children.org.
Lions Club host booth at Farmer’s Market
The Ahwatukee Lions Club will have a booth at the Ahwatukee Farmer’s Market on Sunday, Jan. 24, and members will be on hand to answer questions about the club. They will also accept donations of unwanted eyeglasses and hearing aids. The Lions are also collecting used luggage, which will be donated to foster children agencies. The luggage will give children in transition a means of transporting their belongings.

Phoenix Perks activities at Pecos Senior Center

Richard Karn hosting celebrity golf classic
Actor Richard Karn, best known as Tim Allen’s sidekick, Al the Tool Time Guy, in the television show Home Improvement, as well as the host of Family Feud, is bringing his celebrity friends and his annual golf tournament and auction to the Valley to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
The dinner and auction will take place Sunday, Jan. 24 at Carefree Resort & Villas’ Opera House. The dress is casual and a cocktail reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, auction and music by local country star Nick Nicholson and Mark Wills. Tickets are $100 per person.
The golf tournament will be at Troon North Golf Club on Monday, Jan. 25. Registration is at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start noon. More than 30 celebrities will play in the tournament, each playing with a registered threesome.

AAA begins search for Crossing Guard of the Year
AAA Arizona is accepting nominations for its third annual Crossing Guard of the Year Award.
School administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students and community members are invited to describe why they believe their candidate deserves the Crossing Guard of the Year designation. Self-nominations will also be accepted. AAA Arizona staff will evaluate nominations to select finalists for the award based on dedication, friendliness, professionalism and safety.
Once finalists are selected, their performance and duties will be evaluated by AAA Arizona traffic safety staff. Two finalists, one from Maricopa County and Pima County, who demonstrate the best example of the procedures and responsibilities outlined in AAA’s Handbook for Adult Crossing Guards, will be awarded the honor. The winners will be announced on April 30, Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Stepping Stones of Hope offers Day at Camp Paz
Stepping Stones of Hope, a non-profit corporation, brings together children and their families who have experienced the loss of a loved one and provides a safe place to share their grief journey.
Day at Camp Paz for Kids (Paz means Peace in Spanish), is a day program reaching out to grieving children ages six to 17 to provide a neutral and safe environment where friendships are created and healing may take place. Day at Camp Paz for Grown-Ups program is held concurrently to focus on assisting adults to understand their own grief journey and learn how children’s grief experience differs.

EV Tour launches first amateur golf tournament season
East Valley Tour, a start-up golf tournament league, will open its membership to all amateur golfers every other Sunday beginning Feb. 28. The series of tournaments will be held at 15 premiere championship courses throughout the East Valley.
According to Tour Director Robert Bobber, “The tour will be affordable, competitive and fun.” Handicaps will be used to determine final scores in each division, making it competitive for golfers of all levels. Help turn an ordinary teenager into a princess
As the economy continues to grow tighter, extras like a beautiful dress for the prom may not be a reality for some girls this year. A fairy godmother-like program is waiting in the wings to help make sure these girls have a fairytale evening.
“The Cinderella Affair,” now in its ninth year, offers high school juniors and seniors a chance to choose a dress for free to wear on their special night. The event is an all-volunteer project put on by the East Valley Women’s League (EVWL) in collaboration with the Tempe Community Council (TCC).
The EVWL and the TCC will hold their annual dress drive from Feb. 8 to 21 to collect gently-worn dresses for the event. Drop box locations will be placed at Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe high schools, Centennial Middle School, the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, Kimberly Lewis School of Dance, Derma Health Institute and East Valley Bible Church (for addresses, visit the Web site below).
The dress selection event will be held March 26 and 27 at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center in Tempe. AARP Tax Aide to move for 2010
The Ahwatukee AARP-sponsored Tax-Aide group of volunteers who prepare income tax returns for senior citizens free of charge is moving from the Pecos Community Center to the Community Room at the Phoenix Fire Station on the north side of Chandler Boulevard, just east of 40th Street.
This free service, targeting seniors and low-to-moderate income individuals and families, will start around Tuesday, Feb. 2, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Last year over 400 Ahwatukee residents took advantage of this free service.

IHOP’S free pancake giveaway returns Feb. 23
IHOP has announced plans to serve millions of free pancakes again in celebration of National Pancake Day on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Planned as a celebration of friends, family and community, IHOP hopes the program will raise $1.75 million for Children’s Miracle Network, an international non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals and other worthy local causes.
More than 1,400 IHOP restaurants throughout the United States invite guests to enjoy a free short stack of IHOP’s signature buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on National Pancake Day. In return, guests are asked to donate what they would have paid for the free pancakes, or more, to the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community, or another designated local cause. Adventure Play Group getting started

Training to YOU, a computer technology center located at 2200 N. Woodworkers looking for projects
The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.
Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.
The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.

Older children and larger sibling groups need adoption, too
Christian Family Care Agency hopes to draw attention to two very special groups of kids who need adoptive homes – children over the age of 10 and children from larger sibling groups (three or more children).
Louise Gonzales, of Christian Family Care Agency’s Phoenix office, said while progress is being made in these two areas, the need for loving parents willing to adopt these kids is still tremendous.
Gonzales said parents willing to adopt children from these two areas often will move through the adoption process more quickly. She added that a parent’s age isn’t usually as big an issue when it comes to adopting an older child.

YMCA’s OPAS program
Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.
