Registration open for Rock Star classes

Music Maker Workshops in Ahwatukee Foothills, located at the southeast corner of Chandler Boulevard and 32nd Street, is now registering for the spring session of Friday Rock Star.

Classes are designed for students between the ages of 8 and 15 who wish to meet other musicians and ultimately play in a band. All ability levels are welcome. Students get to pick two instruments to study – bass, guitar or drums. At the end of the session, friends and family will get to enjoy a concert put on by the students.

Classes run Fridays March 5 to April 30 (with a built in spring break March 19). Beginner/Intermediate classes will meet 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Intermediate/Advanced classes from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost is $170.

Young Artists’ Competition seeks talented performers

Aspiring young performers between the ages of 16 and 20 are invited to enter the 11th Annual Arizona Young Artists’ Competition on Saturday, March 27, at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St.

From March 23 to 25, performers will compete in the categories of acting, modern dance and voice for a panel of industry professionals. At the conclusion of the preliminary process, four finalists from each category will be selected to compete in the final competition March 27. A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winner in each discipline. The audience will also have a chance to vote on a “People’s Choice” winner in each category. Tickets to the competition are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Local entertainment collaborations create March Madness at MADCAP Theaters

MADCAP Theaters has partnered up with Arizona State University Gammage and the Tempe Center for the Arts. Throughout March, MADCAP will host a tribute to the “The Rarest Greatness of Chuck Jones” in conjunction with the Tempe Center for the Arts exhibit honoring the late cartoonist, as well as showing the Oscar-nominated film Jesus Christ Superstar to celebrate the opening of the Broadway show at ASU Gammage in April.

World-renowned film scholar and animation expert Dennis Nyback will be at MADCAP Theaters at 5 p.m. March 6 to present a 16mm tribute to the pioneering animation of Chuck Jones. Tickets are $10. This event runs in conjunction with the show Chuck Amuck: A Legacy of Laughter that runs through June 18 at the Tempe Center of the Arts.

MADCAP Theaters will present a heavenly event with a screening of Jesus Christ Superstar at 7 p.m. March 25, with giveaways to the upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar at ASU Gammage. Tickets are $8, and the first five people to buy a ticket to the screening online at www.madcaptheaters.com and the first five people to buy a ticket at the box office will each get a pair of tickets to see Jesus Christ Superstar at ASU Gammage which runs April 6 to 11. Spiked! Thursdays at DBG kicks off with The Love Me Nots

Spiked! Thursdays returns for the spring season with fresh locations, cocktails and new music at The Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 North Galvin Parkway. The Thursday night happy hour and social event gets under way March 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. with Phoenix-based music group The Love Me Nots.

Tempe/Ahwatukee Young Life host Broadway-inspired variety show

The Tempe/Ahwatukee chapter of Young Life will host “Nite on Broadway” from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. The variety show will feature performances and appearances from local celebrities and artists.

Valley sports legend Jerry Colangelo will serve as the evening’s special guest. As a member of the Young Life Board of Directors, he will share his perspective on how the ministry has impacted his life and the community. 

“Nite on Broadway” will also feature a silent auction, Young Life Club skits and family-friendly performances by Taylor Anderson (opera singer), Rick Burress (magician), Riley Erin (Christian musician), Dan Hanson (comedian, Clean Comedy USA), Jenna Hardenbrook (dancer) and Erica Ross (dancer).

Young Life is a non-denominational Christian ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school and college-aged youth. This event marks the chapter’s 35 years in the East Valley.

Indian Market to combine innovation with tradition

The 52nd Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, “Where Art Meets Entertainment,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6 and 7 at the Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave.

The festival draws nearly 20,000 visitors and more than 700 American Indian artists. This year’s fair honors the clans, tribes and arts of the Apache peoples.

Spring Paintout at DBG

The Desert Botanical Garden and Scottsdale Artists League will co-sponsor their 15th annual Spring Paintout March 6 to April 4 at the Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

More than 40 of the league’s best landscape artists will set up their easels throughout the Garden and paint from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays in March. The public is encouraged to interact with them and see art and nature in new ways.

A show and sale will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 to 4, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Desert Botanical Garden and the Scottsdale Artists League’s Scholarship Fund.

Pueblo Grande earns rare distinction for the 2nd time

Phoenix’s Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park has, for the second time, earned a rare distinction from the American Association of Museums.

The honor from the association recognizes Pueblo Grande Museum’s success in achieving its mission and goals as well as using best practices and meeting or exceeding museum standards. The museum first earned accreditation in 1999.

Pueblo Grande Museum is located at 4619 E. Washington St., the site of a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village.

Contestants sought for Mrs. Arizona America Pageant

The Mrs. Arizona America Pageant is looking for contestants from all areas within the state to compete for the title of Mrs. Arizona America. Contestants represent a variety of backgrounds, lifestyles and personal interests and range from ages 21 to 72.

The pageant will take place May 22 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and contestants will compete in three categories: personal interview, evening gown and swimsuit.

Mrs. Arizona will go on to participate in the National Mrs. America Pageant in Tucson in September.

Target Day of Music offers free family fun

The Phoenix Symphony and Target are giving back to the community with a free, fun-filled musical afternoon from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Symphony Hall, 75 N. Second St.

Kids’ activities include exploring musical instruments in the instrument petting zoo, crafts and balloon artists. Food will be available for purchase.

Due to limited capacity, patrons wishing to attend must call the box office at (602) 495-1999 to receive a free voucher. On event day, vouchers will be redeemed at Symphony Hall for a general admission ticket. Patrons holding a voucher will receive tickets first, then any remaining tickets will be distributed to non-voucher holders on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Goodguys 1st Spring Nationals take places March 12 to 14 at WestWorld, 16601 W. Pima Road, Scottsdale, featuring more than 2,000 1972-and-earlier hot rods, customs, classics, street rods, muscle cars and trick trucks. The event will also include manufacturer and vendor exhibits, a swap meet and cars for sale area, special vehicle corrals on Saturday, model and pedal car show and lots of fun for the entire family.

In addition, special awards and featured vehicles will be showcased during the event, including the 2010 Muscle Car of the Year finalist, 2010 Custom Rod of the Year finalist, Truck of the Year late Finalist and the Gazette Pick.

‘40s Big Band Dance, USO Show coming up

The annual Night of the 40’s Big Band Dance and USO Show will take place Saturday, March 20, in an airplane hangar at Falcon Field in Mesa. Doors open at 4:30, with entertainment at 5:30 p.m. followed by a costume contest. The full 15-piece Sun Lakes Big Band will perform Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie style tunes from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Guests may also have their photo taken next to the “Sentimental Journey” B-15 World War II bomber.

‘Rock the Zoo’ tickets now available

Tickets are now on sale for “Rock the Zoo” (formerly known as ZooBrew), which will take place from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the Phoenix Zoo, 455 N. Galvin Parkway.

This annual adults-only fundraiser promises plenty of music and merriment while raising money for the Zoo. Nationally-known alternative rock band Vertical Horizon will energize the crowd with live performances throughout the night. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample beverages from more than 30 vendors. A silent auction and a host of other fun activities will round out the evening.

Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

General admission tickets are $55 for Zoo members and $65 for non-members. VIP admission tickets are $115 for Zoo members and $125 for non-members.

Breakfast, lunch with the butterflies

A special breakfast with the butterflies event will take place 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7, to celebrate the opening of the Spring Butterfly Exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

The breakfast event will take place in Dorrance Hall and is recommended for children ages three to 10. Enjoy a delightful catered breakfast, followed by children’s entertainment and butterfly-related activities. All guests will receive admission to the Marshall Butterfly Pavilion, and children will receive their own pair of butterfly wings to wear and take home. Breakfast tickets are $35 for adults and $30 for children (for Garden members), $40 for adults and $35 for children (for non-members).

A butterfly luncheon for adults will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Dorrance Hall. Guests will enjoy a buffet-style lunch, the cheerful sounds of acoustic trio Hot Club of Phoenix and an interactive and educational presentation by Terri Nacke, Eco-ista and Founder of La Bella Terre, Botany for the Body. NBC’s ‘The Biggest Loser’ is casting

The Herberger Theater Center is accepting applications for inclusion in its Art Gallery Exhibitions for the second half of 2010. Work is selected by a blind juried panel consisting of artists from various disciplines.

Kre8tive Kids hosting poetry writing contest

Kre8tive Kids’ 2010 Poetry Writing Contest is open to students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Entries will be divided into four grade divisions (K to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12).

The title and theme is “What Color is Love?” The theme relates to the fact that kids and adults should be open to accepting, respecting, embracing and even loving people of different racial and cultural backgrounds. This, however, does not mean that race and/or culture have to be written about as part of the poem … be Kre8tive.

Only one entry per person will be accepted. Entries must be submitted using the official Kre8tive Kids entry form and may not be more than 25 lines of text. At least one winner from each grade division will be selected, and each winner will receive a $100 value prize package.

Entries must be received by March 15, and winners will be determined by April 30.

Volunteers needed for Chandler Jazz Festival

The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership is looking for volunteers to help serve as greeters, tickets sellers and pourers at the Chandler Jazz Festival’s Beer & Wine Garden on March 26 and 27.

The Chandler Jazz Festival, now in its 11th year, will feature two days of free music in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park. Sidewalk bands will also play along the streets of Historic Downtown Chandler on Saturday afternoon. Last year’s festival attracted more than 15,000 people.

Volunteers are needed for shifts on Friday, March 26, from 3:45 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, March 27, from 3:20 p.m. to 10 p.m. Each shift is approximately two hours. Anyone who volunteers to be a pourer must have either completed a training class within the past year or be willing to attend a one-hour class which will be held in March.

All volunteers will receive a Chandler Jazz Festival T-shirt and a Downtown Dividends discount card. Proceeds from the Beer & Wine Garden benefit the Downtown Chandler Community Foundation.

The Phoenix Symphony partners with St. Mary’s Food Bank

This March, The Phoenix Symphony will once again partner with St. Mary’s Food Bank as participants in Orchestras Feeding America.

This nationwide project started last year and was inspired by the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained string player who was living on the streets of Los Angeles as a result of a mental illness. Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez noticed Nathaniel and was drawn to his talent, intelligence and passion for Beethoven. The fascinating story led to the film The Soloist, a film about Ayers, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr.

This film and the Orchestras Feeding America project are testaments to the power of music. Last year’s Orchestras Feeding America project involved 250 orchestras collecting over 200,000 pounds of food.

Phoenix Symphony patrons may donate items at Symphony Hall during the “Symphonic Star Wars” and “Star Wars Mania” concerts beginning one hour prior to the start of each concert. Concerts on March 26 and 27 begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinee on March 27 begins at 2 p.m. The Family Series concert on March 27 starts at 2:30 pm.

The most needed items are dry soup, rice, powdered or canned milk, macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter, beans, canned fruit and vegetables, tuna, canned meats, soup, pasta and fruit juices/sip-sized juices. For every 10 accepted items donated, Phoenix Symphony patrons will receive a voucher good for two tickets for an upcoming 2009-10 Symphony concert (some exclusions apply.)

The hills are alive at Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre

Maria and all of the Von Trapps will sing up a storm this spring when Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre presents The Sound of Music, directed by David Mittel.

The Arizona State University Art Museum Ceramics Research Center will present its bi-annual ceramics gala, CERAM-A-RAMA: A (really) Progressive Clay Affair, March 4 to 7. Events include tours of private homes, exhibitions, live and silent auctions.

Mid-season auditions open for the Phoenix Boys Choir

Due to ongoing demand, the Phoenix Boys Choir is open for auditions mid-season for the first time in its history. Auditions are being scheduled for boys from seven to 14 years old for three levels of the Boys Choir – the Training (located in Tempe, Peoria, Scottsdale and Phoenix), Cadet and Town choirs. Boys will be a part of one of America’s largest and most prestigious choirs and will join 60 years of excellence, earn a sophisticated musical education, learn multi-cultural music and make lifetime friendships.

During the audition, parents and potential members will have the opportunity to observe a typical rehearsal and talk with current parents and choir alumni. Eligible boys should possess an unchanged, clear and pleasant singing voice and a good ear for music. Previous choir experience is not required and there is no need to prepare audition material. Families will be informed immediately after the audition if the boy is accepted and at which choir level he will begin. Boys selected to join the choirs will be invited to become active members of the choir directly following their acceptance. Scholarships and financial aid for tuition and other costs are available.

The annual Jazz in the Garden Concert Series will run Friday evenings from March 5 to June 25 at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

Phoenix Suns Charities announces 2010 gala 

Phoenix Suns Charities invites Valley residents to rub elbows with Phoenix Suns players, coaches and alumni at the annual Suns & Stars gala on Saturday, March 13, at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, 340 N. Third St. Guests will also enjoy entertainment, dinner and much more.

Tickets are now on sale. All proceeds will benefit Phoenix Suns Charities, which works to improve the lives of Arizona youth and families. Other sponsorship table options are available as well as limited individual tickets.

Costello, Cash and more

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts announces its 2010 Desert Sky outdoor concert series, which will feature an all-star line-up of musical talent on Friday and Saturday evenings from March 21 through May 8 in the Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater at 75th Street and Main Street in Scottsdale.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., and gates open at 6:30 p.m. Low lawn chairs, pillows and blankets are welcome in designated areas.

Scheduled performances: March 21, Gilberto Gil; March 26, Roseanne Cash; April 9, Elvis Costello Solo; May 1, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers; and May 8, Solas & Bearfoot.

Dinner on the Desert

The Desert Botanical Garden will host Dinner on the Desert starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

The evening begins in the Ottosen Entry Garden with a signature cocktail and a final glance at the Allan Houser: Tradition to Abstraction exhibit. As the sun sets, guests will take in the evening beauty of the Garden as they make their way to Dorrance Hall to bid on plants, pots and garden art and savor sumptuous hors d’oeuvres. A short stroll takes you to the magical setting of the Stardust Foundation Plaza for a Native-American inspired dinner. The party continues at Boppart Courtyard with entertainment and dancing under the stars.

Mother’s Day lunch and concert with Esteban

Celebrate Mother’s Day (May 9) with the musical talents of Esteban in concert at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

Two concert options are available. The 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. show features Esteban in concert with a delicious catered brunch (table seating only). The 4 to 6 p.m. show features Esteban in an intimate concert setting (auditorium style seating only).

Tickets for the 11 a.m. concert and brunch are $85 (doors open at 10 a.m.). Tickets for the 4 p.m. concert only are $50 (doors open at 3 p.m.). Tickets are limited, and advance ticket purchase is recommended.
