Girl Scouts send packages to female soldiers

Six female soldiers will have happier holidays this year when they receive care packages from Girl Scout Troops 774 and 1537 from the Ahwatukee neighborhood. The scouts and their families assembled packages with items such as snacks, wipes and magazines.

The care packages were sent to female sailors in the United States Navy, assigned to Navy Operational Support Center Phoenix and currently mobilized in Iraq. The Snell and Wilmer Law Firm of Phoenix provided shipping for the care packages.

Girls just wanna have fun … and launch rockets!

Nov. 8 was a gorgeous day at Desert Foothills Park – a perfect day to launch rockets at the annual Daddy-Daughter Girl Scout Rocket Launch.

Together with their dads, moms, grandparents and siblings, 44 girls from 10 Daisy, Brownie, Junior Girl Scout and Cadet troops from Horizon Community Learning Center experienced the thrill of building a rocket and successfully launching into the depths of the sky to gently return to the earth by way of a plastic parachute.

The rocket launch was coordinated by Susan and Bob Hale of Troop 900, along with Sandi Gomez and Sheryl Houle of Troop 1280. Eric Miller of PADT, Inc., a provider of complete mechanical engineering services, agreed to sponsor the rockets and engines. Miller and other volunteers helped the girls and their dads build the rockets and were present the day of the event.

The girls received an activity patch for their vests. In the future, event coordinators hope to turn it into a Science Try-It, officially recognized by Girl Scout headquarters.
