Thunder frosh Garner medals

Desert Vista’s freshmen had seven wrestlers on the podium at the state championship meet.

Zack Tamburo, Brandon Fox, Nick Marek and Jared Hancock were runners-up in their weight divisions.

Copper Gardner, Jake Hanson and Dylan Fischer placed third in their weight classes while Isak Broadhead was fourth in his division.

The Thunder varsity had state champion in sophomore Robbie Mathers at the 112-pound class.


Oh Say Can You Sing

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be holding auditions Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for singers to perform the National Anthem prior to home games this season.

No appointments are necessary and performers will audition in the order they arrive. Performers can enter the ballpark through Gate E on the Gila River Casio Plaza and check in on the concourse. Free parking is available on the south side of the ballpark at 4th Street and Lincoln.

Auditions are open to all ages, however children under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Performers are encouraged to bring a musical resume although it is not mandatory.

Women Looking for Men

The Phoenix Mercury, the local Womens National Basketball Association  franchise, will be holding tryouts for its official all-male practice squad at Saturday, March 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the US Airways Center.

Men will compete with other men for a spot on the 15-man squad that will scrimmage and train with the two-time WNBA champions at select practices from April through August.

Prospects must be at least 18-years-old. Tryouts will consist of full court scrimmaging on the Mercury and Phoenix Suns practice courts as well as drills to test basketball skills.

Registration is available through March 27 at
