Here: CARE brings best-seller Half The Sky to life in movie theaters nationwide

NCM Fathom and CARE are partnering on a one-night event inspired by stories from the New York Times bestseller Half the Sky by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Celebrate International Women’s Day and be inspired to help women and girls everywhere turn oppression into opportunity. The event features musical performances, celebrity commentary and the world premiere of Woineshet, a short film by Academy Award-winner Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone. India.Arie, Maria Bello, Diane Birch, Michael Franti, Dr. Helene Gayle, Angelique Kidjo, Nicholas Kristof, Marisa Tomei, Sarah, Duchess of York and others will make appearances.

Experience Half the Sky at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at AMC Ahwatukee 24, 4915 E. Ray Road.

The exclusive two-hour event was recorded live at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University on Feb. 11. A portion of ticket sales will support CARE’s work in more than 70 countries.


Near: Tempe/Ahwatukee Young Life hosts Broadway-inspired variety show

The Tempe/Ahwatukee chapter of Young Life will host “Nite on Broadway” from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. The variety show will feature performances and appearances from local celebrities and artists.

Valley sports legend Jerry Colangelo will serve as the evening’s special guest. As a member of the Young Life Board of Directors, he will share his perspective on how the ministry has affected his life and the community.

“Nite on Broadway” also will feature a silent auction, Young Life Club skits and family-friendly performances by Taylor Anderson (opera singer), Rick Burress (magician), Riley Erin (Christian musician), Dan Hanson (comedian, Clean Comedy USA), Jenna Hardenbrook (dancer) and Erica Ross (dancer).

Young Life is a non-denominational Christian ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school and college-aged youth. This event marks the chapter’s 35 years in the East Valley.
