Panda Express Day supports DV Grad Night
Community members are invited to help support Desert Vista High School’s Grad Night by eating at Panda Express, 4025 E. Chandler Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20. Grad Night is an all-night celebration that begins immediately following commencement. Buses transport graduates to the F1 Race Factory, where they remain until 5 a.m. the next morning. While there, they will enjoy a wide range of entertainment and supervised activities.

Kindergarten parents invited to orientation at all Kyrene elementary schools
Parents of kindergarten-age children are invited to the Kyrene School District Kindergarten Orientation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at all Kyrene elementary schools. Parent orientation is for children who will turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010.
Each school’s principal and kindergarten teachers will present important information. Go to www.kyrene.org and click on the “maps/calendars” link to locate which school your child will attend.
Families who do not live within Kyrene boundaries, but are interested in having their child attend a Kyrene school, should complete an “Open Enrollment” form at www.kyrene.org/oe.

Kryene offers sports physicals
A new sports season begins soon and in order to sign up and try-out student athletes need a current sports physical on file.
Physico Health Assessments will offer sports physicals from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Akimel A-al Middle School, 2720 E. Liberty Lane, and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Aprende Middle School, 777 N. Desert Breeze Blvd. in Chandler. All middle school athletes are welcome. The cost is $25, cash only. Physico will donate a portion of all proceeds to the Kyrene Athletic Program.

DV Key Club sponsoring blood drive
The Key Club at Desert Vista High School is sponsoring a blood drive with United Blood Services from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, in the school’s small gymnasium, 16440 S. 32nd St. Donors are urgently needed to help injured and ill patients.

‘African Storytelling Tradition’ offered at SMCC
The award-winning South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute will offer a brand new storytelling class this spring, focusing on traditional African folklore.
The class, entitled “The African Storytelling Tradition” (STO283), will focus on the history and practice of storytelling in Africa. Class instructor is Marilyn Omifunke Torres, an SMCC adjunct faculty member. Torres has been an ordained West African traditional storyteller for more than 30 years and has received two chieftaincies.
The class will run for 16 weeks on Thursday evenings, from 6 to 9:05 p.m., beginning Jan. 25 in Room PAC-739 on the SMCC Main Campus, 7050 S. 24th St. Tuition for the three-credit course is $213, plus a $15 registration fee.

Catholic Schools Week observed at Seton Catholic
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School will observe Catholic Schools Week Jan. 31 to Feb. 6.
Breakfast will be provided for faculty and staff on Monday, Feb. 1, compliments of Student Council members, and there will be music at lunch. Dress is Spring time flower power (60’s hippy dress).
An All School Mass honoring grandparents will take place Tuesday, Feb. 2 (RSVP required for grandparents) and a complimentary Subway lunch will be provided for all students and staff. Dress is Seton Catholic uniform.
Student Council representatives will attend Diocesan Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Attire is hot fun in the summer fun (board shorts, T-shirts and sunglasses).
Music will play during lunch Thursday, Feb. 4. Dress is Halloween revisited (no masks, please). A Variety Show will begin at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Admission is $5.
A Big Pep Assembly and 25th Annual Seton ‘THON (5K) begin at 8:15 a.m. in gym on Friday, Feb. 5. The student body is hosting this fund-raiser walk-a-thon to raise dollars for classroom technology enhancements. Proceeds will be shared with the St. Vincent de Paul charity ministry program of “Shifting Gears,” a working-poor ministry in downtown Phoenix (to help students achieve their goal of raising $30,000, donations may be made at www.SetonCatholic.org). Dress is THON T-shirts and shorts (knee length) or sweat pants. Someburros will sponsor a complimentary lunch for all students.

MPHS Baseball Boosters hosting golf classic
The Mountain Pointe Baseball Boosters’ Fifth Annual Pride Baseball Golf Classic will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at Club West Golf Club, 16400 S. 14th Ave. The classic features a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start, dinner and a silent auction.

SMCC offers basic E.M.T. training
Students seeking to become a certified Emergency Medical Technician can take one eight-hour course this spring at South Mountain Community College. Those who complete the class will be prepared to seek national certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Two classes are offered (Section 61207, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 19 to May 13, 4 to 8 p.m.; and Section 61208, Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 20 to May 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the SMCC Main Campus, 7050 S. 24th St.
60-day review of TransMath runs until Feb. 22
The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review for TransMath, a resource to support the mathematics curriculum in middle school for students with identified disabilities placed in resource pull-out classes. Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review resources and provide feedback.
All feedback will be reviewed by the Exceptional Student Services Department and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process.
The materials consist of three levels: Level 1, Developing Number Sense; Level 2, Making Sense of Rational Numbers; and Level 3, Understanding Algebraic Expressions. Each title contains a teacher guide, student text, interactive text (workbook) and student assessments. Teachers also have access to the mbook, an online teacher guide.

Seton receives major grant from GRIC
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School has been awarded a $250,000 grant by the Gila River Indian Community that will be used to help fund completion of the new classroom building scheduled to begin construction in early 2010.
On an annual basis, through the State Shared Revenue Program, the Gila River Indian Community awards 12 percent of its gaming revenues directly to cities, towns and counties for services that benefit the general public.

High School Foundation selling Suns tickets
The Tempe Union High School Education Foundation benefits many students throughout its seven schools in the form of scholarships, teacher enrichment and providing learning opportunities that would not normally occur.
The Foundation is currently selling Phoenix Suns tickets for the Philadelphia game on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., giving community members an opportunity to enjoy the game and at the same time make some money for our kids.
Tickets are $25 each, and the Foundation makes $10 for each ticket sold.
For each ticket purchased, the person will receive a free raffle ticket for the chance to win an autographed picture of Leandro Barbosa and a limited edition money ball from the 2009 All-star game, as well as a gift from the Phoenix Suns at the game. Details will be provided when tickets are purchased.

The Desert Vista Theater Troupe will present the following performances in the school’s Black Box Theatre at 16440 S. 32nd St.: One Acts Jan. 20 to 22 and Children’s Hour March 10 to 12. My Fair Lady will run April 29 to May 1 in the Dr. Joe McDonald Auditorium.

SMCC offers GED high school equivalency testing
South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th St., is offering GED testing for individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 must bring a notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian, along with an official letter of withdrawal from their last school attended. The GED testing fee is $75, with a $15 re-test fee for each subject area. Testing is by appointment only, and pre-registration is required prior to testing. Pre-registration takes place on Monday afternoons between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Testing takes place on Wednesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tests are available in English, Spanish and large-print. Special accommodations are available for examinees with documented disabilities.

60-day review of Kyrene health materials runs until March 26
The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review of lessons and resources to support Strand 8 (Growth & Development) and Strand 9 (HIV/AIDS & STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) of the Kyrene Expanded Health Curriculum.
Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review the lessons and resources in addition to the “Guidelines for Presenters” document and provide feedback. All feedback will be reviewed by the Health Steering Committee and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process.
The materials will be available for public review through March 26 at the Kyrene District Office, 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe. Office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
CGCC begins campaign to construct outdoor green classroom
Imagine an outdoor classroom that uses the sun and wind to save and generate energy – a “living” classroom designed to teach students about sustainability and environmental technology through hands-on learning and interaction.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College students and faculty are looking forward to this vision becoming a reality as the college implements a fundraising campaign to secure materials, labor donations and financial support from local businesses and the community in order to construct an Environmental Technology Center on the college’s Pecos campus.
CGCC’s first partner with the project, Jan Lorant, principal of Gabor Lorant Architects Inc., has volunteered many hours to date, consulting, site planning and designing the Environmental Technology Center. The 1,200-square-foot open classroom will have solar panels, amphitheater-style seating and energy monitoring devices, surrounded by demonstration areas, gardens, wind turbines and environmental education information kiosks.

SMCC presents ‘Black Women Walking’
In celebration of Black History Month, South Mountain Community College, the SMCC Black Student Union and Seek First Entertainment will present Black Women Walking, a one-act play spotlighting the achievements of 11 notable African-American women, Feb. 11 to 13.
A school-day performance intended for elementary-age students begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 and evening performances will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 and 13 in the SMCC Performance Hall at 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Road.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $5 for seniors age 55 and older.
