MEA kindergartners hold food drive

Montessori Educare Academy’s Kindergarten Class of 2010 organized a canned food drive to benefit the Mountain Park Community Church Food Pantry.

The group of 11 kindergartners collected over 350 items to donate to the food pantry. Items collected over the last two weeks included a wide range of canned food, dry goods and baby formula.

The Food Drive culminated Dec. 17 at MEA’s seventh annual Cookies and Carols Concert, in which students ages 12 months to 6 years performed a variety of holiday songs for friends and family.

Mountain Park Community Church’s Food Pantry serves an average of four to seven families daily. This food drive is part of Montessori Educare Academy’s continuing effort to educate the students on compassion and community service. The kindergartners were completely responsible and involved in the organization, advertising, collection, transport and stocking of the food pantry. Pastor Greg Battle from the church assisted the children in the stocking process and explained how the pantry serves our local community needs.

Montessori Educare Academy is located at 1244 E. Chandler Blvd.

Families helping families

Tough economic times increase the burden on organizations such as Homeward Bound, which provides housing assistance to more than 150 struggling Phoenix families.

Recently, 7,575 diapers, 5,871 baby wipes and cash were delivered to Homeward Bound from Summit School of Ahwatukee. The effort was led by the seventh- and eighth-grade student council and their advisor, middle school teacher Melissa France. This is the sixth year that preschool through eighth-grade students have helped this organization.

Summit students also assisted 30 Homeward Bound families in November by providing all of the items needed for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, plus fun family games.
