Phoenix Symphony holding Halloween costume contest

Little ghosts and goblins will fill Symphony Hall on Oct. 31 as The Phoenix Symphony presents “Trick or Treat.”

Pre-concert activities begin at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby and include a Halloween costume contest, meet and greet with the Arizona Ghostbusters, a photo booth to capture the memory and a Halloween-themed craft.

The Oct. 31 concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at Symphony Hall, 75 N. Second St. Tickets for “Trick or Treat” range from $10 to $18 and can be purchased by calling the box office at (602) 495-1999 or by visiting www.phoenixsymphony.org.

 

ASU Día de los Muertos celebration

The 10th Annual Día de los Muertos Festival Exhibit will run through Jan. 8 at the Arizona State University Museum of Anthropology, SHESC Building, on the Tempe campus. The gallery will be filled with traditional altars, cajitas (small traveling altars) and artwork celebrating this unique holiday and its 10th anniversary. Admission is free.

An opening reception will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29, in which Dr. Carmen King will present “Searching for Origins: Day of the Dead in Colonial Mexico” at 6 p.m., followed by music, food and a performance. The event is free and open to the public.

'Out to Lunch’ free fall concert series at MAC

Mesa Arts Center will host free outdoor concerts from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 17 in the Wells Fargo Garden, 1 E. Main St., Mesa. Chairs and lawn seating are available, but guests are encouraged to bring stadium cushions and blankets. Brown bags and picnic baskets are welcome. All Out to Lunch concerts are free and open to the public.

Viesturs kicks off National Geographic at MAC Oct. 28

America’s most acclaimed mountaineer, Ed Viesturs, will kick off the 2009-10 National Geographic Live Arizona speaker series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St., Mesa. Called “the ultimate climbing machine” by Men’s Journal, preeminent alpinist Ed Viesturs has successfully ascended Mount Everest seven times, mostly recently in May 2008. Join him as he shares his awe-inspiring experiences and stories of determination and accomplishment.

Grand Canyon State Games hosting annual art contest

The Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest promotes creativity through art as an effective method for artists across the nation to express their dreams and ideas for a successful life and a better community.

Draw, paint, decoupage, be innovative artistically as the challenge is on to use creativity and imaginations to put this year’s themes into art. Themes range from topics on Character Education, being Tobacco and Alcohol free, to the importance of taking care of your bodies in a healthy manner and the importance of practicing peace in your everyday life.

The contest is free, and entries will be judged on originality, theme interpretation and use of media. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to the top winners from each grade, kindergarten to 12, and two adult categories (ages 19 to 49, and 50 and up). 'The President’s Own’ U.S. Marine Band offers free concert at MAC

“The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, America’s oldest professional musical organization, will present a free performance filled with tradition and fanfare at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St., Mesa.

 Dìa de Los Muertos celebration at MAC

On Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 1, from noon to 5 p.m., the Mesa Arts Center campus (1 E. Main St., Mesa) will ignite in a celebration of the memory of departed loved ones. Dìa de Los Muertos is a community celebration complete with a community altar, live music and performances, food, a mercado featuring an assortment of Day of the Dead merchandise, jewelry, arts & crafts, children’s activities and more. The event is free to the public.

In addition to the many events at Mesa Arts Center, a free trolley will run between Mesa Contemporary Arts, Arizona Museum for Youth and Arizona Museum of Natural History throughout the two-day event. Mesa Contemporary Arts will be free to the public on Saturday and Sunday, while Target 3 for Free will provide free access to the other two museums on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

 Storytelling at the 'Buzz

The South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute will host the next storytelling event from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at The CoffeeBuzz, 4804 E. Chandler Blvd., Suite 110. The story theme this month is A Cornucopia of Tales. The next event will be held Dec. 7 (Happy Holidays).

Even though these sessions are called “Stories for Grownups,” everyone is welcome. Coffee and good food are available, and there is no cover charge.

Heard Museum continues Community Second Sundays

The Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., is offering free admission to Arizona residents on the second Sunday of most months. In addition, the Heard is partnering with local Valley nonprofit organizations and charities to give back to the community. Visitors to the museum, whether free or paid admission, who bring an item will receive a coupon for 2-for-1 admission when they next visit.

This fall, the Heard is asking the public to aid these special organizations:

• Sunday, Nov. 8: Bring a personal item (such as grooming items) or a household item to aid veterans and their families. The donations will assist veterans who are hospitalized or in other need and to their families who are staying in apartments nearby the Phoenix Veterans’ Hospital.

• Sunday, Dec. 13: Bring an unwrapped toy to help provide a merry holiday for underprivileged American Indian children in the Valley.

Palette of Homes Tour benefits Free Arts of Arizona

The Palette of Homes Tour, sponsored by Phoenix Home & Garden magazine to benefit Free Arts of Arizona, will occur on Sunday, Nov. 8, taking participants through exceptional residences in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

Monies raised from this event support Free Arts of Arizona’s therapeutic art programs for children who are abused, homeless or at-risk and living in group homes, homeless shelters or treatment centers.

Scottsdale Artists’ School 17th annual “Beaux Arts” reception and silent auction will be held 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the school, 3720 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale.

Phoenix Boys Choir fall gala coming up

The Phoenix Boys Choir invites community members to attend its fall 2009 gala, “A Night of Wondrous Entertainment,” beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Herberger Theater Center Stage West, 222 E. Monroe St.

The cabaret-style evening will include a performance by the Tour Choir, silent and live auctions and cocktail reception.

Set a “PlayDate with Chrysalis” and see Childsplay’s Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells!

Chrysalis, together with Childsplay will host the exclusive Valley debut of Childsplay’s Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! on Dec. 5 at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. The unique “fun-raising” event includes a day at Tempe Center for the Arts, the performance, a concession treat, interactive activities and a silent auction with proceeds going to the Chrysalis shelter. Phoenix Children’s Chorus announces 2009-10 season

The renowned Phoenix Children’s Chorus has announced its 25th Anniversary Season. The chorus is comprised young singers from second to 12 grades in four distinct choirs.

 Phoenix Children’s Chorus hosting auditions

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus will hold auditions for boys and girls, second through 8th grades, for the 2009-10 season. Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. Third St.

No prior choral training is required – applicants need only possess a clear, pleasant singing voice and the desire to learn. There is no fee to audition.

The choir has over 200 children in two training choirs and two touring choirs. This award winning chorus has performed throughout Europe and Russian and has taken top honors at the World Choral Olympics. The touring choirs will be traveling to China for a three-city tour in June 2010.

 Sonoran Desert Chorale

Inspired with optimism, the Sonoran Desert Chorale has themed its new season “How Can I Keep From Singing”? and features a year of heart-lifting, infectious songs designed to entertain audiences.

The Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave., is celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season with the following line up this season:

• Sprinkled throughout the season will be the Rhythms of LIFE series - a unique collection of powerful and personal stories of the most celebrated artists in history. The series begins at 3 p.m. and includes “Pardon My English” Gershwin By Ira Jan. 10, “Love Letters: From Beethoven to Bernstein” Feb. 14 and “Copland and Me” April 11.

• If you who love renowned artists like Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo or Josh Groban, then you will love the Canadian “popera” sensation Destino, who will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 19.

 Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival expands

After a year of negotiations, the 13-year-old Phoenix Jewish Film Festival and the five-year-old East Valley Jewish Film Festival have merged.

This year’s festival gets under way Feb. 20, with a total of 10 films being shown at two geographically spaced venues - Harkins Chandler Crossroads off Route 202 and the Harkins Camelview 5 in Scottsdale.

 Amateur film-makers invited to enter contest

A new collaboration between the Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival and the New Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix has resulted in the creation of the Scholastic Film Contest.

The contest is open to all amateur scholastic film-makers in the United States. Film-makers do not have to be Jewish to enter the contest, but must fall into the following two grade levels for which one winner will be selected for each level – Level 1, high school students grades 9 to 12; and Level 2, undergraduate or graduate students at any college or university.

Submitted films must be no longer than 10 minutes and of obvious Jewish content or reflect issues related to any cultural, political historical, religious, geographical or any other aspects of Jewish life.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 15.

Indian Market continues to combine innovation with tradition

The 52nd Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, “Where Art Meets Entertainment,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6 and 7 at the Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave.

The world-acclaimed festival draws nearly 20,000 visitors and more than 700 of the nation’s most outstanding and successful American Indian artists.
