Liberty Tax Service honors military and veterans

Liberty Tax Service salutes veterans and active duty military and their immediate family members (spouses, siblings and parents of deployed service members) with free tax preparation for first time customers at participating offices during the week of March 22 to 28.

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre honors Valley Veterans

Broadway Palm owner Tom Prather, a veteran of the Korean War, has donated 150 complimentary show and dinner tickets to local Veteran organizations throughout the Valley for performances of GEORGE M! Prather commented, “GEORGE M! is filled with patriotic songs and it’s our way of saying thanks to those who have served this country!“

Veterans, Reservists and Active Duty Military Personnel may also receive a $10 discount when they present their military identification card for any Saturday evening performance of GEORGE M! through April 10 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, 5247 E. Brown Road, Mesa.

GEORGE M! follows the life of the first superstar of the American musical theater, George M. Cohan, over a 60-year period from his childhood on the vaudeville circuit with his family as “The Four Cohans,” to New York where he starts his 25-year complete control of the Broadway stage. Known as “the man who owned Broadway” in the decade before World War I, he is considered the father of American musical comedy. 

Adult tickets range from $45 to $54 and include a buffet meal. Tickets for children 12 and under are $22. Show only seats are available for $28. Student rush tickets (show only) are $10 and available 30 minutes prior to curtain to currently enrolled high school and college students with a valid school ID. This offer is not valid for previously purchased tickets.

Obermeit completes training

Army Pvt. Tyler J. Obermeit has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.

He is the son of Cheryl Fromm of Ahwatukee Foothills and Carl Obermeit of Sequim, Wash., and is a 2009 graduate of Desert Vista High School.

 

Vandevoort returns after deployment

Army Sgt. Jon W. Vandevoort has returned to Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, after being deployed to Afghanistan for one year. The soldier is one of 3,500 members of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Richardson. Airborne combat team members included soldiers assigned to one of six battalions and regiments of the 25th Infantry Division.

The airborne brigade served in three eastern provinces of Afghanistan, which included the Paktya, Paktika and Khost. Some of the challenges the brigade soldiers faced included poverty, unemployment, security and management of natural resources and government institutions. Soldiers improved roads, provided vocational training in construction and civics, improved and re-opened 29 schools, remodeled six medical clinics and improved three district courthouses.

Vandevoort, a fire team leader, is assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. He has served in the military for six years.

He is the son of Robert Vandevoort of Ahwatukee Foothills and is a 2001 graduate of Desert Vista High School.

 

Help for wounded Marines

Master Sergeant Steve Soha heads up the Wounded Warrior Regiment that includes Arizona and West Texas to help wounded and injured Marines after they return home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ahwatukee American Legion Post 64 and Veterans Club

The Ahwatukee American Legion Post 64 and Veterans Club meets at 3 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center, 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive.

Cell Phones for Soldiers, Great Choice Chiropractic collection drive

As a United States Veteran, Dr. Greg Hauser knows the importance and the joy of being able to call home when deployed. More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers and Great Choice Chiropractic are calling on all Americans to support these brave men and women by donating unused cell phones. The cell phones are recycled for cash, and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for soldiers serving in the Middle East. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect more than 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

Phones may be donated at Great Choice Chiropractic, 15810 S. 45th St., Suite 160. Phones do not have to be in working order, and the drive is ongoing.

Groups help military families

Over the last five years, 1.6 million military service members have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. CAMP HOPE is a new fundraising campaign by Easter Seals and Epsilon Sigma Alpha International to provide camping opportunities for children of military families. A $600 contribution to CAMP HOPE will provide a week-long camping experience for these kids, allowing them to be kids again and also the opportunity to share their experiences with children of other service members. Any and all donations will provide services to support families learning to live with a service member facing newly acquired disabilities.

TShirts 4 Soldiers helps people connect

The Home Sweet Home Campaign’s new program, TShirts 4 Soldiers, is helping people connect with their deployed loved ones. This unique and fun way to send a piece of your heart and home to a service member you love is making a big splash in the military world. Spouses, children, mothers and more are designing one-of-a-kind T-shirts and having them shipped directly to their loved one. In turn, service members are sending T-shirts they have designed back home to their family and friends.

For every T-shirt sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to USA Cares Warrior Treatment Today Program, which seeks to remove the financial barrier that prohibits veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injuries from receiving the treatment they need.
