Prep classes under way for Mercury Hip Hop Squad auditions
The Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad is seeking highly energetic, experienced male and female dancers to be part of the 2010 season, which runs from May through August.
Auditions for the dance team will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at US Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson St. Finalists will advance to the second round of auditions on March 28 at Tempe Marketplace. Interested participants must be at least 18 years old and available for all Mercury 2010 home games.
Hip Hop Squad Coach Weezy is offering prep classes at US Airways Center prior to auditions for contenders interested in familiarizing themselves with the style and format of the tryouts. Junior Master Model Build Competition, movie premiere
LEGOLAND California is partnering with Arizona Science Center to introduce the newest adventurer in the LEGO Universe, “Clutch Powers.”
Creative guests are challenged to build their own LEGO city-themed model and compete in a Junior Master Model Builder Competition on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20 and 21, at the center, 600 E. Washington St. The competition will be judged in three age categories: 9 and younger, 10 to 15 and 16 and older. Guests are welcome to build anytime between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. with a winner from each category announced at 3 p.m. Feb. 21. Photographers, writers collaborate on project
Fifty two of metropolitan Phoenix’s most talented writers and photographers are collaborating on a project to promote downtown Phoenix. The endeavor, 26 Blocks, is an art project – a union of ideas, civic perspectives and artists – featuring 26 blocks of the downtown Phoenix area; each block photographed and written about in a way that captures the most intriguing aspects of the culture and/or history of each block.
The finished work will be displayed in After Hours Gallery at 116 W. McDowell Road in May.

‘Rock the Zoo’ tickets now available

This annual adults-only fundraiser promises plenty of music and merriment while raising money for the Zoo. Nationally-known alternative rock band Vertical Horizon will energize the crowd with live performances throughout the night. Phoenix’s Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park has, for the second time, earned a rare distinction from the American Association of Museums.
The honor from the association recognizes Pueblo Grande Museum’s success in achieving its mission and goals as well as using best practices and meeting or exceeding museum standards. The museum first earned accreditation in 1999.

Prominent curator of Latin American art to speak
Latin American Art Alliance, a support organization of Phoenix Art Museum, will present Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, vice president of Curatorial Affairs and chief curator at Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, Calif., who will discuss the challenges and rewards facing curators, artists and supporters of Latin American art. She will speak from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Whiteman Hall in Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Ave., as part of “The Americas Series 2010,” a series of events that explores the traditions as well as innovations in Latin American art.

Young Artists’ Competition seeks talented performers
Aspiring young performers between the ages of 16 and 20 are invited to enter the 11th Annual Arizona Young Artists’ Competition on Saturday, March 27, at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St.
From March 23 to 25, performers will compete in the categories of acting, modern dance and voice for a panel of industry professionals. At the conclusion of the preliminary process, four finalists from each category will be selected to compete in the final competition March 27. A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winner in each discipline. The audience will also have a chance to vote on a “People’s Choice” winner in each category. Tickets to the competition are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Kre8tive Kids hosting poetry writing contest
Kre8tive Kids’ 2010 Poetry Writing Contest is open to students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Entries will be divided into four grade divisions (K to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12).
The title and theme is “What Color is Love?” The theme relates to the fact that kids and adults should be open to accepting, respecting, embracing and even loving people of different racial and cultural backgrounds. This, however, does not mean that race and/or culture have to be written about as part of the poem … be Kre8tive.
Only one entry per person will be accepted. Entries must be submitted using the official Kre8tive Kids entry form and may not be more than 25 lines of text. At least one winner from each grade division will be selected, and each winner will receive a $100 value prize package.
Entries must be received by March 15, and winners will be determined by April 30.

Volunteers needed for Chandler Jazz Festival
The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership is looking for volunteers to help serve as greeters, tickets sellers and pourers at the Chandler Jazz Festival’s Beer & Wine Garden on March 26 and 27.
The Chandler Jazz Festival, now in its 11th year, will feature two days of free music in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park. Sidewalk bands will also play along the streets of Historic Downtown Chandler on Saturday afternoon. Last year’s festival attracted more than 15,000 people.
Volunteers are needed for shifts on Friday, March 26, from 3:45 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, March 27, from 3:20 p.m. to 10 p.m. Each shift is approximately two hours. Anyone who volunteers to be a pourer must have either completed a training class within the past year or be willing to attend a one-hour class which will be held in March.
All volunteers will receive a Chandler Jazz Festival T-shirt and a Downtown Dividends discount card. Proceeds from the Beer & Wine Garden benefit the Downtown Chandler Community Foundation.

ASU Art Museum Ceramics Gala

Mid-season auditions open for the Phoenix Boys Choir
Due to ongoing demand, the Phoenix Boys Choir is open for auditions mid-season for the first time in its history. Auditions are being scheduled for boys from seven to 14 years old for three levels of the Boys Choir – the Training (located in Tempe, Peoria, Scottsdale and Phoenix), Cadet and Town choirs. Boys will be a part of one of America’s largest and most prestigious choirs and will join 60 years of excellence, earn a sophisticated musical education, learn multi-cultural music and make lifetime friendships.

Tempe/Ahwatukee Young Life host Broadway-inspired variety show
The Tempe/Ahwatukee chapter of Young Life will host “Nite on Broadway” from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. The variety show will feature performances and appearances from local celebrities and artists.
