Simmons named as one of the Top 35 Entrepreneurs Under Age 35

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Christie Simmons was recently named one of Arizona’s Top 35 Entrepreneurs Under Age 35. This honor was the result of a five-judge panel’s decision after reviewing 175 applicants. Not only was Simmons honored as one of the Top 35 Women Entrepreneurs, but also as one of the Top 35 overall.

Simmons owns a dance fitness center in Tempe, Express MiE Fitness & Beauty, where she aims to make working out so much fun that women can’t help but to do it, and do it often. Simmons has turned her passion for helping people find fitness and confidence through dance into a booming business – open only since January 2009 but already having touched the lives of hundreds of women.

Express MiE offers dozens of dance fitness classes each week, plus various workshops and social events. The 5,500-square-foot women-only studio is located at 6448 S. McClintock Drive in Tempe (southwest corner at Guadalupe, behind Trader Joes). For information, call (480) 626-5973 or visit www.expressmie.com.

Ott wins national essay contest

Have you contemplated goals you would like to achieve and how saving money can help you succeed? Summit School of Ahwatukee student Kendall Ott expressed her ideas so well that she was one of six fifth-grade students nationally to be recognized in the Chase Bank essay contest.

“My goal is to own a high fashion apparel store,” Ott says in her essay. “It would take some elbow grease, willpower and last but not least, money. The only way I could achieve my goal is by saving.”

True to her belief in saving for the future, Ott invested her $2,500 winnings to help with college expenses.

Also a contest winner is Ott’s language arts teacher, Lori Christianson, who started the project in her classroom.

Studzinski, band heading to Chicago

Ahwatukee Foothills resident John Studzinski is director of the Willis Junior High School Jazz Band in Chandler, and the group is busy preparing for a performance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December. This music conference is the largest in the world and is attended by over 15,000 music educators and performers.

Willis is the only junior high jazz band to be selected for this prestigious event. The band will perform at 1 p.m. Dec. 16 and will feature renowned musicians Dean Sorenson on trombone and Michael Kocour on piano.

To help the ensemble prepare for this event, the band will host a “send off” concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at The Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. The concert is free and open to the public.

In addition, the band has been invited to perform at this year’s Arizona Music Educators Conference at the Mesa Marriott on Friday, Jan. 8.
