DBG Music in the Garden fall concert series
The Desert Botanical Garden will present its annual Music in the Garden Fall Concert Series 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evenings starting Oct. 2. All concerts are held outdoors on the Ullman Terrace at the Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.
Guests must be 21 and older to attend concerts. The cost is $14 for members and $20 for non-members - ticket price includes Garden admission.

Rimes, Leno appearing at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino

Monarch butterfly exhibit returns to the DBG
Mariposa Monarca, a monarch butterfly exhibit, has returned to the Desert Botanical Garden.
Guests may view these delicate creatures in the Marshall Butterfly Pavilion at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Nov. 15.

When In AZ!
The When In AZ! project is the largest locally-created music compilation the valley has ever seen, featuring more than 55 local musicians paying homage to the great scene happening in Arizona and to give back to the community.

DBG, Art Museum feature simultaneous exhibitions
Beginning Oct. 3, the Valley has two ways to enjoy and explore the beauty of botanical art. Phoenix Art Museum and the Desert Botanical Garden, in partnership with the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), will host two simultaneous exhibitions that capture the often overlooked beauty in the everyday plants all around us.
A Natural Perspective: An International Juried Exhibition of the American Society of Botanical Artists, on view at Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Ave., will display 40 botanical paintings by 35 ASBA artists, including the works of four Arizona artists.
Legacy: An ASBA Exhibition of the Diane Bouchier Founders Award for Excellence in Botanical Art Recipients, presented at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, includes 26 botanical paintings by 13 artists from New York to California, England and Scotland.
Both exhibitions are being held in conjunction with the 15th Annual ASBA Meeting and Conference to be held Oct. 15 to 18 at the Desert Botanical Garden. Both exhibitions will be on view through Jan. 3, 2010.

Top Valley chefs serve up favorite dishes in support of the arts
The 4th Annual Dine Out with the Chefs: A Celebration of the Culinary Arts event will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St.
The event offers guests the opportunity to mingle with more than 20 of the Valley’s top chefs and to sample their culinary creations, a seminar with internationally-known viticulturalist and consultant Jennifer Hashim-Buckey and a book signing by Pamela Swartz. Rakata will provide Latin-inspired music and there will be raffles and tastings of fine wines, beers and spirits.

Pop sensations Jonnie and Brookie giving benefit concert
Radio Disney’s “Next Big Thing” pop sensations Jonnie and Brookie will hold a benefit concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Mountain View Lutheran Church to help raise funds for the Music Ministry. The annual Chili Cook-Off will also be held.
Jonnie and Brookie are local girls who have made it big. Their music has a fun pop feel. Both play electric, acoustic and bass guitars while filling in with piano and drums. They have been performing across the country since they were 3 and 5 years old, and their mission is to be good role models for our youth and to show them that it’s cool to help others, have good character and to make a difference. TASTE Culinary Festival tickets on sale
Tickets are now available for the inaugural TASTE Chandler’s Culinary Festival 2009, taking place from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in Historic Downtown Chandler. The festival, presented by the HDE Agency and E Events & Entertainment, will give participants the opportunity to taste, savor and enjoy the delicacies of Chandler’s finest eating establishments.
TASTE will be held at AJ Chandler Park, between Arizona Avenue and Buffalo Street. The festival is expected to draw 35 restaurants and beverage purveyors, as well as 1,000 patrons.

Heard Museum continues Community Second Sundays
The Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., is offering free admission to Arizona residents on the second Sunday of most months, beginning in October. In addition, the Heard is partnering with local Valley non-profit organizations and charities to give back to the community. Visitors to the museum, whether free or paid admission, who bring an item will receive a coupon for 2-for-1 admission when they next visit.
This fall, the Heard is asking the public to aid three very special organizations:

ASU Día de los Muertos celebration
The 10th Annual Día de los Muertos Festival Exhibit will run Oct. 12 to Jan. 8 at the Arizona State University Museum of Anthropology, SHESC Building, on the Tempe campus. The gallery will be filled with traditional altars, cajitas (small traveling altars) and artwork celebrating this unique holiday and its 10th anniversary. Admission is free.
An opening reception will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29, in which Dr. Carmen King will present “Searching for Origins: Day of the Dead in Colonial Mexico” at 6 p.m., followed by music, food and a performance. The event is free and open to the public.

Duo to present “Shanks for the Memories”
Ahwatukee Foothills resident Bob Pasch and Lynn “Win” Roberts will present “Shanks for the Memories,” a golf tribute to Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Foothills Golf Club, 2201 E. Clubhouse Drive.
Pasch is known as the most outstanding bing Crosby Tribute Artist in the industry. He has won multiple awards and delighted audiences throughout the United States and Australia with his good, clean humor and remarkable likeness in sound, appearance and mannerisms of the great master, Bing Crosby.
Roberts is recognized as the most outstanding Bob Hope impersonator in the industry. He developed a variety show in 1964 and began to impersonate not only Hope but also Red Skelton, Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante. Grand Canyon State Games hosting annual art contest
The Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest promotes creativity through art as an effective method for artists across the nation to express their dreams and ideas for a successful life and a better community.
Draw, paint, decoupage, be innovative artistically as the challenge is on to use creativity and imaginations to put this year’s themes into art. Themes range from topics on Character Education, being Tobacco and Alcohol free, to the importance of taking care of your bodies in a healthy manner and the importance of practicing peace in your everyday life.
The contest is free, and entries will be judged on originality, theme interpretation and use of media. VYT auditioning for A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail and 13

Phoenix Children’s Chorus hosting auditions
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus will hold auditions for boys and girls, second through 8th grades, for the 2009-10 season. Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. Third St.
No prior choral training is required – applicants need only possess a clear, pleasant singing voice and the desire to learn. There is no fee to audition.
The choir has over 200 children in two training choirs and two touring choirs. This award winning chorus has performed throughout Europe and Russian and has taken top honors at the World Choral Olympics. The touring choirs will be traveling to China for a three-city tour in June 2010.

Amateur film-makers invited to enter contest
A new collaboration between the Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival and the New Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix has resulted in the creation of the Scholastic Film Contest.
The contest is open to all amateur scholastic film-makers in the United States. Film-makers do not have to be Jewish to enter the contest, but must fall into the following two grade levels for which one winner will be selected for each level – Level 1, high school students grades 9 to 12; and Level 2, undergraduate or graduate students at any college or university.
Submitted films must be no longer than 10 minutes and of obvious Jewish content or reflect issues related to any cultural, political historical, religious, geographical or any other aspects of Jewish life.

Indian Market continues to combine innovation with tradition
The 52nd Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, “Where Art Meets Entertainment,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6 and 7 at the Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave.
The world-acclaimed festival draws nearly 20,000 visitors and more than 700 of the nation’s most outstanding and successful American Indian artists.
The Fair is the perfect place for families wishing to enjoy a cultural and inexpensive weekend of music, entertainment and food. Festival goers can enjoy an array of American Indian music and dance performances in the museum’s outdoor amphitheater throughout the weekend. A variety of foods including American Indian favorites like fry bread, posole stew, piki bread and Hopi stew as well as Mexican and American fare tempt the tastebuds. There’s even gelato available to satisfy every sweet tooth.
This year’s Fair honors the clans, tribes and arts of the Apache peoples.
