DV junior varsity girls soccer finishes undefeated
The Desert Vista JV Girls soccer team finished the 2009-10 soccer season with a perfect 11-0 record. The Thunder outscored their opponents 58-1 this season, under the direction of head coach Leah Dompier and assistant coach Eryn Gryder. The program has posted a record of 30-2-1 over the past three seasons, scoring 140 goals while only giving up nine.
The team finished off their last opponent, Hamilton, in the last minute of play on Jan. 29. After a 0-0 halftime score, Hamilton took a 1-0 lead late in the second half – the first goal allowed by DV all season. DV’s Kari Kastelic scored the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining and then with one minute to go, Sarah Huntley knocked in the game-winner for the 2-1 final score.
Kastelic led the team in scoring on the season, while goalkeeper Mackenzie Meegan paced a stout Thunder defense all season.
“As student athletes this team sets the bar. Over half the team has a (grade point average) over 3.5 and many are involved in the honors program,” Dompier said. “Their hard work and dedication is evident in their outstanding results on the field and in the classroom.”
