DV STAND club hosting benefit concert
Desert Vista High School’s STAND club, a student led anti-genocide organization, which seeks to empower the school and community to join the fight to stop and prevent genocide worldwide, will host a benefit concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the school, 16440 S. 32nd St. The event will feature music from local bands and provide information on current genocidal conflicts and the importance of genocide prevention.
Club members raised over $6,000 last year for the cause and hopes to exceed that amount during the 2009-10 school year. Money is raised through many campus and community-wide fundraisers during the school year.
AF Montessori offering Wednesday tour
Ahwatukee Foothills Montessori, located at 3221 E. Chandler Blvd., will offer a tour at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. See a short video on Montessori and visit a classroom for a presentation of the school’s materials and program.

Reunion planned for DV’s 1st graduating class
The Desert Vista High School Class of 1999 will have its 10-year class reunion from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Rustler’s Rooste, 8383 S. 48th St. (on the Arizona Grand Hotel property - formerly The Pointe at South Mountain).
The reunion committee is offering two options for the evening – an appetizer option and a full dinner option. Appetizer tickets include an appetizer buffet, two drink tickets for the bar, dessert and entertainment. Dinner tickets include a full dinner, two drink tickets for the bar, dessert and entertainment. If purchased before Wednesday, Sept. 25, appetizer tickets are $45 each and dinner tickets are $65 each. After Sept. 25 and at the door, tickets will be $10 more (cash only if purchased at the door).

Schools observe International Walk to School Day
International Walk to School Day is an organized walk to school with the entire student body followed by an assembly to highlight safer and improved streets as well as healthier habits and cleaner air.
The following schools will observe the event: Kyrene Del Milenio Elementary School, Sept. 28; Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School, Sept. 29; and Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary School, Oct. 7.

DV make-up day information
Due to a cooling system malfunction at Desert Vista High School on Aug. 21, the day will be made up on Friday, Dec. 18. Final exams will be Dec. 17 and 18.
Dig Pink in Tukee coming in October
Get ready for a “Pink Out” on Thursday, Oct. 22, as the Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe girls volleyball teams participate in the Dig Pink in Tukee community volleyball match to support the fight against breast cancer. The event will take place in the Mountain Pointe High School gymnasium at 4201 E. Knox Road. The freshman game starts at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
The teams will make a donation to the Side-Out Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Breast Cancer Awareness and Education.

Harvest Festival Carnival at DV Oct. 30
Desert Vista High School will host its second Harvest Festival Carnival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the school’s courtyard at 16440 S. 32nd St. The family-friendly event, being held just before the Homecoming game, is open to the community and will include rides, games, food, live performances and a costume contest for those under eight.
Admission is two cans of food, and the Senior class will sell tickets for games and refreshments for 50 cents. Planned activities include buddy pictures, bounce houses, pie-in-the-face, fishing game, ping pong toss, cake walk, rock band and a dunk tank.
Enjoy an evening of theater at DV
The Desert Vista Theater Troupe will present a variety of performances in the school’s Black Box Theatre at 16440 S. 32nd St. The lineup includes Tartuffe Dec. 2 to 4, One Acts Jan. 20 to 22 and Children’s Hour March 10 to 12. My Fair Lady will run April 29 to May 1 in the Dr. Joe McDonald Auditorium.
Wednesday and Thursday performances will start at 7 p.m., and Friday performances will start at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Community invited to parent seminar at Summit School of Ahwatukee
Summit School of Ahwatukee is partnering with notMYkid to present a free parent information seminar on substance abuse in teenagers, how to recognize warning signs and what parents can do to protect their children. Ric Borom will lead the seminar from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the school, 4515 E. Muirwood Drive. Borom has worked extensively with teenagers and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with these issues.
notMYkid is a Phoenix-based nonprofit organization providing comprehensive preventions programs to educate teachers, parents and students about the risks of substance abuse, bullying, Internet safety, dating and depression.

Kyrene offers free immunization clinics
The Kyrene School District, in cooperation with Chandler Regional Medical Center, is offering free immunization clinics from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School, 11820 S. Warner-Elliot Loop.
Parents are required to accompany their children to the clinic and should provide shot records. Children ages six weeks to 18 years old are eligible to attend the clinic. Appointments are not necessary, and shots will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

SMCC teams with St. Mary’s for monthly discount food box distribution
South Mountain Community College employees and students are once again helping their neighbors by packing and selling discounted boxes of high-quality food for the St. Mary’s/Westside Food Bank Alliance throughout the 2009-10 school year.
Monthly sales events will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 2, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4 in front of the SMCC Performing Arts Center at 7050 S. 24th St.
This is not a government program or a handout, and anyone is welcome to purchase the food. St. Mary’s Food Bank purchases the food at a reduced price from area grocers and passes the savings along to consumers. There is no paperwork, and all purchases must be in cash.

SMCC offers G.E.D. high school equivalency testing
South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th St., is offering G.E.D. testing for individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 must bring a notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian, along with an official letter of withdrawal from their last school attended. The G.E.D. testing fee is $75, with a $15 re-test fee for each subject area. Testing is by appointment only, and pre-registration is required prior to testing. Pre-registration takes place on Monday afternoons between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Testing takes place on Wednesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tests are available in English, Spanish and large-print. Special accommodations are available for examinees with documented disabilities.

SMCC offers certified fiber optics networking classes
The South Mountain Community College Guadalupe Center will offer three industry-recognized and certified fiber optics networking classes during the week of Oct. 5 to 11.
The courses, presented in association with BDI DataLynk, will include the following: Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT), Oct. 5 to 7; Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T), Oct. 8 and 9; and Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist, Oct. 10 and 11. Each class session runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Artist, author to address CGCC students, community members
Artist and author Dylan Scholinski will address students and community members at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Performing Arts Center at 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler.
Scholinski’s art exhibit, Sent(a)Mental Project: A Memorial to GLBTIQA Suicide, will be on display in the CGCC Library Gallery beginning Oct. 6. The exhibit is a collection of creative works – about, by, or for individuals or groups affected by suicide. The project also includes a section for survivor stories. A reception with Scholinski will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the CGCC Library Gallery.
Born Daphne Scholinski, as a young girl growing up in the Chicago suburbs, she played first base in Little League and preferred drawing to playing with dolls. When she was 15, she was locked up in a mental hospital, diagnosed as “an inappropriate female,” and spent the rest of her high school years undergoing extreme femininity training. After transitioning and living as a man, 37-year-old Dylan Scholinski is a distinguished artist, author (The Last Time I Wore a Dress: A Memoir), and public speaker. His work not only portrays the anguish of his hospital years but also his ultimate triumph.

Third-grade art requested for 2010 Valley Metro calendar
The fifth annual Cool Bus STUFF contest kicks off with an invitation to all Valley third-graders that love to draw. With the theme, Valley Metro: Go Smart. Go Transit., Valley youth are encouraged to demonstrate their artistic ability by showing how transit can be fun, safe and help the Earth!
Winners will be featured in the Valley Metro Transit Education 2010 calendar and receive fun prizes.

Kennedy to emcee Seton After Dark
Terry Kennedy of Catholic Athletes for Christ will emcee Seton Catholic Preparatory High School’s Seton After Dark Annual Dinner Auction Nov. 21.
Kennedy is a former All-Star Major League Baseball catcher who played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1978-80), San Diego Padres (1981-86), Baltimore Orioles (1987-88) and San Francisco Giants (1989-91). He is the son of former Major League player and manager Bob Kennedy.
This year’s Honorary Chairpersons are Dwayne and Carol Dobson.
