Sam’s Club gives 10 local teachers $100 for supplies
Sam’s Club is helping 10 teachers from Centennial Middle School purchase much-needed classroom supplies through its new Teacher Rewards program.
Selected randomly by the school’s new principal, Ev Michell, each teacher was presented with a $100 Teacher Reward Card at an award presentation at the school on Sept. 23. The winning teachers were Laura Steffen, Mark Lemieux, Beth Noreiga, Ashley Schutkowski, Heidi Burgess, Shelly Benezra, John Pitner, Lynsey Kennedy, Deanna Schreckler and Kristin Vega.
Nationally, the Teacher Rewards program will enable Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club to provide more than $4 million to 40,000 deserving teachers across the United States.

AF’s Pangrazio attends reception
Lynn Houston, president of the board of the Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL), and Ahwatukee Foothills resident Phil Pangrazio, executive director of ABIL, attended a reception honoring the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL). Members of NCIL’s governing board traveled from all over the United States to hold their September board meeting at the Disability Empowerment Center in Phoenix, of which ABIL is a tenant. Pangrazio serves as the treasurer of the national organization.
Horizon has 3 National Merit Semi-Finalists
Horizon Honors High School students Robert Baker, Kaitlyn Hofmann and Kelly Stinnett have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists this year.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test – a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year – and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
Of all the entrants, some 50,000 with the highest scores qualify for recognition in the program.
To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the materials provided to each semifinalist.
