Donated coins support DV Grad Night

Mid First Bank will have its coin machine at the Desert Vista High School vs. Brophy men’s basketball game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at DV, 16440 S. 32nd St. Mid First Bank will match coin for coin (up to $1,000) every coin donated that evening and give all the money to DV Grad Night, potentially raising $2,000.

Grad Night offers a safe, fun, alcohol and drug-free environment after graduation.

 

DVHS Orchestra, Guitar Ensembles present Mid Winter Concert

Desert Vista High School’s Orchestra and Guitar Ensembles will present the Mid Winter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the auditorium, 16440 S. 32nd St.

Admission is $5, $3 for middle school students with ID. Children 7 and under are admitted free. Ticket sales begin at 6:30 p.m.

Upromise awarding $250K in scholarships

Upromise by Sallie Mae is now accepting applications for this year’s scholarship program, which will award $2,500 to 100 accomplished college-bound students for the 2010-11 academic year. SMCC presents ‘Black Women Walking’

In celebration of Black History Month, South Mountain Community College, the SMCC Black Student Union and Seek First Entertainment will present Black Women Walking, a one-act play spotlighting the achievements of 11 notable African-American women, Feb. 11 to 13.

A school-day performance intended for elementary-age students begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 and evening performances will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 and 13 in the SMCC Performance Hall at 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Road.

General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $5 for seniors age 55 and older.

Preschool registration kick-off pajama party

Temple Emanuel Preschool, 5801 S. Rural Road, will host a preschool registration kick-off pajama party at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, for children 12 months to 6 years of age and their families. Parents will learn about the preschool and its offerings and have the opportunity to meet the preschool director, teachers, students and families. The fall preschool and summer registration period begins Feb. 1. “Breakfast for dinner” will be served, followed by a Tots’N’Torah family-friendly Shabbat service.

High School summer internship opportunity at ASU’s Biodesign Institute

Encourage students who will be seniors in the 2010-11 academic year to apply for a summer internship at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University. Interns are expected to volunteer a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week June 7 to July 19 and will receive a monetary stipend for travel expenses. Monte Vista Spring Carnival goes Hawaiian

Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School will host its annual Spring Carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the school, 15221 S. Ray Road.

This year’s theme is “Hawaiian Luau,” and the carnival will feature games, blow-up rides, food, entertainment and raffles for prizes.

CGCC, Soles4Souls partner to collect shoes for those in need

This spring, Chandler-Gilbert Community College is partnering with Sole4Souls, a non-profit organization that collects and distributes shoes to vulnerable populations.  Soles4Souls is currently helping in Haiti with the earthquake response and has coordinated relief efforts for the Asian Tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. 

Through March 12, students and community members may drop off new and gently used shoes in receptacles in the Library and Student Center Pavilion at CGCC, 2626 E. Pecos Road, Chandler.

CGCC will host three special collection days this semester in coordination with college SEE Your World events.

“Clean Out Your Closet” Day will be Thursday, Feb. 18, along with the CGCC Dumpster Dive, in which students inventory Pecos campus garbage to raise awareness and promote reducing materials headed for landfills. Inventory your closet, then bring in shoes you don’t use or need.

“Free Your Feet” Day will be Tuesday, March 2, in conjunction with “Liberation Theology,” a presentation by philosophy and religious studies professor Dr. David Alberto Muñoz at 4:30 p.m. in room SC140-144. Bring shoes to campus, donate them and go barefoot all day.

“Make a Mountain” Day will be Tuesday, March 9. Students and community members will help create a mountain of shoes. Those who attend Dr. David Walton’s keynote presentation on the novel Mountains Beyond Mountains from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center will be invited to bring a pair of shoes to contribute to the mountain.

Primrose hosting family dance-off

In partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, Primrose Schools are hosting a nationwide family dance-off competition and parents are invited to submit 30-second home videos of their family’s best dance moves. The winning family will receive the grand prize of $5,000 and a $30,000 donation to their local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. The two runners-up will receive a Wii Fit Bundle and each weekly finalist will be awarded a Flip Video Camcorder.

Contestants may upload videos through March 19. Weekly finalists will be featured on www.FamilyDanceOff.com March 22 to 26, and visitors will be able to vote for their favorite. The winners will be announced March 31.

 

CGCC hosts ‘THEM: Images of Separation’ exhibit

Throughout the month of February the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Library Gallery will host THEM: Images of Separation, a traveling exhibition that showcases items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups.

DV marching band selected for 2011 Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship

The Desert Vista High School marching band has accepted an invitation to participate in next year’s Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship. The top two finishers in this year’s 2009 Arizona State Marching Band Championship were invited to the national championship for the 2010-11 school year. Desert Vista placed second in this year’s state competition with a score of 83.5. All members who join the 2010-11 marching band will attend the competition on Dec. 30, 2010. 

The band is currently looking for sponsors to support their extended season to participate in nationals.

$18.85 million gift to transform teacher education at ASU

In a groundbreaking move, Arizona State University has joined forces with Teach For America (TFA) to address the most pressing educational needs of our time. Through this partnership, ASU will adapt TFA’s most successful tools in order to attract, prepare, support and retain more highly-effective teachers.

Teach For America has recruited, trained and placed more than 24,000 teachers since 1990, becoming one of the nation’s largest providers of teachers for low-income communities. In that time, the organization has developed strategies that have enabled it to attract people into teaching who otherwise may not have chosen the profession and created innovative support systems to help those teachers in the classroom, building a pipeline of leaders grounded in educational equity and excellence.

Teach For America is widely known as a non-traditional route to teaching, and most of its recruits are not graduates of schools of education. But now with a five-year, $18.85-million investment from entrepreneur and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, ASU will partner with Teach For America to bring major substantive changes to the way ASU recruits, selects and prepares future K to 12 teachers.

This program, known as the Sanford Education Project, is one of many ASU initiatives to improve public education.

 

MPHS offering Summer Mathematics Academy

Mountain Pointe High School will host its inaugural Summer Mathematics Academy starting June 1 for students in fourth through eighth grade looking to advance their math skills.

The academy will offer sixth-grade math, seventh-grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Honors Geometry for middle/high school credit. Students will be issued textbooks and given direct instruction by highly-qualified math teachers and should bring a spiral notebook, pencils and folder.

Classes will meet 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday June 1 to July 9 (no classes July 5) at the school, 4201 E. Knox Road. The cost is $270.

SMCC Storytelling Institute features Folktales for Grownups

The South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute is hosting its annual “Folktales for Grownups” series, featuring ensemble performances that spotlight time-honored folktales from cultures around the world.

Upcoming performances will feature tales of “Noodleheads, Fools and Tricksters” on March 3 and “Earthcare” on April 21. Performances start at 6:30 p.m. in the SMCC Studio Theatre at 7050 S. 24th St. In courtesy to the storytellers, no one will be seated once the storytelling has begun. Admission is free.

SMCC earns continued accreditation

As it celebrates 30 years of helping students to achieve their educational goals, South Mountain Community College has received formal notice from the Higher Learning Commission that it has been granted continued accreditation as an institution of higher education. Official notice was received by the college in a letter issued by the commission on Dec. 16, 2009.

Since the fall of 2006, college faculty and staff have been laying the groundwork for SMCC’s successful re-accreditation. Key to this effort was a two-year self-study, through which the college reviewed and assessed its performance and achievements.

60-day review of TransMath runs until Feb. 22

The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review for TransMath, a resource to support the mathematics curriculum in middle school for students with identified disabilities placed in resource pull-out classes. Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review resources and provide feedback. 

All feedback will be reviewed by the Exceptional Student Services Department and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process.

The materials consist of three levels: Level 1, Developing Number Sense; Level 2, Making Sense of Rational Numbers; and Level 3, Understanding Algebraic Expressions. Each title contains a teacher guide, student text, interactive text (workbook) and student assessments. Teachers also have access to the mbook, an online teacher guide.

Ahwatukee Foothills Prep sets auditions for AFP Idol

Ahwatukee Foothills Prep, 10210 S. 50th Place, will hold auditions for the third annual 2010 Ahwatukee Foothills Prep Idol at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 23.

The AFP Idol was created in 2008 by the school’s music teacher, Chris Steward, because many of the school’s students love to sing and follow the popular reality show, American Idol. Over the past two years the show has had several sponsors, which enable the school to continue to have the competition. This year some of the same sponsors are on board and more are expected to support the show.

This year’s judges will include representatives from talent agencies, music educators and others from the Phoenix metro area. The judges will hand out golden tickets to those who pass the audition. Those students will rehearse their songs once a week (some will be cut), leading up to the finals at 6 p.m. May 26, when approximately 18 to 20 students will compete.

Seton receives major grant from GRIC

Seton Catholic Preparatory High School has been awarded a $250,000 grant by the Gila River Indian Community that will be used to help fund completion of the new classroom building scheduled to begin construction in early 2010.

On an annual basis, through the State Shared Revenue Program, the Gila River Indian Community awards 12 percent of its gaming revenues directly to cities, towns and counties for services that benefit the general public.

High School Foundation selling Suns tickets

The Tempe Union High School Education Foundation benefits many students throughout its seven schools in the form of scholarships, teacher enrichment and providing learning opportunities that would not normally occur.

The Foundation is currently selling Phoenix Suns tickets for the Philadelphia game on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., giving community members an opportunity to enjoy the game and at the same time make some money for our kids.

Tickets are $25 each, and the Foundation makes $10 for each ticket sold.

For each ticket purchased, the person will receive a free raffle ticket for the chance to win an autographed picture of Leandro Barbosa and a limited edition money ball from the 2009 All-star game, as well as a gift from the Phoenix Suns at the game. Details will be provided when tickets are purchased.

Classroom building groundbreaking ceremony at Seton

The Most Reverend Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted will preside over the groundbreaking ceremony for the new classroom building at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26. The ceremony will include a special blessing for the construction as well as presentations from special guests.

The new three-story, 55,000-square-foot classroom building will be built to the west of the chapel at 1150 N. Dobson Road in Chandler and provide a much needed new fine arts level, a black box theater with seating for 400 and 16 additional classrooms. When completed, enrollment will be able to increase to 700 students. Construction of the shell of the building will begin in early 2010 with interior completion to follow.

Cronkite New Media Academy teaches digital media skills

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication has opened registration for its third Cronkite New Media Academy, offering 10 sessions to develop multimedia Web skills.

The program, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over 10 Saturdays from March 13 through May 22, is designed for people who want to learn how to set up and develop a Web site for personal or professional use. It is taught by Cronkite professors and staff in the school’s state-of-the-art building on the downtown campus of Arizona State University (555 N. Central Ave.).

CGCC offers engineering degree

Created in partnership between Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Glendale Community College, the Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology degree will enable students to enter the workforce as an entry-level Engineering Aid upon graduation from the two-year program. The program is also consistent with the first two years of engineering courses at regional colleges and universities, allowing students to transfer most course credits towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

CGCC and GCC worked with local industry, including Honeywell, Avnet, AeroSpec, SRP, ATL Incorporated, Medtronic and Sundt Construction to create a degree program that meets the current employment needs of the engineering industry.

SMCC offers GED high school equivalency testing

South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th St., is offering GED testing for individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking to earn a high school equivalency diploma.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 must bring a notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian, along with an official letter of withdrawal from their last school attended. The GED testing fee is $75, with a $15 re-test fee for each subject area. Testing is by appointment only, and pre-registration is required prior to testing. Pre-registration takes place on Monday afternoons between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Testing takes place on Wednesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tests are available in English, Spanish and large-print. Special accommodations are available for examinees with documented disabilities.

60-day review of Kyrene health materials runs until March 26

The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review of lessons and resources to support Strand 8 (Growth & Development) and Strand 9 (HIV/AIDS & STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) of the Kyrene Expanded Health Curriculum.

Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review the lessons and resources in addition to the “Guidelines for Presenters” document and provide feedback. All feedback will be reviewed by the Health Steering Committee and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process. 

The materials will be available for public review through March 26 at the Kyrene District Office, 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe. Office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
