Phoenix Parks and Rec offering full-day summer programs
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is offering full-day recreation programs at 12 locations this summer to help keep kids active, engaged and safe over the break. Community centers also are offering a full schedule of general-interest classes and programs for people of all ages to get active, learn new skills and have fun.
Exact prices, dates, times and other details in the full-day recreation programs vary from center to center; however, most are for kids ages 6 to 12 and run from early June through July. Prices range from $280 to $350 for the seven to eight weeks. Some centers offer shorter duration program options at a reduced price. Many centers also are offering programs for teens.

Parents’ Night Out
Childtime Learning Center at 5050 E. Warner Road will host a Parents’ Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 30. Children will enjoy activities with friends new and old in the care of trusted caregivers.
The cost is $20 for the first child or $35 for families and includes dinner.

Hospitality Day and Swap Meet
The shooting and non-shooting public is invited to a free, educational hands-on day exploring the many shooting activities available at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club, 3960 N. Usery Pass Road, Mesa. Activities will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24.
Club members who have become national and world champions will demonstrate various shooting techniques, and community organizations will also put on demonstrations. There will be a chance to buy, sell or swap excess stuff.

Hot dog eating contest
The community is invited to watch amateurs and major league eaters compete as Arizona Mills hosts the state’s “Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest Qualifier” starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5 in the food court at the Tempe mall, 5000 S. Arizona Mills Circle.
The winner will earn the title of Arizona Hot Dog Eating Champion and have the chance to compete in Coney Island, N.Y., at the ESPN-televised annual “Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.”
Registration to participate has been closed due to the high number of entries, but the public is invited to watch for free.

‘Largest Baby Shower on the Planet’
The national charity Newborns In Need (NIN) has organized the “Largest Baby Shower on the Planet,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at Esperanza Lutheran Church, 2601 Thunderhill Place.
Items may be made or purchased and are given to medical centers and hospitals in the Valley, where the medical staff gives these items to the families in need.
NIN meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the third Friday of every month at Esperanza Church (except May because of the shower).

Local letter carriers and United Way fight hunger with food drive
On Saturday, May 8, the largest one-day food drive will reach the Valley when more than 5,000 local city and rural letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations across local neighborhoods. Valley of the Sun United Way urges Valley residents to help fight hunger by donating to the 18th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. The annual drive provides vital resources to our Valley’s major food banks – St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, St. Vincent de Paul and the United Food Bank. Last year, local letter carriers collected more than 795,000 pounds to help meet community needs.
Here’s how to help: city and rural letter carriers will deliver grocery bags to residents’ mailboxes; then residents are asked to fill the bag with non-perishable food items and simply place the bag next to their mailbox (a full bag weighing 12 pounds can provide approximately eight meals to someone in need). Letter carriers will pick up donations while on their regular route, and all donations will be delivered to local food banks.
Residents may also donate online at www.stampouthungeraz.org. According to the Arizona Association of Food Banks, a $10 donation can feed a family of four for three days. Financial donations enable food banks to leverage resources and purchase food in larger quantities at discounted prices – resulting in more meals for individuals in need.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce is inviting community members to make donations of $5 or more to help keep the Red, White and Boom fireworks show in Ahwatukee.

Registration opens May 8 for city aquatics programs
Registration for the following city of Phoenix summer aquatics programs begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8. Early registration is recommended (online or walk-in) as spaces are limited.
• Registration for all swim classes and programs begins May 8 and will continue throughout the summer or until classes fill to maximum capacity.
• The Cub Club program is available at all city pools and is free for children ages seven to nine years. This fun and exciting program, sponsored by Cigna Healthcare of Arizona, gives children the opportunity to learn skills such as assisting in a water emergency, use of personal floatation devices, when to call 9-1-1 and basic swimming instruction, all from a certified lifeguard. The participants will meet twice a week for five weeks beginning in early June. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Cub Club Olympics on Saturday, July 17, hosted by Perry Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills.
• Children ages 10 to 12 will discover the fun of boating safety in the Discovery Guards program, free and available at all city pools. Discovery Guards develop basic First Aid and Water Safety skills, including boating safety and Personal Floatation Device training taught by a qualified lifeguard. The participants will meet twice a week for five weeks beginning in early June. Upon completion, Discovery Guards will receive a T-shirt and gym bag. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Discovery Guard Olympics on July 17, hosted by Perry Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills.
• The Junior Lifeguards program is free to youths 13 to 15 years old at select pools. Gain insight into the skills needed to be a Lifeguard from a certified lifeguard. Participants will learn water safety skills, be exposed to lifeguard training techniques, leadership, responsibility, first aid, pool operations and CPR/AED for the professional lifeguard. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a discount to a city of Phoenix lifeguard training class and be much better prepared for lifeguarding. Join all the participants at the conclusion of the program for the Junior Lifeguard Olympics on Saturday July 24, hosted by El Prado Pool, where athletes will show off their newly acquired skills. You will register onto a waitlist and pool staff will contact you for an interview. All participants will be chosen through an interview process. Interviews will begin the first week of June.

Hot weather supplies needed for homeless
Southwest Behavioral Health Service’s Homeless Outreach, a non-profit program to help homeless individuals with mental illness, is requesting donations of hot weather supplies.
The Homeless Outreach program is not a traditional shelter or food bank but a mobile program that delivers supplies to the homeless where they live – on the streets, in alleyways, riverbeds, parks and near deserted buildings. The program covers all of Maricopa County. With homeless populations growing to record levels, the need for donations is greater than ever.
Items that are requested include water, sunscreen, hats or caps, lip balm, hygiene kits (including toothpaste and toothbrushes), lightweight T-shirts, shoes, socks, underwear and monetary donations.
Supply donations may be dropped off 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the front office of Southwest Behavioral Health, 3450 N. Keller Williams hosting food drive
Keller Williams Realty around the country will be closed May 13 to give back and serve each of their communities.
In Ahwatukee Foothills, Keller Williams Realty Sonoran Living will host a “Fill a Box – Feed a Family” food drive to collect food from the community and local businesses. The goal is to give 100 food boxes to local schools, churches and the community for families in need.
Look for Keller Williams agents in red shirts on May 13 at local supermarkets, the YMCA and other locations for food drop offs.

Silent Sundays at South Mountain Park
Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots get to call the roads of South Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department continues its popular Silent Sunday at South Mountain on the fourth Sunday monthly. Starting at 5 a.m. the park’s roadways past the Central Avenue gate, 10919 S. Central Ave., will be reserved for non-motorized use.
Remaining Silent Sunday dates for 2010 are May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28 and Dec. 26.

Bull riding at Rawhide

Food distributor launches food drive benefiting Ariz. residents
The Treasure Box, an economical meal program developed by San Diego-based Good Source Solutions, provides quality, nutritious food for everyone trying to stretch their food dollars. Treasure Box can feed a family of four for almost a week or an individual for nearly one month!

Support domestic abuse awareness, recovery
Sunsational Cruises and Bravery Project are partnering to offer a journey of recovery. An escape to sea supporting domestic abuse awareness sets sail June 6 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The 2010 Bravery Project Cruise is a seven-night cruise to the eastern Caribbean with rates beginning at $979 per person for double occupancy. For each confirmed booking made through Polly Waln at Sunsational Cruises, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support Bravery Project.

Woodworkers looking for projects
The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.
Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.
The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.

YMCA’s OPAS program
Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.
