Cerritos students wiping out germs

The Kyrene de los Cerritos Elementary School Library is sponsoring a campaign to collect disinfectant wipes to help “wipe out germs” on its library books. When books are returned to the library, the outsides are cleaned with disinfectant wipes in order to cut down on the spread of germs.

Library staff members are building a pyramid of donated wipe containers in the hallway, and the students are quite involved and very excited to see the pyramid growing.


DV Hockey hosting annual golf classic

The Desert Vista High School Hockey Club’s fifth annual charity golf classic will be held Nov. 8 at the Foothills Golf Club, 2201 E. Clubhouse Drive. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start, four-person scramble format. The cost is $85 per player or $300 for a team, and sponsorships are also available.

Community members are invited for a fun-filled day of golf followed by a buffet, prizes, awards, raffle and silent auction.

Eagle Day registration under way at HCLC

Registration has begun for Eagle Day, a fundraiser for Horizon Community Learning Center, taking place Nov. 21 at The Foothills Country Club. Eagle Day includes a silent auction, dinner, dancing and an optional golf package. Proceeds will be used to increase technology in all HCLC classrooms.

Colina to host book fair

Celebrate books and find great reads for every person in your family at the A+ Book Fair running through Oct. 30 at Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School, 13612 S. 36th St. Fair hours are 7:15 to 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the school’s library. Many award-winning titles will be available at affordable prices.

Students will also collect loose change during the fair to purchase books for the Child Crisis Center in Mesa.

ASU gears up for Homecoming events

Gov. Jan Brewer will be the grand marshal for the Homecoming Parade at Arizona State University in Tempe on Oct. 31. A giant block party begins at 9 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. on University Drive.

The parade starts at Myrtle Avenue and moves east to McAllister, with Sparky and the Sun Devil Marching Band joining dozens of gala floats and entries from student clubs and organizations.

The block party is just south of the University Club on Tyler Mall, winding north over the Alumni Lawn and across the street into the Palo Verde residence hall area. University Drive will be blocked off from 9 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., when the party ends.

Kick-off for the football game between the ASU Sun Devils and the California Golden Bears will be at 12:30 p.m. in Sun Devil Stadium.

This year’s block party features more than 30 tents with activities and treats for children, plus demonstrations and exhibits for everyone. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to trick-or-treat.

Children and their parents can get an enjoyable introduction to the exciting research at the Biodesign Institute, with activities that include making necklaces from strawberry DNA and creating nylon polymers in a safe and slimy-fun experiment. ASU Libraries will have a guest appearance by the “Ask a Librarian” chicken, and an assortment of historical ASU yearbooks for the older crowd.

ASU Native American alumni will have cultural performances, student art, crafts for children, games, and tacos and fry bread for sale. ASU Athletics will offer inflatable bouncy games in the Kidz Zone, and Eight/KAET will feature “Masters of Disaster.”

Oct. 28 – Locks of Love and Goin’ Bald for Bucks, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on north side of Memorial Union, a service project to raise funds for Roswell Park Cancer Institute by shaving students’ heads. Student groups will perform onstage.

Oct. 28 – 2-for-1 Concert and Comedy performances, doors 5:30 p.m., show 6:30 p.m. at Tempe Beach Park, with music by “Gym Class Heroes” and comedy by Craig Robinson and the Nasty Delicious, presented by the ASU Programming and Activities Board. Advance tickets $15 with student ID and $22 for public, available at ASU Bookstore; $5 extra at the gate.

Oct. 29 – Phantom of the Opera, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Gammage Auditorium, discounts on tickets to the musical for students and alumni at http://homecoming.asu.edu/Phantom.

Oct. 30 – Lantern Walk, 8 p.m., “A” Mountain, climb to the top of the mountain in one of ASU’s longest standing traditions that dates back to 1917. Gather at 5th Street and College to carry lanterns to the summit, enjoying music and fireworks.

Oct. 31 – Block Party, 9 a.m., from Old Main’s alumni lawn north to Palo Verde Main, featuring 30 tents with demonstrations, exhibits and activities, plus a Challenges Mall.

Oct. 31 – Homecoming Parade, 10 a.m., University Drive from Myrtle to McAllister Avenues.

Oct. 31 – Football game, 12:30 p.m., Sun Devil Stadium, ASU Sun Devils vs. California Golden Bears, ticket charge.




HCLC students read thousands of minutes during summer

Horizon Community Learning Center students in grades K-6 participated in Scholastic’s “Read for the World Record” summer reading program, logging 403,089 minutes from May 1 to Aug. 1. Schools from all over the world participated in the program and helped to set the record for summer reading. The top 20 schools that read the most minutes, including HCLC, will be featured in the 2010 Scholastic Book of World Records. Inclusive Education

Andrea O’Brien will present the first SEPACK (Special Education Parents Advisory Council of Kyrene) Parent Training session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at St. Benedict Church, 16223 S. 48th St. The topic is “Inclusive Education: Why? What? And How?”

O’Brien is an educational consultant who specializes in inclusive education. She provides consultative services to districts and parents related to the education of students with disabilities. She has provided teacher in-services on inclusive practices throughout Arizona. She is part of the AZWINS (with Inclusive schools) Leadership Team and an Advisory Member for the AZWINS Training Series. She is an AZTASH Board Member.


SMCC offers new health care career training programs

South Mountain Community College, in partnership with Boston Reed College, is now offering courses to train individuals to become pharmacy technicians and clinical medical assistants.

Harvest Festival Carnival at DV Oct. 30

Desert Vista High School will host its annual Harvest Festival Carnival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the school’s courtyard at 16440 S. 32nd St. The family-friendly event, being held just before the Homecoming game, is open to the community and will include rides, games, food, live performances and a costume contest for those under eight.

Admission is two cans of food, and the Senior class will sell tickets for games and refreshments for 50 cents. Planned activities include buddy pictures, bounce houses, pie-in-the-face, fishing game, ping pong toss, cake walk, rock band and a dunk tank.


Middle-schoolers needed to create green spaces for Future City Competition

Arizona’s middle-schoolers are preparing to take part in National Engineers Week Foundation’s 2009-10 Future City Competition. Now entering its 18th year, Future City Competition invites seventh- and eighth-graders nationwide to create the cities of tomorrow and encourages interest in science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on applications.

Themed “Providing An Affordable Living Space For People Who Have Lost Their Home Due to a Disaster or Financial Emergency,” this year’s Future City Competition will attract more than 33,000 students from 1,100 middle schools across the country.

Participating students are asked to design a model of their city using SimCity 4 Deluxe software, provided by Electronic Arts, and then build a physical model of the city using recycled materials. They will also write a research essay describing their design and a second narrative outlining the key features of their city.

The Arizona regional competition gets under way in the fall and culminates with the regional finals at University Public School (formerly Phoenix Preparatory Academy) in Phoenix on Jan. 23. One winning team from Arizona will qualify for a trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C., which take place during Engineer’s Week, Feb. 15 to 17, 2010. The National Finals Grand Prize winners receive a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., provided by National Finals host Bentley Systems, Inc. The second and third prize winners receive $5,000 and $2,000 scholarships for their schools’ technology programs.

The registration deadline for schools nationwide is Oct. 31. Future City is also looking for professional engineers who may be interested in serving as mentors.

 Kyrene offers free immunization clinics

The Kyrene School District, in cooperation with Chandler Regional Medical Center, is offering free immunization clinics from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School, 11820 S. Warner-Elliot Loop.

Parents are required to accompany their children to the clinic and should provide shot records. Children ages six weeks to 18 years old are eligible to attend the clinic. Appointments are not necessary, and shots will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

ASU invites schoolchildren to enter creative contest

Arizona State University invites schoolchildren from all over the state to enter its 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay-poster contest. Winners will receive savings bonds and have their entries displayed at ASU. They also will be honored at ASU’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration breakfast in January, along with their parents, teachers and school principals. Entries must be postmarked by Nov. 4.

Students are asked to create their entries around the theme, “Beyond the Dream: Building Communities Through Servant Leadership,” focusing on a member of their family, school or community who demonstrates leadership through service.

 SMCC teams with St. Mary’s for monthly discount food box distribution

South Mountain Community College employees and students are once again helping their neighbors by packing and selling discounted boxes of high-quality food for the St. Mary’s/Westside Food Bank Alliance throughout the 2009-10 school year.  

Monthly sales events will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 6 and Dec. 4 in front of the SMCC Performing Arts Center at 7050 S. 24th St.

This is not a government program or a handout, and anyone is welcome to purchase the food. St. Mary’s Food Bank purchases the food at a reduced price from area grocers and passes the savings along to consumers. There is no paperwork, and all purchases must be in cash.

Goodwill’s charter high school receives $206K grant

ecademie Charter High School, which runs under the auspices of Goodwill of Central Arizona, received a $206,000 grant from the Improving Literacy through School Libraries (LSL) program run through the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to establish a library for students.

As part of Goodwill’s commitment to the education and vocational advancement of Arizonans, ecademie helps at-risk youth overcome their personal barriers and earn a high school diploma so they have a foundation of success transitioning into the work world.


The LSL program aims to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing increased access to up-to-date library materials, a well-equipped, technologically advanced school library media center and well-trained, professionally certified school library media specialists.

An open house for ecademie’s new library is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at 417 N. 16th St. Students, parents and the public are invited to attend.

The Desert Vista Theater Troupe will present a variety of performances in the school’s Black Box Theatre at 16440 S. 32nd St. The lineup includes Tartuffe Dec. 2 to 4, One Acts Jan. 20 to 22 and Children’s Hour March 10 to 12. SMCC offers GED high school equivalency testing

South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th St., is offering GED testing for individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking to earn a high school equivalency diploma.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 must bring a notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian, along with an official letter of withdrawal from their last school attended. The GED testing fee is $75, with a $15 re-test fee for each subject area. Testing is by appointment only, and pre-registration is required prior to testing. Pre-registration takes place on Monday afternoons between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Testing takes place on Wednesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tests are available in English, Spanish and large-print. Special accommodations are available for examinees with documented disabilities.
