Robertin in cast of Beauty IS a Beast

Burns-It-Up, a nonprofit organization in Chandler, will present its first production, Beauty IS a Beast, at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 and 27 at Hope Covenant Church, 1770 S. Dobson Road, Chandler.

The cast consists of children ages 6 to 16 from across the East Valley, including Ahwatukee Foothills resident Zachary Robertin.

Beauty might be beautiful on the outside, but she’s ugly on the inside – see what happens when her fairy godmother turns her inside out! Based on Shakespeare’s comedy, Taming of the Shrew, child actors bring this classic tale to life in a contemporary re-telling.

Tickets, $8 general admission and $5 for children age 5 and under, are available at info@burnsitup.com or by calling (480) 332-7914. Proceeds will benefit relief efforts in Haiti and support the Chandler theater group.

For more information, visit www.burnsitup.com.

Meuth graduates from Missouri S&T

Ryan James Meuth of Ahwatukee Foothills was one of approximately 600 candidates to receive a degree from Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, during commencement ceremonies Dec. 19. He received a master’s degree in computer engineering.

Center Pointe Dance supports book drive

In a continuing effort to give back to the community, Center Pointe Dance is currently supporting the Kiwanis Club Annual Book Drive. Community members are invited to drop off new or gently-used children’s books at Center Pointe Dance, 12020 S. Warner-Elliot Loop (at Equestrian Trail) through March 15. The book drive will provide books to underprivileged schools and homeless shelters in and around our community.

Other community service projects Center Pointe Dance has participated in this school year include a Back to School Supply Drive (sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee), a Diaper Drive to support the Phoenix Children’s Project and the Holly Day Benefit Show in December.

The Holly Day Benefit Show took place at Desert Vista High School and raised funds for two local charities. Bianca Caryl, owner and director of Center Pointe Dance, delivered checks for $1,200 each to Hospice of the Valley and the American Cancer Society from the proceeds in honor of her father, Thomas Parrish, a longtime Ahwatukee Foothills resident.

Pilcher named to Dean’s List

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Darren J. Pilcher achieved academic distinction during the fall term and has been named to the Dean’s List at Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. The Dean’s List recognizes students who have maintained at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average for the semester.

Garden Club members partner with Summit students on projects

Last November, members from the Desert Pointe Garden Club began working on a series of garden projects with students at the Summit School of Ahwatukee. Participating in the garden projects are children from teachers Suchi Roy and Laura Otradovec’s class.

The first project was one in which the children were involved in a “make a wish” wildflower seed over-the-shoulder throw. Today, the gardens are lush with greenery and wildflowers ready to bloom.

The most recent garden club project with the preschoolers was in putting together a hummingbird garden. The children were given a lesson on hummingbirds and how to attract them to a garden. Then several hummingbird plants were planted and a feeder and a nest-building supply cage were set up in the garden.

Desert Pointe Garden Club members will visit with the preschool children periodically to help them care for and appreciate their new hummingbird garden.

Van Vianen, Woodmansee are engaged

Alex and Val Van Vianen of Ahwatukee Foothills have announced the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Kate, to Morgan Robert Woodmansee, son of Mark and Mary Woodmansee, also of Ahwatukee Foothills.

The bride- and bridegroom-to-be are both 2005 graduates of Mountain Pointe High School. The bride-to-be will graduate in May from the University of Arizona with a master of science degree in speech, language and hearing sciences. The bridegroom-to-be graduated in 2009 from the University of Arizona with a bachelor of science degree in biology.

A November 2010 wedding is planned.

Valentine Boutique raises money for DV Grad Night
