Pride hold strength camp

A summer strength and conditioning camp for all Arizona Interscholastic Association-sanctioned sports will be going on four days a week, from June 7 through July 8, in the Mountain Pointe High School weight room, 4201 E. Knox Road.

Jeff Decker, the Advanced Physical Education instructor for all Mountain Pointe varsity athletics, and a strength and conditioning coach for 15 years, will be in charge of the program.

The camp is intended to help athletes in football, baseball, badminton, basketball, cross country, golf, softball, soccer, tennis, swim and dive, track and field, volleyball and wrestling to reach their physical and mental potential.

Camp fees are $125 through April 30 and $150 after May 1.

Back to the gridiron

A strength and conditioning camp for Mountain Pointe football players, from freshmen through seniors, will be from June 7 through July 22 at the school, 4201 E. Knox Road.

The camp fees are $150 through April 30 and $175 beginning May 1.

The camp will be conducted by Mountain Pointe assistant football coach and Advanced Physical Education instructor Jeff Decker and Tim McClellan, a former head strength and condition coach at Arizona State University.

Monday and Wednesday sessions will start at 7 a.m. in Karl Kiefer Stadium for junior varsity and freshmen. Varsity and junior varsity runs will be held in the stadium from 8 to 9 a.m. with varsity lifting from 9 to 10:15 a.m.

The Tuesday and Thursday session also begins at 7 a.m. for freshmen with junior varsity sessions from 8 to 9 a.m. and varsity lifting from 9 to 10 a.m.

Local Football Combine Offered

The “Battle Tested” football combine for players from 8 through 18 years of age will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Desert Vista High School, 16640 S. 32nd Street.

Greg Battle, a former professional football player and assistant coach at Desert Vista, Dan Saleaumua, a 13-year National Football League veteran, Jeff VanRapphorst, a Rose Bowl Most Valuable Player as well as area collegiate coaches and professional athletes will be evaluating player.

The cost is $15 and will benefit the youth Southeast Valley football program.

The program will be similar to NFL combine testing and include individual evaluation on offensive and defense where players can match skills against other players.

Players should bring cleat and flats.
