L.A. Dodgers players to sign autographs at Ahwatukee Park Feb. 28

Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. more than a dozen professional baseball players from the Los Angeles Dodgers organization are scheduled to be on hand at Ahwatukee Park to sign autographs and take photos with local youths.

Dodgers players expected to attend include:

•James Loney

•Matt Kemp

•Clayton Kershaw

•Chad Billingsley

•Blake DeWitt

•Corey Wade

•Brent Leach

•James McDonald

•Kenley Jansen

•Trayvon Johnson

•Xavier Paul

•Dee Gordon

The event is billed as a fundraiser for Ahwatukee Little League, with autographs costing $5, and all proceeds going back to the league.

Local youths are encouraged to bring items with them to be signed, although there will be baseballs for sale on the premises.

Ahwatukee Park is next to the Ahwatukee Board of Management, near the northwest corner of South 48th Street and East Warner Road, behind Blockbuster Video and Nello’s Pizza.

The No. 7 Mountain Pointe girls faced No. 10 Mesa Dobson at home last night, followed by the No. 7 Pride boys team’s matchup with No. 10 Tucson, also at Mountain Pointe.

In Chandler, the No. 11 Desert Vista girls faced Chandler Hamilton on the road as well. Head online to find out who won, and what’s on tap for the winners. Second round of the girls tournament is scheduled for tonight (Feb. 26), while the boys are slated for a Saturday (Feb. 27) tip.

 

ACYFL Longhorns fall football registration

The ACYFL Longhorns organization is registering children for spring football and cheerleading.

The Arizona Competitive Youth Football League (ACYFL) is a grade-based football and cheer program for participants in grades one through eight, with a mission to provide a safe environment where young athletes will learn, develop and excel in the fundamentals of football, cheer, sportsmanship and teamwork.

The Longhorns offer four divisions of play: mighty-mite (first and second grade), junior pee wee (third and fourth grade), pee wee (fifth and sixth grade) and junior (seventh and eighth grade). All coaches are USA Football certified, with home games played at Mountain Pointe High School and away games throughout the Valley.

For participants who sign up in February, mighty-mite football signups are $125 per participant, tackle football signups are $175 each, and cheer is $90 each. Prices will increase in March.

Olympic wrestling camp runs through May at DV

An Olympic freestyle wrestling program is being offered this month through May by the Thunder wrestling camps at Desert Vista High School.

The program is designed to teach boys and girls from kindergarten through high school seniors the fundamentals of Olympic-style wrestling.

Double-elimination tournaments are available to Thunder Wrestling Club members every Saturday through the state championship in May.

Instructors include David Gonzalez, head wrestling coach at Desert Vista; John Matthews, a Desert Vista assistant coach, two-time Olympic wrestler and Pan-Am Games Gold medal winner; Rob Matthews, a member of the 1988 Arizona State University national championship team and wrestling coach at Altadeña Middle School; and Justin Porter, a former All-American Massachusetts high school wrestler.
