Whigham goes international

When Desert Vista senior Carrie Whigham takes her soccer talents on a road trip it means packing a suitcase.

Whigham, who has signed to play soccer at the University of Oklahoma next year, was a member of the U.S. under-18 Women’s National Team that played in the Ten Nations soccer tournament earlier this month in La Manga, Spain.

Whigham, who has been part of the U.S. National program since she was 15, was the defensive captain of the United States team that went 2-1 in the tournament, allowed two goals and registered a 1-0 shutout against Germany.

The team, which played squads up to a year older because of the tournament format, also defeated Sweden, 3-1, then lost to Norway, 1-0.

England, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Italy also sent women’s teams to the tournament.

Whigham, who is expected to contribute to the Sooners women soccer program as a freshman next fall, started in all three games for the United States during the tournament.
