Younger, McCartney announce engagement

Sarah Michelle Younger and Jeffrey Charles McCartney are engaged to be married, and the wedding will take place June 19 at Ashley Manor in Chandler.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Cindy and Wally Younger of Ahwatukee Foothills. She is a 2006 graduate of Xavier College Preparatory.

The bridegroom-to-be is the son of Don and Sherry McCartney of Shreve, Ohio, and Loretta and Dan Hostetler of Wooster, Ohio. He is a 2006 graduate of Triway High School.

Both are attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and will graduate this spring.

 

Ferrin attends NRA summit

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Alyssa Ferrin was one of 45 students from across the nation accepted into the National Rifle Association’s Youth Education Summit (NRA’s YES). The week-long program took place in July in Washington, D.C.

The students toured the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Pentagon, National Archives, monuments and memorials, Arlington Cemetery and Quantico Marine Base. They spent a lot of time at the NRA headquarters. They also gave speeches and participated in debates on current political topics.

Ferrin was one of seven students awarded scholarship money at the end of the week. She received a $1,500 scholarship for her outstanding performance and is eligible to apply for the NRA annual $20,000 Grand Scholarship.

Since her experience with the Youth Education Summit, Ferrin has become a volunteer for the NRA Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program, a gun accident prevention program designed for children in pre-K through third grade. She presents the program to Cub Scout groups.

The NRA encourages citizens nationwide to participate in heightening gun safety awareness within their local communities. Nguyen, Cumpston selected to perform in Friendship Concert

Ahwatukee Foothills residents Dan Nguyen, 6, and Brennan Cumpston, 9, have been selected to perform in the Suzuki Piano Basics Friendship Concert starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at Westwood High School, 945 W. 8th St., Mesa. The concert is being presented by the Arizona Suzuki Association Phoenix Piano Group and will feature 22 students from across the United States. Nguyen and Cumpson are students of local Suzuki teacher Karen Nalder.

This concert is being given in conjunction with a piano workshop being taught by teachers from the internationally-acclaimed Talent Education Research Institute in Matsumoto, Japan, which was established by Shinichi Suzuki, the founder of the famous Suzuki Method. Teachers attending are from across the United States and Canada.

The Suzuki Method approaches learning to play music as one learns language; hear it, say it (play it), then read it. Children as young as 3 listen to high-quality music that they learn to play and later learn to read. By watching other children perform, young children realize that any child can learn to play the piano well. Using the Suzuki Method, parents and teachers create a learning environment where all children can be successful.

This concert is being given as a gift to the community with no cost to attend. Parents are encouraged to bring their piano students and “potential” piano students for an afternoon of fun and inspiration. All teachers and interested community members are welcome.

Thorning becomes U.S. citizen

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Gerald Thorning took part in the Naturalization Ceremony Jan. 16 at the city of Chandler’s 15th Annual Multicultural event. Thorning previously lived in South Africa. He was one of nine others from various countries that became citizens of the United States during the ceremony.
