Registration open for Golf, Swim and Tennis Fall Break Camp
Registration is under way for the Golf, Swim and Tennis Fall Break Camp set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 to 15 at the Ahwatukee Community Swim and Tennis Center, 4700 E. Warner Road. The day camp is for children ages 6 to 14.
Camp activities include instruction in golf and tennis in a non-competitive environment with an emphasis on recreation to allow each child to participate at his or her own level. After the golf and tennis instruction, it is off to the heated pool for a splashing good time.
Campers will need to bring their own lunch; snacks, juice and other soft drinks will be available for purchase. Camp cost is $190, and pre-registration is required. Registration is available in person at the center from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday or by calling (480) 893-3431.
Fundraising van at Grace Inn
The MidFirst Bank fundraising van will be at the Grace Inn, 10831 S. 51st St. (at Elliot Road) from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 3, to assist the Ahwatukee Rotary in collecting coins and canned food to support hunger programs in the community. The bank will match the first $1,000 raised. The hotel will also offer a breakfast special, with $1 from each breakfast purchased going to support the drive.

Free Friday dump days in October
Maricopa County Solid Waste Management is offering the public Five Free Fridays in October (7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30) to dump trash and recyclables at any one of its six transfer stations across the county as part of its “Take It to the Dump” campaign. Locations are Aguila, 48848 N. 531 Ave., Aguila 85320; Cave Creek, 3955 E. Carefree Hwy., Phoenix 85331; Hassayampa, 32450 W. Salome Hwy., Arlington 85322; Morristown, 40135 N. Free spay/neuter and rabies vaccination clinics
Maricopa County Animal Care and Control’s Uno por Uno program is offering three free rabies vaccination clinics and two free spay and neuter clinics in the HALO parking lot at 5231 N. 35th Ave.
Check-in for the spay and neuter clinics begins at 7 a.m. Oct. 4 and 18 and is first come, first serve. Show up early as the mobile unit only takes an average of 25 animals, depending on size. Do not give food or water to pets after 10 p.m. the night before the surgery. No hernias or cryptorchid males, pregnant or in-heat females. Animals must be at least 2 pounds. There is a limit of two pets per household.
The rabies vaccination clinics run from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 7, 15 and 28. Animals must be in good health and at least three months old.
For all clinics, dogs must be on a leash less than 6 feet in length, and cats need to be in carriers.

Aunt Chilada Salsa Cup Challenge Oct. 14

SAMHSA awards grant to Arizona Behavioral Health and the Hope Network
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is awarding grants totaling almost $81.5 million over five years to local organizations throughout the country working to end chronic homelessness in their communities. Arizona Behavioral Health Corporation (ABC) and the Hope Network are among the 43 recipients nationally to receive this award.
Under the grant program, ABC will be awarded up to $400,000 per year for up to five years and will serve approximately 100 individuals each year. This grant program will be administered by SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services.

Church offering rent-a-space parking lot sale

YMCA offers Monster Ball, Family Fun Night
Gather up the whole family and head over to the YMCA for an evening of monstrous fun on Friday, Oct. 23. The Monster Ball – a Halloween dance, trunk or treat and haunted house family fun event all rolled up into one – will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ahwatukee Foothills YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane.
Windy City DJ’s will emcee the event, and guests are invited to come dressed in costume if they wish. The evening includes dance games, prizes, two haunted houses for young and older children and “trunk-or-treating.”
The cost is $5 for the entire family and includes a slice of pizza, drink, popcorn and the haunted houses.

Winery hosting Kokopelli Krush
Kokopelli Winery, located at 35 W. Boston St. in Chandler, will host the 8th annual Kokopelli Krush Oct. 23 to 25. The Krush is a fun grape stomping competition in which teams of two get in barrels and compete to stomp as many grapes as they can and produce as much juice as possible to win prizes.
The event will feature live music from Jazz to Reggae to Blues, as well as great food and award-winning wine all weekend long.
Hours are 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct 23, with Krush heats starting at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Three heats take place on Saturday - 1:30, 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday will have one heat at 1 p.m., and then the finalist from each day will compete for the grand prize. Group participants such as local schools, churches and businesses are invited to compete in the new corporate category.
There will also be sponsors displaying their wares, local arts and crafts exhibitors, a kids inflatable play area, travel companies and more. Along with the grand prize trip for two, awards will be given away each day for best krush style and best costume. Corporate team awards and a children’s division 12 and under are new Krush categories this year. Even the worst krushers receive recognition this year with the Hollow Foot Award for the last place finishers in each heat.

Teddy Bear Holiday Teas to be highlighted by Jeffrey Bear Storybook Contest
The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix Afternoon Tea Mascot, Jeffrey the Bear, takes center stage for the first annual Jeffrey Bear Tea holiday story-telling competition, to be conducted throughout this fall’s Teddy Bear Tea season.
Teddy Bear Tea will served Friday through Sunday Nov. 28 through Dec. 19 in the Lobby Lounge. Adults will enjoy a traditional afternoon tea while children will nibble on sandwiches followed by teddy bear treats. Hot chocolate and marshmallows complete the Tea. Children can also look forward to a visit from Mr. Ted E. Bear and special story time with Jeffrey.

National Adoption Day is Nov. 21
National Adoption Day is held one day a year (Nov. 21) and is a collective national effort to raise awareness of children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families. National Adoption Day has made the dreams of thousands of children come true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions and find permanent, loving homes for children in foster care.
Since 2000, the goal of National Adoption Day has been that every community in the U.S. will have an annual, institutionalized, self-driven celebration of National Adoption Day on or near the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which can include finalizing adoptions of children from foster care and celebrating all adoptions. In total, more than 25,000 children have been adopted from foster care on National Adoption Day.
Last year Phoenix was No. 1 in the nation with over 250 adoptions completed.
This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Durango Juvenile Court, 3131 W. Durango. Children will enjoy hanging out with the Suns Gorilla, face painting, ice cream, and a free family portrait. Volunteers and donations are needed.

Applications now being accepted for 2010 Master Gardener training
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Maricopa County Master Gardener Program holds certification classes throughout the Valley twice yearly. The classes teach future Master Gardener Volunteers the details on how to successfully garden in the Valley.

VNSA wants your books
VNSA (Volunteer Nonprofit Service Association), a local, all-volunteer nonprofit corporation, needs donations of gently used books, paperbacks, videos, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, books on tape or CD and any other book-related items for the 54th Annual VNSA Used Book Sale scheduled for Feb. 13 and 14, 2010. Proceeds from the book sale will benefit Valley nonprofit agencies that serve families and children in need.

2010 Real Gardens for Real People Garden Tour
The Master Gardener volunteers from the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, Maricopa County will host the Ninth Annual Real Gardens for Real People Tour to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 13.
The public is invited to view the home gardens of certified Master Gardeners in the historic vicinity of the Central Corridor in Phoenix.
Guest speakers will be onsite at the various gardens to give talks and answer gardening questions on many different topics, from soil and irrigation basics to attracting wildlife and growing edible treats in your garden.

Support domestic abuse awareness, recovery
Sunsational Cruises and Bravery Project are partnering to offer a journey of recovery. An escape to sea supporting domestic abuse awareness sets sail June 6, 2010, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The 2010 Bravery Project Cruise is a seven-night cruise to the eastern Caribbean with rates beginning at $979 per person for double occupancy. For each confirmed booking made through Polly Waln at Sunsational Cruises, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support Bravery Project.

Classes offered for un- and under-employed
Training to YOU, a computer technology center located at 2200 N. Central Ave., Suite 100, is offering local un- and under-employed persons a unique opportunity to update their Microsoft Office skills. A number of half-day classes are available each week, and empty seats are available on a “pay-what-you-can” basis.
Class size is limited to 12, and each student receives instructor-led classroom training and a manual for ready reference. Fees are normally $120, but un- or under-employed people are only asked to pay what they can afford.

Woodworkers looking for projects
The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.
Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.
The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.
Projects are needed, and organizations such as schools, hospitals, churches or other charities in need of something built or made are asked to contact president Tom Rosenthal at (480) 275-6631.
Older children and larger sibling groups need adoption, too
Christian Family Care Agency hopes to draw attention to two very special groups of kids who need adoptive homes – children over the age of 10 and children from larger sibling groups (three or more children).
Louise Gonzales, of Christian Family Care Agency’s Phoenix office, said while progress is being made in these two areas, the need for loving parents willing to adopt these kids is still tremendous.
Gonzales said parents willing to adopt children from these two areas often will move through the adoption process more quickly. She added that a parent’s age isn’t usually as big an issue when it comes to adopting an older child.

YMCA’s OPAS program
Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.
