Vance crowned Miss Arizona Teen USA

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Tori Vance, 16, was recently crowned Miss Arizona Teen USA 2010. She won more than $90,000 in scholarships and prizes and will go on to compete for the title of Miss Teen USA in August in the Bahamas.

Miss Teen USA is a division of the Miss Universe organization, which is owned by Donald Trump.

Vance is also a model and actress with the Leighton Agency and is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in fashion marketing and management.

She is the daughter of Doug and Terri Vance and the granddaughter of Roger and Judy Wells of Ahwatukee Foothills and Karol Ebert of Apache Junction.

 

Desai, Redshaw among Kyrene’s best spellers

The Kyrene School District Spelling Bee was held Jan. 13 at the Ben Furlong Center in Tempe. Each participating Kyrene school sent the 21 top spellers in fourth to eighth grades to participate.

Nina Desai, an eighth-grader at Kyrene Centennial Middle School, placed fourth; and Caleb Redshaw, a fourth-grader at Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School, came in fifth place.

The top five winners in the District Spelling Bee advance to the Regional Spelling Bee set for 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Tempe Elementary School District Office, 3205 S. Rural Road. Kyrene students will participate with district winners from Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and surrounding private, charter and home school organizations.

The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee will participate in the Arizona Sate Spelling Bee to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place in Washington D.C.

Ahwatukee Rotary Club to participate in international trip to fight polio

The Ahwatukee Foothills Rotary Club will celebrate the 105th anniversary of Rotary on Feb. 23 by partnering with three Arizona Rotary Districts and a district from California to help eradicate polio.

Fifty Rotarians will travel by bus to Hermosillo, Mexico, on Feb. 19 to partner with the Mexican government to go door-to-door to immunize 800 children in one weekend. The global eradication of polio is a main focus for Rotary International, and the Ahwatukee Foothills Rotary Club is part of the expedition.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Grace Inn, 10831 S. 51st St. Everyone with a passion for serving their community and world is invited to attend.

 

Hetrick graduates from DBU

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Sarah Dawn Hetrick graduated from Dallas Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in December 2009. Her honors include being on the President’s List and the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Jennifer and Stuart Hetrick.

 

Girl Scouts visit Phoenix Police Precinct

On Friday, Jan. 8, Girl Scouts from Ahwatukee Troops 774, 1537 and 279 took a field trip to the Central City Precinct to learn about careers in the police department. The Brownie scouts are working on their Careers Try It badge.

Officer Darline Maitland first spoke with the girls about the requirements to become a police officer, highlighting the benefits of education and exercise. She also described the different types of jobs officers do, and the scouts listened to incoming calls over her radio.

Coleman named to Dean’s List at Marquette

Kelly Coleman of Ahwatukee Foothills has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2009 semester at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. Coleman is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences.

 

Sheldon earns Eagle Scout rank

Craig Sheldon, 16, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 474 led by scoutmaster Don Crance.

For his Eagle project, Sheldon constructed four cement benches around an existing fire pit at Desert Cross Lutheran Church in Tempe. He also reworked and constructed erosion control with fabric and river rock to divert rainwater. The project took 254 hours to complete and involved 29 volunteers.

Sheldon is the son of Ralph and Beth Sheldon of Tempe and is a sophomore at Mountain Pointe High School.
