“Love of Story” will be celebrated at the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute’s annual fall concert, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the college’s Performance Hall, 7050 S. 24th St.

SMCC storytelling programs are not exclusively children’s events; they often contain sophisticated themes and content suitable for both adults and young people.

‘A is for Art’ at The CoffeeBuzz

The CoffeeBuzz, 4804 E. Chandler Blvd., is currently hosting an A is for Art show featuring the works of artist Mario Mendia. The artwork is made from “throw away” pieces of paint chips taken from around the A on Tempe Butte above Arizona State University in Tempe. These paint chips are sometimes many dozens of layers thick and create interesting effects when exposed in different ways.

SMCC presents Isola Jones and Henry Rose in concert

South Mountain Community College music faculty artists Isola Jones (mezzo soprano) and Henry Rose (piano) are teaming up for a fall concert of classical piano and voice, with ticket proceeds going to benefit the college scholarship fund. The duo will present a recital featuring the works of Ravel, Godowsky, Chopin and De Falla beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in the SMCC Performance Hall at 7050 S. 24th St.

Funds raised through ticket sales will go toward the STARS scholarship fund for SMCC students in need. The fund, largely supported by campus employees, has raised in excess of $100,000 for area students since its inception.

Rimes, Leno appearing at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino

Monarch butterfly exhibit returns to the DBG

Mariposa Monarca, a monarch butterfly exhibit, returns this fall to the Desert Botanical Garden.

Guests may view these delicate creatures in the Marshall Butterfly Pavilion at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, Sept. 26 through Nov. 15.

When In AZ!

The When In AZ! project is the largest locally-created music compilation the valley has ever seen, featuring more than 55 local musicians paying homage to the great scene happening in Arizona and to give back to the community.

This compilation is a mix of Arizona bands doing Arizona music and is now available on a download card for only $8. Proceeds from the purchase of download cards will benefit charities that support music education: Ear Candy Productions and the Phoenix Conservatory of Music.

Heard Museum courses teach about Southwest history, cultures

The Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., is offering history buffs an opportunity to learn more about Southwest American Indian cultures and art.

A Las Guias Docent Training Class will begin Oct. 6 and meet weekly until early May. The deadline to register is Sept. 29.

The docent program combines extensive learning about the regions people and cultures with camaraderie and public service. At the course’s conclusion, participants become Las Guias guides at the Heard and provide tours to the public.

Top Valley chefs serve up favorite dishes in support of the arts

The 4th Annual Dine Out with the Chefs: A Celebration of the Culinary Arts event will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St.

The event offers guests the opportunity to mingle with more than 20 of the Valley’s top chefs and to sample their culinary creations, a seminar with internationally-known viticulturalist and consultant Jennifer Hashim-Buckey and a book signing by Pamela Swartz. Rakata will provide Latin-inspired music and there will be raffles and tastings of fine wines, beers and spirits.

Pop sensations Jonnie and Brookie giving benefit concert

Radio Disney’s “Next Big Thing” pop sensations Jonnie and Brookie will hold a benefit concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Mountain View Lutheran Church to help raise funds for the Music Ministry. The annual Chili Cook-Off will also be held.

Jonnie and Brookie are local girls who have made it big. Their music has a fun pop feel. Both play electric, acoustic and bass guitars while filling in with piano and drums. They have been performing across the country since they were 3 and 5 years old, and their mission is to be good role models for our youth and to show them that it’s cool to help others, have good character and to make a difference. TASTE Culinary Festival tickets on sale

Tickets are now available for the inaugural TASTE Chandler’s Culinary Festival 2009, taking place from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in Historic Downtown Chandler. The festival, presented by the HDE Agency and E Events & Entertainment, will give participants the opportunity to taste, savor and enjoy the delicacies of Chandler’s finest eating establishments.

Duo to present “Shanks for the Memories”

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Bob Pasch and Lynn “Win” Roberts will present “Shanks for the Memories,” a golf tribute to Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Foothills Golf Club, 2201 E. Clubhouse Drive.

Pasch is known as the most outstanding bing Crosby Tribute Artist in the industry. He has won multiple awards and delighted audiences throughout the United States and Australia with his good, clean humor and remarkable likeness in sound, appearance and mannerisms of the great master, Bing Crosby.

Roberts is recognized as the most outstanding Bob Hope impersonator in the industry. He developed a variety show in 1964 and began to impersonate not only Hope but also Red Skelton, Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante. He also has won numerous awards and has performed throughout the country as well as in commercials, on radio, television and industry programs.

Grand Canyon State Games hosting annual art contest

The Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest promotes creativity through art as an effective method for artists across the nation to express their dreams and ideas for a successful life and a better community.

Draw, paint, decoupage, be innovative artistically as the challenge is on to use creativity and imaginations to put this year’s themes into art. Themes range from topics on Character Education, being Tobacco and Alcohol free, to the importance of taking care of your bodies in a healthy manner and the importance of practicing peace in your everyday life.

The contest is free, and entries will be judged on originality, theme interpretation and use of media. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to the top winners from each grade, kindergarten to 12, and two adult categories (ages 19 to 49, and 50 and up). DBG Music in the Garden fall concert series

VYT auditioning for A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail and 13

Valley Youth Theatre, 525 N. First St., will hold auditions for A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail and 13 starting at 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and 22.

Based on the beloved stories by A.A. Milne, A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail has become a holiday tradition at VYT, now in its 14th season. 13, a new musical with an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, is a hilarious, high energy musical for all ages about discovering that cool is where you find it … and sometimes where you least expect it.

There is no fee to participate in main stage productions, but parents and families are asked to help with set construction, costumes and front of house during rehearsals and the run of the show.

Sonoran Desert Chorale announces upcoming season

Inspired with optimism, the Sonoran Desert Chorale has themed its new season “How Can I Keep From Singing”? and features a year of heart-lifting, infectious songs designed to entertain audiences.

Chrysalis, together with Childsplay will host the exclusive Valley debut of Childsplay’s Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! on Dec. 5 at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Amateur film-makers invited to enter contest

A new collaboration between the Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival and the New Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix has resulted in the creation of the Scholastic Film Contest.

The contest is open to all amateur scholastic film-makers in the United States. Film-makers do not have to be Jewish to enter the contest, but must fall into the following two grade levels for which one winner will be selected for each level – Level 1, high school students grades 9 to 12; and Level 2, undergraduate or graduate students at any college or university.

Submitted films must be no longer than 10 minutes and of obvious Jewish content or reflect issues related to any cultural, political historical, religious, geographical or any other aspects of Jewish life.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 15, 2010.

Indian Market continues to combine innovation with tradition

The 52nd Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, “Where Art Meets Entertainment,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6 and 7 at the Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave.

The world-acclaimed festival draws nearly 20,000 visitors and more than 700 of the nation’s most outstanding and successful American Indian artists.
