‘12-Week Transformation Contest’ starting
K4 Fitness boot camp and group personal training is presenting its “12-Week Transformation Contest” through March 24 at Pecos Park, 17010 S. 48th St.
Start with a private photo taken of you on Day 1, complete with measurements, weight and body fat analysis. After 12 weeks another photo will be taken. Each participant will get to vote on before and after photos to determine who has the greatest transformation. Each participant will put in a $2 contribution to show their dedication, and the person with the greatest transformation wins the pot.
Class times are: 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
Group Personal Training Classes are $10 per class. Discounts are available if you pay five months in advance or have been a consistent client for three months or longer.
Health, wellness class Jan. 9
Every month a health and wellness education class hosts two local experts to explain how various beneficial choices can make a positive difference in lives. This month’s class will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Ironwood Library, 4333 E. Chandler Blvd., and the topic is New Year’s health goals.
Dr. Sam Sterk, director of Peak Performance Plus, will explain how counseling and hypnosis can help people achieve positive goals for 2010. Dr. Betsy Yurgel from Phoenix Holistic will discuss how naturopathic medicine can assist in improving health goals for 2010. A group discussion relating to whole food nutrition will also take place.

Back Handspring Boot Camp

Race benefits Arizona Disabled Sports
Athletes of all ages and ability levels are invited to participate in a race on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Tempe Beach Park, 620 N. Mill Ave., in which all proceeds benefit Arizona Disabled Sports.
A 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 0.5 mile kids fun run at 8:45 a.m. and a 10K race at 9:15 a.m.
Fitness for the New Year

Am I Hungry? mindful eating workshop coming up
The Living Well Retreats will host an eight-week “Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat” mindful eating workshop series starting in January.
Based on the Am I Hungry? mindful eating program developed by Dr. Michelle May, the series is designed to help participants break free from their eat-repent-repeat eating cycles and yo-yo dieting by leaning behaviors that bring enjoyment back to eating as well as healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

‘Living Well with a Disability’ health promotion program

‘Walk in the Wild’ at the zoo
Grab your sneakers and head to the Phoenix Zoo for the Annual Walk in the Wild set for 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

Bike MS: Round Up Ride FY10
The Bike MS: Round Up Ride will be held March 27 and 28 starting at Heritage Park at 600 N. Main St. in Florence. Registration begins at 5:30 a.m., with a 7 a.m. start time.
This ride is the largest and best supported two-day, fully-catered cycling event in Arizona, attracting nearly 1,000 cyclists from across the country.
Proceeds will help end the devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis.

Group offers support for depression, anxiety
Sun Lakes resident Deb Ralston has formed a new Peer Support Group offering support for men and women experiencing symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. The group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays (except first Mondays) in the Phoenix Room at the Cottonwood Clubhouse in Sun Lakes. Meetings are earmarked by confidentiality and respect for the participants’ integrity and privacy.
Ralston has worked as the clinical director of a shelter for abused children and is presently coordinator of volunteers with Neighbors Who Care, a nonprofit agency that assists the home-bound elderly. She offers her guidance to the Monday support group at no cost.
