Tween, teen girls invited to FitChicks Winter Workshop

Over school winter break from Dec. 21 to 30, Joyful Yoga Studio in Chandler is hosting a special workshop series designed to build strength, flexibility and confidence in girls ages 11 through 17. Tween and teen girls will be able to relax, have fun, be physically active and make new friends while learning about fitness and how to radiate beauty from the inside out. Each day will cover different topics including healthy eating, yoga, cardio, strength training and learning how to develop a fitness plan. No prior fitness experience is needed.

Classes will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Dec. 21 through 30. The cost is $36 for the entire series, or enroll with a friend for just $32 for each student. ‘Walk in the Wild’ team recruitment under way

Grab your sneakers and head to the Phoenix Zoo for the Annual Walk in the Wild set for 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

Walkers may choose the one-mile or the 5K run/walk. Each walker receives a commemorative T-shirt, entrance into the Walk in the Wild post-party and admission into the zoo. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Phoenix Zoo. Walk as a team or as an individual.

Joyful Yoga Studio offers free New Year’s Day class

Joyful Yoga Studio, located at 3900 W. Ray Road in Chandler, will celebrate its first year in business by offering a free yoga class at noon on New Year’s Day.

Everyone is invited to start 2010 off refreshed and inspired with an hour-long, all-levels yoga class taught by Julia Pearl, a 14-year health and wellness industry veteran.

Dr. Pearson’s office hosting toy drive

Ahwatukee Foothills orthodontist Dr. Joe Pearson and staff invite the community to participate in their annual Phoenix Children’s Hospital toy drive.

Toys are being collected through Dec. 23 at their office, 4350 E. Ray Road, Building 3, Suite 112. The donated toys will be hand delivered to the hospital to be distributed to boys and girls who won’t be able to be home for the holidays.

Toys needed for PCH holiday toyland

On Dec. 24, volunteers and staff at Phoenix Children’s Hospital will transform the hospital’s conference center into a magical winter toyland for the children spending this holiday season as a patient. Parents of hospitalized patients will have an opportunity to select unwrapped toys from an array of donated items – free of charge. Generous donations from the community make this possible.

Toy donations (non-violent, brand new toys only - no food, candy or stuffed animals, please) are being accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Dec. 23 at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, 1919 E. Thomas Road. Donation drop off will be at the Rosenberg Building main entrance/lobby – Building E.

All Level Yoga classes coming up

All Level Yoga classes will be offered at 9 a.m. Mondays and 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays during January and February at the Ahwatukee Firehouse Community Room, 4110 E. Chandler Blvd. Classes will be taught by 500-hour master level certified and registered yoga instructor Donna DiNunzio. The cost is donation.

Aflac duck quacks for Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

For the ninth consecutive year, Aflac is offering a new plush duck for the holidays. The Aflac Holiday Duck is available at participating Macy’s department stores and online at www.aflacholidayduck.com or www.macys.com.

The duck, which cries its familiar “Aflaaac” when squeezed, is $10 for the 6-inch version and $15 for the 10-inch. The star on its head also lights up.

Proceeds from sales in Phoenix will benefit the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Line Dance, Muscle Mania classes starting in January

Carrie McNeish is offering Line Dance and Muscle Mania classes this spring.

Sun Lakes Parkinson’s Support Group meeting

The Sun Lakes Parkinson’s Support Group will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, in the Mirror Room at the Sun Lakes Country Club, 25425 N. Sun Lakes Blvd., Sun Lakes.

Don and Victoria Fiore, certified Tai Chi and Qigong instructors, will talk about the health benefits derived from the daily practice of these forms of exercise. They help with balance, flexibility, coordination, breathing and circulation. The classes are specifically designed for those with Parkinson’s and arthritis. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes so you can participate in their demonstration session.

‘Living Well with a Disability’ health promotion program

Bike MS: Round Up Ride FY10

The Bike MS: Round Up Ride will be held March 27 and 28, 2010, starting at Heritage Park at 600 N. Main St. in Florence. Registration begins at 5:30 a.m., with a 7 a.m. start time.

This ride is the largest and best supported two-day, fully-catered cycling event in Arizona, attracting nearly 1,000 cyclists from across the country.

Proceeds will help end the devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis.

La Leche League meets 1st Thursdays

Join like mothers from around the Valley at La Leche League, an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. All women, especially pregnant and nursing mothers, are welcome to attend the meetings from 11 a.m. to noon on the first Thursday of each month (Dec. 3) at The Center for True Harmony Wellness and Medicine, 2152 S. Group offers support for depression, anxiety

Sun Lakes resident Deb Ralston has formed a new Peer Support Group offering support for men and women experiencing symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. The group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays (except first Mondays) in the Phoenix Room at the Cottonwood Clubhouse in Sun Lakes. Meetings are earmarked by confidentiality and respect for the participants’ integrity and privacy.

Ralston has worked as the clinical director of a shelter for abused children and is presently coordinator of volunteers with Neighbors Who Care, a nonprofit agency that assists the home-bound elderly. She offers her guidance to the Monday support group at no cost.
