SNAP presenting Broadway Cafe
TRANSITIONS for the Developmentally Disabled and its non-profit wing “Sharing Smiles” works with young men and women who have various disabilities. The staff and special needs participants have been busy for months in preparation for the first SNAP (Special Needs Actors Production) of Broadway Cafe, which will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at Mountain Park Community Church, 2408 E. Pecos Road.
Tickets are $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under. All proceeds will help raise funds for the special needs actors to go on a trip to Disneyland.

’40s Big Band Dance, USO Show
The annual Night of the 40’s Big Band Dance and USO Show will take place Saturday, March 20, in an airplane hangar at Falcon Field in Mesa. Doors open at 4:30, with entertainment at 5:30 p.m. followed by a costume contest. Patsy’s Bridal Shower adds performances
Due to popular demand, the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre has scheduled additional performances of Patsy’s Bridal Shower, an interactive comedy when cash meets trash. Staged in the theater’s intimate Marquee Room at 5247 E. Brown Road in Mesa, matinees have been added on Saturdays March 27 and April 10 at 11:45 a.m. for the buffet and show at 1:15 p.m. In response to overwhelming interest on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, a twilight performance bas been added with the buffet meal at 5:30 p.m. and show at 7 p.m.

Local entertainment collaborations create March Madness at MADCAP Theaters
Throughout March, MADCAP is hosting a tribute to the “The Rarest Greatness of Chuck Jones” in conjunction with the Tempe Center for the Arts exhibit honoring the late cartoonist, as well as showing the Oscar-nominated film Jesus Christ Superstar to celebrate the opening of the Broadway show at ASU Gammage in April.
MADCAP Theaters will present a heavenly event with a screening of Jesus Christ Superstar at 7 p.m. March 25, with giveaways to the upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar at ASU Gammage. Arizona Science Center entrance gets a facelift
After three years of planning and thanks to a voter-approved, 2006 city of Phoenix bond award for much needed facility and safety improvements, construction has begun on a new entrance and lobby at the Arizona Science Center.
Soon the Science Center will offer a larger, air-conditioned environment for queuing, improved accessibility for patrons who have a disability and school groups, as well as making it easier to enter the building and begin your scientific explorations.
The demolition phase of construction will last three months and the entire project is expected be completed by the end of the 2010 calendar year.
During the first phase of construction, temporary entrances and exits for both general public and school group access will be highlighted by signage throughout and surrounding the Center. Guests are encouraged to continue parking in the Heritage & Science Park garage located on the corner of Monroe and Fifth streets.
Spring Paintout at DBG
The Desert Botanical Garden and Scottsdale Artists League are co-sponsoring their 15th annual Spring Paintout through April 4 at the Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.
More than 40 of the league’s best landscape artists will set up their easels throughout the Garden and paint from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays in March. The public is encouraged to interact with them and see art and nature in new ways.
A show and sale will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 to 4, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Desert Botanical Garden and the Scottsdale Artists League’s Scholarship Fund.

The Phoenix Symphony partners with St. Mary’s Food Bank
This March, The Phoenix Symphony will once again partner with St. Mary’s Food Bank as participants in Orchestras Feeding America.
This nationwide project started last year and was inspired by the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained string player who was living on the streets of Los Angeles as a result of a mental illness. Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez noticed Nathaniel and was drawn to his talent, intelligence and passion for Beethoven. The fascinating story led to the film The Soloist, a film about Ayers, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr.
This film and the Orchestras Feeding America project are testaments to the power of music. Last year’s Orchestras Feeding America project involved 250 orchestras collecting over 200,000 pounds of food.
Phoenix Symphony patrons may donate items at Symphony Hall during the “Symphonic Star Wars” and “Star Wars Mania” concerts beginning one hour prior to the start of each concert. Concerts on March 26 and 27 begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinee on March 27 begins at 2 p.m. The Family Series concert on March 27 starts at 2:30 pm.
The most needed items are dry soup, rice, powdered or canned milk, macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter, beans, canned fruit and vegetables, tuna, canned meats, soup, pasta and fruit juices/sip-sized juices. For every 10 accepted items donated, Phoenix Symphony patrons will receive a voucher good for two tickets for an upcoming 2009-10 Symphony concert (some exclusions apply.)

Teen career workshop focuses on industrial design
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is teaming up with talented Valley professionals to provide a dynamic workshop for teens interested in careers that focus on art, design or architecture. The workshop will help high school students who are at the college application stage explore one of the many creative careers offered today.
The workshop will run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Arizona State University’s Skysong complex, 1475 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 150, Scottsdale.
To dovetail with the museum’s current spring design exhibition titled Rewind Remix Replay: Design, Music & Everyday Experience, this year’s event will focus specifically on the field of industrial design.

Phoenix Symphony searching for vocalists
Vocalists across Arizona are invited to audition for The Phoenix Symphony’s 2010/11 Season from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Symphony Hall, 75 N. Second St.

Contestants sought for Mrs. Arizona America Pageant
The Mrs. Arizona America Pageant is looking for contestants from all areas within the state to compete for the title of Mrs. Arizona America. Contestants represent a variety of backgrounds, lifestyles and personal interests and range from ages 21 to 72.
The pageant will take place May 22 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and contestants will compete in three categories: personal interview, evening gown and swimsuit.
Mrs. Arizona will go on to participate in the National Mrs. America Pageant in Tucson in September.

Candidate search is on for Miss Asia Arizona 2010
Candidates are being sought for the seventh annual Miss Asia Arizona Pageant, which will take place June 26 in metro Phoenix. The pageant is produced entirely by volunteers.
The goal of the pageant is to showcase young Asian/Pacific Islander women in a colorful production that will represent their culture, beauty, intelligence and talent.

Pueblo Grande earns rare distinction for the 2nd time
Phoenix’s Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park has, for the second time, earned a rare distinction from the American Association of Museums.
The honor from the association recognizes Pueblo Grande Museum’s success in achieving its mission and goals as well as using best practices and meeting or exceeding museum standards. The museum first earned accreditation in 1999.
Pueblo Grande Museum is located at 4619 E. Washington St., the site of a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village.

‘Rock the Zoo’ coming up

This annual adults-only fundraiser promises plenty of music and merriment while raising money for the Zoo. Phoenix Children’s Chorus 25th Anniversary Inaugural Gala
In anticipation of its historic cultural exchange tour to China including the Shanghai’s Children’s Palace, the Phoenix Children’s Chorus will host its inaugural Gala with a Chinese themed concert, dinner and entertainment.
The 25th Anniversary Inaugural Gala will take place April 24 at Memorial Hall in Steele Indian School Park beginning with outdoor hosted cocktails, Asian themed appetizers, martial artists and lion dancers from White Crane Kung Fu at 6 p.m. Dinner and entertainment will begin at 7 p.m., with all 250 members of the Phoenix Children’s Chorus performing.

Mid-season auditions open for the Phoenix Boys Choir
Due to ongoing demand, the Phoenix Boys Choir is open for auditions mid-season for the first time in its history. Auditions are being scheduled for boys from seven to 14 years old for three levels of the Boys Choir – the Training (located in Tempe, Peoria, Scottsdale and Phoenix), Cadet and Town choirs. Boys will be a part of one of America’s largest and most prestigious choirs and will join 60 years of excellence, earn a sophisticated musical education, learn multi-cultural music and make lifetime friendships.

During the audition, parents and potential members will have the opportunity to observe a typical rehearsal and talk with current parents and choir alumni. Eligible boys should possess an unchanged, clear and pleasant singing voice and a good ear for music. Previous choir experience is not required and there is no need to prepare audition material. Families will be informed immediately after the audition if the boy is accepted and at which choir level he will begin. Boys selected to join the choirs will be invited to become active members of the choir directly following their acceptance. Scholarships and financial aid for tuition and other costs are available.

The annual Jazz in the Garden Concert Series are under way and run Friday evenings through June 25 at the Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway.

Auditions set for Phoenix Children’s Chorus
Phoenix Children’s Chorus will host auditions for the 2010 season on Saturday, May 1, and Monday, May 3, for boys and girls currently in first through eleventh grades. No prior choral training is required – applicants need only possess a clear and pleasant singing voice and the desire to learn. There is no fee to audition, and the audition location is at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. Third St.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the choir has over 225 children in two training choirs and two touring choirs. This award-winning chorus has performed throughout Europe and Russia and has taken top honors at the World Choral Olympics. The two touring choirs will travel to China for a three-city tour in June.
