Olympic wrestling camp runs through May at DV

An Olympic freestyle wrestling program is being offered this month through May by the Thunder wrestling camps at Desert Vista High School.

The program is designed to teach boys and girls from kindergarten through high school seniors the fundamentals of Olympic-style wrestling.

Double-elimination tournaments are available to Thunder Wrestling Club members every Saturday through the state championship in May.

Instructors include David Gonzalez, head wrestling coach at Desert Vista; John Matthews, a Desert Vista assistant coach, two-time Olympic wrestler and Pan-Am Games Gold medal winner; Rob Matthews, a member of the 1988 Arizona State University national championship team and wrestling coach at Altadeña Middle School; and Justin Porter, a former All-American Massachusetts high school wrestler.

Information is available through Gonzalez, dgonzalez.dvh@tuhsd.k12.az.us, Dick Mathers, rem1969@aolcom or Rob Mathers, rmathers12@cox.net.
