Kyrene School District open to take tax credit donations Dec. 31
For parents and community members who want to make a last-minute tax credit donation, Kyrene Elementary School District, located at 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe, will open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 31 to take donations. Individuals and couples filing jointly may take advantage of this tax credit. A maximum of $200 can be deducted per individual tax return, or couples filing a joint return may deduct a maximum of $400. Kyrene’s Athletic Department will also have Jamba Juice available for purchase to raise funds for athletic scholarships.
The Arizona Tax Credit Program allows Arizona taxpayers to donate to a school of their choice in support of extracurricular programs and get their entire donation back in the form of a tax credit. Contributions must be postmarked by Dec. 31 of the year to which you want to apply your tax credit.
School tax credit donations help pay extracurricular activity fees. Funds can apply to things like sports, arts and music programs, and most after-school student clubs.

Kyrene offers after-school sports enrichment classes
The following after-school sports enrichment classes are scheduled to begin when the Kyrene School District returns from winter break: Golf, Tumble Town, After Cool Fitness, Kidz for Life: Cool to be Healthy, Full Court Tennis, Fast Trac Tennis, Athletes in Training, Survivorcise, Hip Hop Dance and Exercise, Pos Soccer Club and Fencing.
Parents may visit www.kyrene.org/eservices to browse the offerings in their neighborhood. Although classes are held on Kyrene School District campuses, registration is available to students Valleywide. Online registration for these classes begins at noon on Jan. 1.
Kyrene Open Enrollment online applications available
Online Open Enrollment applications for the Kyrene Elementary School District are available at www.kyrene.org. Current open enrollment students do not need to re-apply. The application process is designed for students who are new to Kyrene or for those who wish to attend another Kyrene school outside of their home-school boundaries.
Walk-in applications will be available at Kyrene schools and the district office at 8700 S. Kyrene Road in Tempe on Monday, Jan. 4.
Applications will be processed beginning Jan. 4 on a first-come, first-served basis.

60-day review of TransMath runs until Feb. 22
The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review for TransMath, a resource to support the mathematics curriculum in middle school for students with identified disabilities placed in resource pull-out classes. Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review resources and provide feedback.
All feedback will be reviewed by the Exceptional Student Services Department and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process.
The materials consist of three levels: Level 1, Developing Number Sense; Level 2, Making Sense of Rational Numbers; and Level 3, Understanding Algebraic Expressions. Each title contains a teacher guide, student text, interactive text (workbook) and student assessments. Teachers also have access to the mbook, an online teacher guide.

Seton Catholic wins spirit contest
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School has, for the second year in a row, won the 2009 High School Spirit Contest presented by AZCentral.com, JAMZ 101.5, Papa John’s Pizza, Channel 12 News and the AIA.
The Seton Catholic community was victorious in this competition through their “clicking” efforts as contest winners had to visit the Seton Catholic Preparatory High School page on AZCentral.com’s Web site. Seton Catholic “clicked” the most on their site!
For their efforts, students will receive an all-school party on Monday, Jan. 4, with pizza and drinks provided by Papa John’s. In addition to the party, the Seton Catholic Prep Athletics Department will receive $2,000 for athletic programs.
O’Brien extends contract at Summit School
Summit School of Ahwatukee has announced that Pat O’Brien has signed a five-year contract extension to continue on as Summit School of Ahwatukee’s Head of School.
O’Brien, a Chandler resident, holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education and is currently completing a Doctorate of Education at the University of Bath, U.K., focusing on international education. He has been an elementary principal for the past 30 years and has a strong background in the areas of instruction, staff development, special education, parent involvement, site-based management, total quality management, cooperative learning, international education and school-business partnerships.
Kindergarten Education Seminar at God’s Garden Preschool
God’s Garden Child Development Preschool, located at 1401 E. Liberty Lane, will host a Kindergarten Readiness Seminar from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11. Become a certified personal trainer in a year
Students seeking to become a certified strength and conditioning personal trainer can achieve that goal before the end of 2010 through a new program offered at the South Mountain Community College Ahwatukee Foothills Center. Students may complete required coursework by taking five classes in each of the spring and fall 2010 semesters. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students will earn their certificate in December 2010.
The first set of classes begins Jan. 16 and are offered mornings, Tuesdays through Saturdays, through May 14 at the SMCC Ahwatukee Foothills Center, 10429 S. 51st St., Suite 101.
Courses are $71 per credit hour for Maricopa County residents, plus a $15 registration fee paid once per semester. Total tuition cost for all courses required for the certificate is $2,231. Students may enroll online at http://my.maricopa.edu.

MPHS Baseball Boosters hosting golf classic
The Mountain Pointe Baseball Boosters’ Fifth Annual Pride Baseball Golf Classic will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at Club West Golf Club, 16400 S. 14th Ave. The classic features a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start, dinner and a silent auction.
Registration is due by Jan. 1. Sign-up fees are $500 for a foursome or $130 for individual golfers, and all MPHS Baseball Booster sponsorship contributions are tax deductible. Proceeds will help defray the cost of field preparation, equipment and other expenses that the district budget does not cover.

DV Baseball annual golf tournament
The Desert Vista Baseball team will host its Third Annual Golf Tournament with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Club West Golf Club,16400 S. 14th Ave. The team is seeking golfers, sponsorships and donations of any kind. Kyrene de la Paloma Elementary School’s PTA is holding its second Family Fitness 5K and 1 Mile Dove Dash on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the school, 5000 W. Whitten Drive, Chandler. Registration starts at 7 a.m., the 5K at 8 a.m. and the 1 Mile Run/Walk at 9:15 a.m. An awards ceremony follows at 10 a.m.

Seton receives major grant from GRIC
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School has been awarded a $250,000 grant by the Gila River Indian Community that will be used to help fund completion of the new classroom building scheduled to begin construction in early 2010.
On an annual basis, through the State Shared Revenue Program, the Gila River Indian Community awards 12 percent of its gaming revenues directly to cities, towns and counties for services that benefit the general public.

Popular Valley authors to teach creative writing at SMCC
This spring, South Mountain Community College students can learn creative writing skills from a pair of popular Valley authors.
Toni Eubanks, author of Passage to Womanhood: Journey Home, will teach Writing Children’s Literature (CRW120), a five-session online class beginning Jan. 16.
Stella Pope Duarte, award-winning author of such books as If I Die In Juárez, Let Their Spirits Dance, and Fragile Night, will teach Introduction to Writing Fiction (CRW170), a five-session online class beginning Jan. 23.
Each three-credit class will meet online one Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Class dates are staggered, so that students may enroll in both. High School Foundation selling Suns tickets
The Tempe Union High School Education Foundation benefits many students throughout its seven schools in the form of scholarships, teacher enrichment and providing learning opportunities that would not normally occur.
The Foundation is currently selling Phoenix Suns tickets for the Philadelphia game on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., giving community members an opportunity to enjoy the game and at the same time make some money for our kids.
Tickets are $25 each, and the Foundation makes $10 for each ticket sold.
For each ticket purchased, the person will receive a free raffle ticket for the chance to win an autographed picture of Leandro Barbosa and a limited edition money ball from the 2009 All-star game, as well as a gift from the Phoenix Suns at the game. Enjoy an evening of theater at DV
The Desert Vista Theater Troupe will present the following performances in the school’s Black Box Theatre at 16440 S. 32nd St.: One Acts Jan. 20 to 22 and Children’s Hour March 10 to 12. My Fair Lady will run April 29 to May 1 in the Dr. Joe McDonald Auditorium.

SMCC offers GED high school equivalency testing
South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th St., is offering GED testing for individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 must bring a notarized letter of consent from a parent or guardian, along with an official letter of withdrawal from their last school attended. The GED testing fee is $75, with a $15 re-test fee for each subject area. Testing is by appointment only, and pre-registration is required prior to testing. Pre-registration takes place on Monday afternoons between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Testing takes place on Wednesdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tests are available in English, Spanish and large-print. Special accommodations are available for examinees with documented disabilities.

‘African Storytelling Tradition’ offered at SMCC
The award-winning South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute will offer a brand new storytelling class this spring, focusing on traditional African folklore.
The class, entitled “The African Storytelling Tradition” (STO283), will focus on the history and practice of storytelling in Africa. Class instructor is Marilyn Omifunke Torres, an SMCC adjunct faculty member. Torres has been an ordained West African traditional storyteller for more than 30 years and has received two chieftaincies.
The class will run for 16 weeks on Thursday evenings, from 6 to 9:05 p.m., beginning Jan. 25 in Room PAC-739 on the SMCC Main Campus, 7050 S. 24th St. Tuition for the three-credit course is $213, plus a $15 registration fee.

60-day review of Kyrene health materials runs until March 26
The Kyrene Governing Board has voted to initiate a 60-day review of lessons and resources to support Strand 8 (Growth & Development) and Strand 9 (HIV/AIDS & STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) of the Kyrene Expanded Health Curriculum.
Parents, teachers and community members are encouraged to review the lessons and resources in addition to the “Guidelines for Presenters” document and provide feedback. All feedback will be reviewed by the Health Steering Committee and shared with the Kyrene Governing Board prior to a final decision in the adoption process.
The materials will be available for public review through March 26 at the Kyrene District Office, 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe. Office hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
CGCC begins campaign to construct outdoor green classroom
Imagine an outdoor classroom that uses the sun and wind to save and generate energy – a “living” classroom designed to teach students about sustainability and environmental technology through hands-on learning and interaction.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College students and faculty are looking forward to this vision becoming a reality as the college implements a fundraising campaign to secure materials, labor donations and financial support from local businesses and the community in order to construct an Environmental Technology Center on the college’s Pecos campus.
CGCC’s first partner with the project, Jan Lorant, principal of Gabor Lorant Architects Inc., has volunteered many hours to date, consulting, site planning and designing the Environmental Technology Center. The 1,200-square-foot open classroom will have solar panels, amphitheater-style seating and energy monitoring devices, surrounded by demonstration areas, gardens, wind turbines and environmental education information kiosks.

SMCC presents ‘Black Women Walking’
In celebration of Black History Month, South Mountain Community College, the SMCC Black Student Union and Seek First Entertainment will present Black Women Walking, a one-act play spotlighting the achievements of 11 notable African-American women, Feb. 11 to 13.
A school-day performance intended for elementary-age students begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 and evening performances will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 and 13 in the SMCC Performance Hall at 7050 S. 24th St., just north of Baseline Road.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $5 for seniors age 55 and older.
