Alan Schuler, a 2000 Mountain Pointe High School graduate, was injured Tuesday morning in a Tempe condominium fire. He and his girlfriend lost everything in the fire and are in need of help to get their lives back in order.

Wine-, beer-tasting event to benefit female war veterans
The East Valley Women’s League (EVWL) will host its annual “Corks for a Cause” wine- and beer-tasting event at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Inspirador at 63 E. Boston St. in Historic Downtown Chandler.
The tasting will consist of multiple wines and beers. The evening will also include silent and live auctions.
Proceeds will benefit Women Veteran’s Project, EVWL scholarship programs, Children’s Cancer Network and Cinderella Affair.
EV Tour launches 1st amateur golf tournament season
East Valley Tour, a start-up golf tournament league, will open its membership to all amateur golfers every other Sunday beginning Feb. 28. The series of tournaments will be at 15 premiere championship courses throughout the East Valley.
Handicaps will be used to determine final scores in each division, making it competitive for golfers of all levels. Post-game events are open to all participants, and special prizes will be drawn from the pool of non-placers.

AARP Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance and tax preparation for low to moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older. This service is available to Ahwatukee Foothills residents from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays through April 14 in the Fire Station Community Conference Room at 4110 E. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and offer help with personal income tax returns. Completed returns are filed electronically to expedite any refunds. E-filing is also more efficient for the taxpayer, and refunds are received much sooner.

Planning is under way for the 34th Annual Kiwanis Ahwatukee Easter Parade and Spring Fling scheduled for Saturday, April 3. Entries are needed for businesses, youth and church groups, families and individuals for the Easter Parade.
Sponsored again by the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee and beginning at 10 a.m., the parade forms at 48th Street and Warner Road and progresses north about one mile along 48th Street to Cheyenne Drive. Y offers spring break camp, essay contest
The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane, is offering Y-Teen spring break camp and an essay contest to promote keeping kids off drugs.
The Y-Teen spring break camp will run March 15 to 19 for students in fifth to ninth grades. Field trips include Skateland, Fiddlesticks, hiking and more. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and students may attend part time or full time.
An essay contest is under way for students in sixth to eighth grades who are drug free. Essays should be 150 to 250 words describing why they choose to be drug free. Kiwanis Club hosting children’s book drive
The sixth annual Ahwatukee Kiwanis Club Children’s Book Drive starts Feb. 15 and ends March 15. The club is collecting slightly used or new children’s books suitable for preschool through junior high students. The books will be donated to St. Vincent De Paul, Guadalupe Head Start programs and St. Peter Indian Mission School, located on the Gila River Indian Reservation.

Parks and Rec offering 4-week class session in March
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation has opened registration for a special four-week special interest class session that will run in March.
The four-week session may be supplemented with a late spring session running in April and May when operating hours are finalized following City Council adoption of the budget for the coming year. The new center operating hours are determined in early March, and the April/May session classes will be available and registration will begin at 6 p.m. March 11.

Silent Sundays return to South Mountain Park
Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will get to call the roads of South Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department continues its popular Silent Sunday at South Mountain on the fourth Sunday monthly. Starting at 5 a.m. the park’s roadways past the Central Avenue gate, 10919 S. Central Ave., will be reserved for non-motorized use.
Silent Sunday dates for 2010 are Feb. 28, March 28, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28 and Dec. 26.

Build-A-Bear Workshop has taken a leading role in recognizing efforts of young people to help those in need through its Huggable Heroes program. AAA begins search for Crossing Guard of the Year
AAA Arizona is accepting nominations for its third annual Crossing Guard of the Year Award.
School administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students and community members are invited to describe why they believe their candidate deserves the Crossing Guard of the Year designation. Self-nominations will also be accepted. AAA Arizona staff will evaluate nominations to select finalists for the award based on dedication, friendliness, professionalism and safety.
Once finalists are selected, their performance and duties will be evaluated by AAA Arizona traffic safety staff. Two finalists, one from Maricopa County and Pima County, who demonstrate the best example of the procedures and responsibilities outlined in AAA’s Handbook for Adult Crossing Guards, will be awarded the honor. The winners will be announced on April 30, Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Help turn an ordinary teenager into a princess
As the economy continues to grow tighter, extras like a beautiful dress for the prom may not be a reality for some girls this year. A fairy godmother-like program is waiting in the wings to help make sure these girls have a fairytale evening.
“The Cinderella Affair,” now in its ninth year, offers high school juniors and seniors a chance to choose a dress for free to wear on their special night. The event is an all-volunteer project put on by the East Valley Women’s League (EVWL) in collaboration with the Tempe Community Council (TCC).
The EVWL and the TCC will hold their annual dress drive from Feb. 8 to 21 to collect gently-worn dresses for the event. Drop box locations will be placed at Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe high schools, Centennial Middle School, the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, Kimberly Lewis School of Dance, Derma Health Institute and East Valley Bible Church (for addresses, visit the Web site below).
The dress selection event will be held March 26 and 27 at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center in Tempe. On Friday, the program will be open to all girls attending school in the Tempe Unified High School District. On Saturday, it will be open to schools Valleywide. Adventure Play Group getting started

Training to YOU, a computer technology center located at 2200 N. Central Ave., Suite 100, is offering local un- and under-employed persons a unique opportunity to update their Microsoft Office skills. Woodworkers looking for projects
The Ahwatukee Woodworkers Club gets together on Thursdays to work on charity projects and is currently looking for more projects to take on.
Past projects have included making plaques for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, building tables and chairs for preschools and even making model MRI machines for doctors to explain the procedure to children to ease their fears. A model doll house kit was donated to the group, so members built it and held a raffle to raise money to support the club. In another project, models of homes in Tempe were built for the Tempe Historical Society that were raffled in a fundraiser for the society. The group is currently busy making cubbies for a local preschool.
The club is located near the Ahwatukee Recreation Center and is part of the Ahwatukee Retirement Community.

Older children and larger sibling groups need adoption, too
Christian Family Care Agency hopes to draw attention to two very special groups of kids who need adoptive homes – children over the age of 10 and children from larger sibling groups (three or more children).
Louise Gonzales, of Christian Family Care Agency’s Phoenix office, said while progress is being made in these two areas, the need for loving parents willing to adopt these kids is still tremendous.
Gonzales said parents willing to adopt children from these two areas often will move through the adoption process more quickly. She added that a parent’s age isn’t usually as big an issue when it comes to adopting an older child.

YMCA’s OPAS program
Y OPAS (Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors) is a volunteer program of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA providing support services for seniors, 62 years and older, who live in Ahwatukee Foothills. Transportation, shopping and errands, friendly visiting, caregiver relief, business help and household assistance are some of the services provided by Y OPAS volunteers.
